AbstractSensible and latent heat fluxes were estimated over a large tropical hydroelectric reservoir under cold front conditions. In situ and satellite data were used to adjust the bulk coefficients for momentum and heat exchanges between water and atmosphere and spatialize the sensible and latent heat fluxes over the reservoir. The results showed that during a cold front event the sensible and latent heat fluxes can be up to three times greater than the fluxes before and after the cold front passage. The main source of heat loss to atmosphere during the cold front passage was the evaporation (i.e. latent heat) reaching values near to 500 W m-2. The highest values of heat loss were observed at littoral zone and some embayment of reservoir. The increase in wind speed and decrease in air temperature and humidity during the cold front event were the main factors that influenced the heat loss.

AbstractAlthough KML files can be used to describe journeys, there is not a standard way to represent them as moving object trajectories for further analysis. In the KML schema, there is not a predefined element to describe a moving object trajectory. Each software or mobile device that generates KML files with trajectories uses its own structure for representing them. Therefore, this work proposes an interoperable way to extract moving object trajectories from any KML file, based on the processing of an additional metadata file. This metadata file is an XML that must be compliant with an XML schema proposed in this paper. This proposal has been implemented in a geographical software library as a proof of concept.

AbstractQuality control of climate data obtained from weather stations is essential to ensure reliability of research and services based on this data. One way to perform this control is to compare data received from one station with data from other stations which somehow are expected to show similar behavior. The purpose of this work is to evaluate some visual data mining techniques to identify groupings (and outliers of these groupings) of weather stations using historical precipitation data in a specific time interval. We present and discuss the techniques details, variants, results and applicability on this type of problem.

AbstractMultitemporal remote sensing imagery is a source of valuable information for land change analysis. Certain types of land cover can be monitored with low spatial resolution but high temporal resolution. From this data it is possible to create temporal profiles of the regions during an entire year. This scenario results in a database with huge volume of information. Therefore manual techniques are unfeasible for classifying this data. Automatic methods arise as an appealing alternative, and this work shows preliminary results of identifying land changes in a region of Mato Grosso state, Brazil. We propose the use of temporal profiles of vegetation indices and features extracted from the profiles, gathering the traditional features with linearity measures. Decision trees algorithm were used to define a classification model to distinguish agricultural sites from other land uses.

AbstractMajority of land use/cover classification studies are based on the use of spectral signatures at the per-pixel level, while ignoring spatial features inherent in an image. The maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) may be the most common classification method in practice, but the object-based classification (OBC) method has been obtained increasingly attention due to its capability of incorporating spatial information in a classification procedure. This paper provides a comparison of MLC and OBC based on different datasets Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), ALOS PALSAR L-band, and their combinations. Through comparative analysis of the classification results, we found that the OBC method cannot significantly improve overall land use/cover classification accuracy comparing with the maximum likelihood classification, but it indeed improve some vegetation classes having complex forest stand structure, and the OBC method is especially valuable for higher spatial resolution images. Also the OBC method has better performance than MLC when a combination of Landsat TM and PALSAR L-band data as extra bands is used.

AbstractThe objective of the study was to compare the spectra of two reservoirs: a urban reservoir (Santo Anasta´cio) and a rural reservoir (Oro´s) and to measure their similarity by means of cluster analyses. Sixteen radiometric measures were carried out in each reservoir, using the FieldSpec®Hi-Res spectroradiometer. Water samples were taken at 30cm depth, concurrently with spectral measurements, for analytical determination of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended solids (TSS). Electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and Secchi depth transparency (SD), were also measured. Cluster analysis, based in the agglomerative hierarchical method of the spectra resulted in three groups. Group 1 was characterized by high concentrations of Chl-a, ranging from 61.97 to 171.91 μg/L. Group 2 by Chl-a, ranging from 14.79 to 57.19 μg/L and Group 3 where the opticall active component controlling the water reflectance was the SST with concentration varying between 15.25 to 99.00 mg/L. All spectra from Santo Anasta´cio (Urban) reservoir were classified in the group1, whereas the spectra from Oros were included in Groups 2 and 3. The results show that the cluster-analysis technique of the water spectra can be used to discriminate water masses of urban reservoirs from those of rural reservoirs provided that their optically active components are different.

AbstractNormally remote sensing image classification is performed pixelwise which produces a noisy classification. One way of improving such results is dividing the classification process in two steps. First, uniform regions by some criterion are detected and afterwards each unlabeled region is assigned to class of the "nearest" class using a so-called stochastic distance. The statistics are estimated by taking in account all the reference pixels. Three variations are investigated. The first variation is to assign to the unlabeled region a class that has the minimum average distance between this region and each one of reference samples of that class. The second is to assign the class of the closest reference sample. The third is to assign the most frequent class of the k closest reference regions. A simulation study is done to assess the performances. The simulations suggested that the most robust and simple approach is the second variation.

AbstractMapping of urban land cover using remote sensing technology has been widely explored, especially with the recent availability of high resolution images and object-based processing techniques. This study uses the InterIMAGE system and WorldView-2 orbital sensor imagery, two technologies which are new and still little explored in urban studies, to classify land cover in five test-sites near to the western section of Rodoanel Mário Covas, a ring-road that surrounds the metropolitan area of São Paulo, Brazil. The work hypothesis is: the spectral resolution increase of WorldView-2 imagery, compared to previous sensor systems, can improve the identification of urban targets, and consequently, improve the land cover classification. To evaluate the effects of the increase on spectral resolution of WorldView-2 system images, we simulated an image based on data from the QuickBird-2 sensor. Moreover, the framework for image classification InterIMAGE, which has been developed by PUC-RJ in cooperation with INPE, shows great potential for classifying complex urban areas. The proposed methodology is efficient to map the land cover in complex urban areas and the final classification of WorldView-2 images achieved an overall accuracy of 83% and a Kappa Accuracy Index of 0.81. The typical classification conflicts were solved, with a good identification of fifteen land cover classes. The results showed that the new spectral bands of the WorldView-2 were essential for discriminating some urban objects such as Ceramic Tile and Bare Soil, usually, difficult to be identified with other sensors of high spatial resolution, such as QuickBird-2.

AbstractThis work aims at comparing the performance of different segmentation algorithms in an example of SAR image from Amazonia. The comparison was made by evaluating measures associated with regions and borders of segments obtained by each of the tested optic-specific and SAR-specific segmentation routines. In optic-specific segmentation, some filtering pre-processing was needed to adjust the SAR image to further segmentation. In order to access the accuracy, the segmentations were compared with a reference image through a quantitative evaluation fashion. The results showed by graphs indicate superiority of SAR-specific segmentation performance.
