                         velocidade em 200 hPa (\χ-transiente), o desvio da 
                         m{\'e}dia anual do desvio da m{\'e}dia zonal, {\'e} o 
                         par{\^a}metro chave usado para obter os modos 
                         mon{\c{c}}{\^o}nicos. A an{\'a}lise de Fun{\c{c}}{\~o}es 
                         Ortogonais Emp{\'{\i}}ricas (EOF) do \χ- transiente 
                         fornece dois modos separados. O primeiro modo descreve a 
                         variabilidade multi-decenal dos sistemas mon{\c{c}}{\^o}nicos da 
                         Am{\'e}rica do Sul e do Pac{\'{\i}}fico oeste. Esse modo, 
                         chamado mon{\c{c}}{\^o}nico multi-decenal (MMD), ocorre por todo 
                         o ano e cont{\'e}m a variabilidade multi-decenal relacionada 
                         {\`a} din{\^a}mica da Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Decenal do 
                         Pac{\'{\i}}fico (ODP). O segundo modo descreve as 
                         varia{\c{c}}{\~o}es interanuais opostas entre a {\'A}sia, 
                         {\'A}frica e oceano {\'{\I}}ndico e a regi{\~a}o do oeste dos 
                         Estados Unidos, M{\'e}xico e Pac{\'{\i}}fico leste. Esse modo, 
                         chamado modo interanual (MIA) apresenta algumas similaridades com 
                         o modo tropical interanual El Niņo Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Sul. 
                         Alguns aspectos desses modos, incluindo sua circula{\c{c}}{\~a}o 
                         e caracter{\'{\i}}sticas termodin{\^a}micas s{\~a}o discutidas 
                         aqui. Finalmente, {\'{\i}}ndices baseados nos padr{\~o}es das 
                         configura{\c{c}}{\~o}es espaciais desses modos s{\~a}o 
                         constru{\'{\i}}dos. A efici{\^e}ncia desses {\'{\i}}ndices 
                         para fins de monitoramento {\'e} analisada. Logo, trata-se de um 
                         novo aspecto n{\~a}o proposto em trabalhos anteriores. ABSTRACT: 
                         Tropical circulation variability, with emphasis on the monsoon 
                         systems is examined using several variables for the 1948-1999 
                         period. The monsoon component in the 200 hPa velocity potential 
                         (transient-\χ), the deviation from the annual mean of the 
                         zonal deviation field, is the key parameter used here to obtain 
                         the monsoon modes. The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) 
                         analysis of the transient-\χ yields two separate modes. The 
                         first mode describes the multi-decadal variability of the monsoon 
                         systems in South America and in the western Pacific. This mode, 
                         called the multi-decadal monsoon (MDM) mode, occurs throughout the 
                         year and contains the multi-decadal variability linked to the PDO 
                         dynamics. The second mode describes the opposite interannual 
                         variations of the Asian, African and Indian Ocean region and 
                         western United States, Mexico and eastern Pacific Ocean. This 
                         mode, called here the interannual mode (IAM) bears some 
                         similarities with the tropical interannual El Niņo-Southern 
                         Oscillation mode. Some aspects of these modes, including their 
                         circulation and thermodynamic characteristics are discussed here. 
                         Finally, indices based on the loading patterns of these modes are 
                         constructed. The potential of these indices for monitoring tasks 
                         are analyzed. This is a new aspect not proposed in previous 
                         work.",
