ResumoA continuous stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs)for burst sources is produced if the mean time interval between the occurrence of bursts is smaller than the average time duration of a single burst at the emission, i.e., the so-called duty cycle must be greater than one. To evaluate the background of GWs produced by an ensemble of sources, during their formation, for example, one needs to know the average energy flux emitted during the formation of a single object and the formation rate of such objects as well. In many cases the energy flux emitted during an event of production of GWs is not known in detail; only characteristic values for the dimensionless amplitude and frequencies are known. Here we present a shortcut to calculate stochastic backgrounds of GWs produced from cosmological sources. For this approach it is not necessary to know in detail the energy flux emitted at each frequency. Knowing the characteristic values for the "lumped" dimensionless amplitude and frequency we show that it is possible to calculate the stochastic background of GWs produced by an ensemble of sources.

ResumoIn the study of gravitational waves (GWs), the stochastic background generated by compact binary systems are among the most important kinds of signals. The reason for such an importance has to do with their probable detection by the interferometric detectors [such as the Advanced LIGO (ALIGO) and Einstein Telescope (ET)] in the near future. In this paper we are concerned with, in particular, the stochastic background of GWs generated by double neutron star (DNS) systems in circular orbits during their periodic and quasi-periodic phases. Our aim here is to describe a new method to calculate such spectra, which is based on an analogy with a problem of Statistical Mechanics. Besides, an important characteristic of our method is to consider the time evolution of the orbital parameters.

ResumoBinary Systems are the the most studied sources of gravitational radiation, both theoretically and observationally. Theoretically, the mechanisms of emission and the behaviuor of the orbital parameters are well known and can be written in analytic form in several cases, which is a great advantage in terms of computational work; observationally, even though gravitational waves have not been detected yet, the strongest indication of the its existence have arisen from the observation of binary systems, more specifically the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar. When one begins to detect gravitational radiation, one of the observed pattern of the signals will probably be of stochastic background nature because there will be a superposition of the signals emited by a plenty of sources around the Universe. So, our task here is to develop a method for summing the gravitational waves emited by cosmological binary compact systems in order to find out the shape of the spectra, that is, we will develop a method for obtaining the stochastic background generated by these systems. We use here an analogy with a problem of statistical mechanics in order to perform this sum, besides taking into account the temporal variation of the orbital parameters of the systems..

ResumoThere is in the literature a number of papers addressing the stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs) generated by an ensemble of astrophysical sources. The main ingredient in such studies is the so called star formation rate density (SFRD), which gives the density of stars formed per unit time. Some authors argue, however, that there is, in the equation that determines the amplitude of the stochastic background of GWs, an additional (1 + z) term dividing the SFRD, which would account for the effect of cosmic expansion onto the time variable. We argue here that the inclusion of this additional term is wrong. In order to clarify where the inclusion of the (1 + z) term is really necessary, we briefly discuss the calculation of event rates in the study of GRBs (gamma ray bursts) from cosmological origin. .

ResumoThere is in the literature a number of papers addressing the stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs) generated by an ensemble of astrophysical sources. The main ingredient in such studies is the so called star formation rate density (SFRD), which gives the density of stars formed per unit time. Some authors argue, however, that there is, in the equation that determines the amplitude of the stochastic background of GWs, an additional (1+z) term dividing the SFRD, which would account for the effect of cosmic expansion onto the time variable. We argue here that the inclusion of this additional term is wrong. In order to clarify where the inclusion of the (1+z) term is really necessary, we briefly discuss the calculation of event rates in the study of GRBs (gamma ray bursts) from cosmological origin.

ResumoBinary systems are the most studied sources of gravitational waves. The mechanisms of emission and the behavior of the orbital parameters are well known and can be written in analytic form in several cases. Besides, the strongest indication of the existence of gravitational waves has arisen from the observation of binary systems. On the other hand, when the detection of gravitational radiation becomes a reality, one of the observed pattern of the signals will be probably of stochastic background nature, which are characterized by a superposition of signals emitted by many sources around the universe. Our aim here is to develop an alternative method of calculating such backgrounds emitted by cosmological compact binary systems during their periodic or quasiperiodic phases. We use an analogy with a problem of statistical mechanics in order to perform this sum as well as taking into account the temporal variation of the orbital parameters of the systems. Such a kind of background is of particular importance since it could well form an important foreground for the planned gravitational wave interferometers DECI-Hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO), Big Bang Observer (BBO), Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) or Evolved LISA (eLISA), Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (ALIGO), and Einstein Telescope (ET).

ResumoIn this work, we consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGWs) produced by pre-galactic stars, which form black holes in scenarios of structure formation. The calculation is performed in the framework of hierarchical structure formation using a PressSchechter-like formalism. Our model reproduces the observed star formation rate at redshifts z≲ 6.5 . The signal predicted in this work is below the sensitivity of the first generation of detectors but could be detectable by the next generation of ground-based interferometers. Specifically, correlating two coincident advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors (LIGO III interferometers), the expected signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) could be as high as 90 (10) for stars forming at redshift z≃ 20 with a Salpeter initial mass function with slope x= 0.35 (1.35), and if the efficiency of generation of gravitational waves, namely, εGW is close to the maximum value ∼7 × 10−4 . However, the sensitivity of the future third generation of detectors as, for example, the European antenna EGO could be high enough to produce S/N > 3 same with εGW∼ 2 × 10−5 . We also discuss what astrophysical information could be derived from a positive (or even negative) detection of the SBGWs investigated here.

Resumohe detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of genetically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Omega(T)(0) < 5.58 x 10(-8), Omega(V)(0) < 6.35 x 10(-8), and Omega(S)(0) < 1.08 x 10(-7) at a reference frequency f(0) = 25 Hz.
