ResumoWe study the putative emission of gravitational waves (GWs) in particular for pulsars with measured braking index. We show that the appropriate combination of both GW emission and magnetic dipole brakes can naturally explain the measured braking index, when the surface magnetic field and the angle between the magnetic dipole and rotation axes are time dependent. Then we discuss the detectability of these very pulsars by aLIGO and the Einstein Telescope.

ResumoFrom the field equations in the linear regime of the characteristic formulation of general relativity, Bishop, for a Schwarzschild´s background, and Madler, for a Minkowski´s background, were able to show that it is possible to derive a fourth order ordinary differential equation, called master equation, for the J metric variable of the BondiSachs metric. Once beta, another Bondi-Sachs potential, is obtained from the field equations, and J is obtained from the master equation, the other metric variables are solved integrating directly the rest of the field equations. In the past, the master equation was solved for the first multipolar terms, for both the Minkowski´s and Schwarzschild´s backgrounds. Also, Madler recently reported a generalization of the exact solutions to the linearised field equations when a Minkowski´s background is considered, expressing the master equation family of solutions for the vacuum in terms of Bessel´s functions of the first and the second kind. Here, we report new solutions to the master equation for any multipolar moment l, with and without matter sources in terms only of the first kind Bessel´s functions for the Minkowski, and in terms of the Confluent Heun´s functions (Generalised Hypergeometric) for radiative (nonradiative) case in the Schwarzschild´s background. We particularize our families of solutions for the known cases for l =2 reported previously in the literature and find complete agreement, showing the robustness of our results.

ResumoThe Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

ResumoThe Earth's upper atmosphere presents a region particularly rich of free electrons, the ionosphere. Such high concentration makes the ionosphere the major natural contributor to the degraded quality of the GNSS signals received at ground. In polar regions, such as in Antarctica, this degradation can be stronger, creating serious problems in using GNSS devices for logistic and scientific purposes. An ionosphere monitoring station, based on a GNSS signal acquisition system and on a software radio receiver, has been installed in two research stations in Antarctica, in the frame of the DemoGRAPE project. The full system is not only able to monitor TEC and scintillation activity in GPS L1 C/A and L2C signals, but also to grab and store raw unprocessed samples for postprocessing analysis by means of software radio techniques. This paper presents the description of the setup and of the installation of the system as well as a report of the first results obtained by processing the data acquired during the first week of operation.

ResumoThis paper addresses the design and implementation of an Ionospheric Scintillation Monitoring Receiver based on the Software Defined Radio paradigm. The monitoring platform exploits a digital data grabber and a GNSS fully software receiver, which grants a high level of flexibility for the processing strategy and the storage of raw samples of the signals in case of meaningful scintillation events. Such an implementation approach yields valuable advantages in critical areas, such as polar regions, where resources are limited and installation or maintenance and replacement of GNSS receivers may be critical. The paper describes the successful installations of the platforms in two Antarctic stations, providing results at the same quality level of professional GNSS receivers used for ionospheric scintillation monitoring.

ResumoXIPE, the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer, is a mission dedicated to X-ray Astronomy. At the time of writing XIPE is in a competitive phase A as fourth medium size mission of ESA (M4). It promises to reopen the polarimetry window in high energy Astrophysics after more than 4 decades thanks to a detector that efficiently exploits the photoelectric effect and to X-ray optics with large effective area. XIPE uniqueness is time-spectrallyspatially-resolved X-ray polarimetry as a breakthrough in high energy astrophysics and fundamental physics. Indeed the payload consists of three Gas Pixel Detectors at the focus of three X-ray optics with a total effective area larger than one XMM mirror but with a low weight. The payload is compatible with the fairing of the Vega launcher. XIPE is designed as an observatory for X-ray astronomers with 75 % of the time dedicated to a Guest Observer competitive program and it is organized as a consortium across Europe with main contributions from Italy, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden.

Resumoη Carinae is known to be a massive binary system, but some of the orbital parameters remain uncertain. The nature of the periodic minima seen in several spectral features are associated with periastron passages near stellar conjunction, but its nature has been interpreted either as a low excitation event or as an eclipse of the hotter secondary star by the dense inner wind of the primary. We conducted an intense spectroscopic monitoring of the He II λ4686 emission line across the 2014.6 event using ground- and space-based telescopes. Comparison with results from the past two events confirmed the stability of the equivalent width and radial velocity of this line, as well as the strict periodicity of its minima. In combination with different other measurements, the orbital period is 2022.7 (±0.3) d. We adopted a power law model in combination with the total opacity in the line of sight to the apex of the wind-wind collision region obtained from hydrodynamic simulations to reproduce the observed He II λ4686 equivalent width curve. We constrained the orbital inclination to 135°153° and the longitude of periastron to 234°252°. Periastron passage occurred on T (2014.6)=2456874.4 (±1.3) d. With these orbital elements, we successfully reproduced both the equivalent width curve observed from our direct view of the central source and the polar view. This suggests that the He II λ4686 minimum is ultimately caused by an increase in the opacity in the line of sight to the emitting region as the secondary star moves behind the primary star and plunges into denser regions of its wind.
