             abstract = "This paper aims to identify, map and characterize the use and land 
                         cover in the region of Irec{\^e}-BA, analyzing its relationship 
                         with the process of desertification through remote sensing 
                         techniques and Geographic Information System (GIS). Land use is 
                         one of the vital indicators in the identification of 
                         desertification, considering that expresses the different ways of 
                         appropriation of space by society. For the mapping of the 
                         different forms of {"}use and coverage, we adopted a 
                         classification methodology respectively officer, the Technical 
                         Manual for Land Use and Technical Manual of Vegetation Brazilian 
                         IBGE, both adapted to the reality of the region. Scenes were 
                         processed from two orbital sensors, the MODIS and Landsat TM 5, 
                         which resulted in several output products. After the development 
                         of database in GIS environment and further analysis, began 
                         identifying the 11 mapped classes. Some classes were clearly 
                         identified, due to the spatial resolution of Landsat is the case 
                         of {"}Irrigated Agriculture{"}. While others appear for the first 
                         time this type mapping for the study area, as the {"}Vegetation in 
                         Fluvial Lacustrine Influence.{"} The location of areas prone to 
                         desertification on the plateau of Irec{\^e} is an indication that 
                         the main cause of land degradation in the region is due mainly to 
                         the indiscriminate use of agricultural management.",
