ResumoA particle filter, specifically a Bayesian bootstrap filter algorithm, is applied for estimating the state vector that characterizes the orbit of a satellite, using a set of GPS measurements. The development will be evaluated through performance and computational cost, comparing the bootstrap algorithm results against the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) solution for the same problem. The orbit determination is a nonlinear problem, with respect to the dynamics and the measurements equations, in which the disturbing forces and the measurements are not easily modeled. It consists essentially of estimating values that completely specify the body trajectory in the space, processing a set of measurements related to this body. Such observations can be collected through a tracking network grounded on Earth or through sensors, like GPS receivers onboard the satellite. The GPS is a wide spread system that allows computation of orbits for artificial Earth satellites by providing many redundant measurements (pseudo-ranges). The bootstrap filter is proposed for implementing recursive Bayesian filters. It is a statistical, brute-force approach to estimation that often works well for systems that are highly nonlinear. Here, the bootstrap particle filter will be implemented with resampling and roughening, a scheme for combating the reduction in the number of truly distinct sample values.

ResumoOne of the most interesting asteroids to be visited is the so called 2001SN263. It is a triple system and its components have diameters around 2.8 km, 1.2 km and 0.5 km. A mission to this asteroid is under study by several institutions in Brazil nowadays. There are many aspects to be considered in a mission of this type. Since the idea is to study the three bodies that belong to this system, close approaches will occur between the spacecraft and the two smaller bodies during the observation of those bodies, what makes the study of the effects of those close approaches a very important topic, because those modifications may generate situations where the spacecraft escapes from the system. On the other side, those modifications of the orbit can be used to help the required maneuvers that need to be made in the spacecraft in order to make a more complete observation of the system. This type of study is the main goal of the present paper. After that, a second study is made, considering the use of tethers in order to combine the collection of samples from the components of the asteroid with a change in the energy of the spacecraft due to the "Tethered Assisted Swing-By Maneuver". In this type of maneuver the rotation of the spacecraft generated by the tether can give variations of energy around four orders of magnitude larger than the ones that comes from the close approach. After studying this maneuver for the 2001SN263 system a short exploration of the Jupiter-Adrastea system is made, since it offers very high energy variations, enough to capture a spacecraft coming from the Earth, in particular a nanosatellite, around Jupiter.

ResumoSurveillance systems have presented to be important applications for high performance thermal control devices, especially passive ones using heat pipe technology. This is usually applied when the heat source is located far from the heat sink and the use of liquid cooling or any other active thermal control system is not possible. Design and application of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) and heat pipes become an indicated solution especially for restricted areas for integration. This investigation is focused on presenting the thermal control management of electronic components of a surveillance system using an open loop PHP with conventional heat pipes. Despite the relatively high temperature differences observed between the heat source and sink (up to 25 °C), the open loop PHP was able to transport the rejected heat (up to 40 W) from the electronic components to a remote heat dissipation area, while keeping their temperatures within the required range (below 80 °C) with relatively high thermal conductances (up to 1.6 W/°C). The heat pipe has demonstrated the capability of spreading the heat, positively affecting the PHP operation, as this combined solution has proven to be stable and reliable with promising results.

ResumoHeat pipes are two-phase heat transfer devices with high thermal capacity, able to transport large quantities of heat with little difference between the temperature of the evaporation and condensation sections, presenting a highly efficient heat transfer process. This technology has found increasing applications in improving the thermal performance and heat dissipation of electronics and other components in aerospace missions (satellites and spacecrafts) and it is widely used today. Also, heat pipes have found applications to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers in many industrial environments. The use of heat pipes in heat exchangers allows the development of more compact and efficient equipments when compared to traditional heat exchangers. For some applications, such as heat recovery in industrial process, the use of the heat pipes on heat exchangers presents to be rather interesting due to an increased efficiency along with more compact equipments. Mid-level temperature heat pipes have found applications both in aerospace and industry, and their development has found interest in those areas. Focusing this scenario, this paper presents and investigation on the operation of heat pipes at designed for medium level temperatures (up to 200 °C) using water as working fluids. Testing results of three different configurations of heat pipes using those working fluids have shown reliable operation when cyclic heat loads are applied, with fast responses. The obtained results show that the heat pipes' configurations investigated are able to reach thermal conductances up to 18 W/oC and could be used in several industrial (for heat recovering systems) and aerospace applications when those levels of temperature are required.
