ResumoThe Ti6Al4V is a titanium alloy that has many applications in aerospace industry due to its good mechanical and corrosion properties. But its poor tribological characteristics can restrict the use of this material. To modify this and other surface properties, experiments of nitrogen PBII were performed. Here, one system of auxiliary heating was used to reach the required high temperatures, between 680 and 760 ¨¬C, during the treatments. The samples were treated using nitrogen PBII at 5 keV, with 40 ¥ìs pulse length, and 400 Hz repetition rate during one, two and four hours. The high temperature employed, improves the nitrogen diffusion into the titanium alloy surface. As a consequence the modified thickness can increase substantially. After nitrogen PBII experiments, the Ti6Al4V alloy surface properties were evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and pin-on-disc tests. The morphology of the surface after corrosion tests was obtained by SEM. For characterization of the Ti6Al4V X-ray diffraction was performed while Auger spectroscopy is underway. After PBII treatments, it was verified that the Ti6Al4V presents a new behaviour, for instance, it showed a better performance in the salt corrosion tests. This more noble behavior is due the reduction of the values of passive current densities, about one order of magnitude. Besides this, the tribological properties improved too, as was observed on pin-ondisc tests. The friction coefficient decreased in the initial stages of the wear tests. To evaluate the mechanical properties as hardness and Young modulus, nanoindentation tests will be made on samples before and after nitrogen PBII with auxiliary heating.
