ResumoChlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is adopted as an indicator of water quality, especially of eutrophic stage. This information is useful for the management of water quality and the monitoring of water pollution. Traditional water quality monitoring is expensive and time consuming. These factors are particularly problematic if the water bodies to be examined are large. Moreover traditional techniques also bring about a high probability of undersampling. Conversely, remote sensing is a powerful tool to assess aquatic systems and is particularly useful in remote areas [1]. Models to estimate Chl-a concentrations are commonly empirically or semi-analytically based. Empirical approaches rely on a specific spectral feature, such as a spectral ratio modeled to biophysical measurements using statistical regression [2]. The objective of this work is to empirically search for best wavelength to develop statistical models to retrieve the Chl-a concentration in a tropical hydroelectric reservoir in Brazil.

ResumoThis study aims at carrying out a bio-optical characterization of two Brazilian hydroelectric reservoirs as a support to current investigation regarding their net carbon budget. This characterization is a key step for both (1) developing bio-optical models to retrieve water constituents by remote sensing and (2) describing the availability of light for photosynthesis, whose information is essential to understand biogeochemical processes related to emissions of methane and carbon dioxide in aquatic systems. Twenty-two sampling stations were profiled at each reservoir, using an attenuation-absorption meter (ACS-WET Labs) and a set of six Ramses radiometers (TriOS). Water samples were acquired at each sampling station for determining concentrations of optically active constituents. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the concentration of constituents which ranged from 1.17-40.45ugL-1 for chlorophyll-a, 0.26-20.41 mgL-1 for total suspended sediments, 0.93-9.48 mgL-1 for dissolved total carbon and 0.93-3.87 m-1 for CDOM absorption. The diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd(PAR)), ranged from 0.35 to 4.03 m-1 while euphotic depth (Zeu (1%)) ranged from 1.14 to 13.06 m.

ResumoWe present an investigation of surface deformation using Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) time-series carried out in an active open pit iron mine, the N5W, located in the Carajás Mineral Province (Brazilian Amazon region), using 33 TerraSAR-X (TSX-1) scenes. This mine has presented a historical of instability and surface monitoring measurements over sectors of the mine (pit walls) have been done based on ground based radar. Two complementary approaches were used: the standard DInSAR configuration, as an early warning of the slope instability conditions, and the DInSAR timeseries analysis. In order to decrease the topographic phase error a high resolution DEM was generated based on a stereo GeoEye-1 pair. Despite the fact that a DinSAR contains atmospheric and topographic phase artifacts and noise, it was possible to detect deformation in some interferometric pairs, covering pit benches, road ramps and waste piles. The timeseries analysis was performed using the 31 interferometric pairs, which were selected based on the highest mean coherence of a stack of 107 interferograms, presenting less phase unwrapping errors. The time-series deformation was retrieved by the Least-Squares (LS) solution using an extension of the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), with a set of additional weighted constrain on the acceleration deformation. The atmospheric phase artifacts were filtered in the spacetime domain and the DEM height errors were estimated based on the normal baseline diversity. The DInSAR time-series investigation showed good results for monitoring surface displacement in the N5W mine located in a tropical rainforest environment, providing very useful information about the ground movement for alarm, planning and risk assessment.

ResumoThis paper presents a possible procedure to identify critical regions extracting drainage networks from surface model. Qualitative comparison between drainage network extraction from surface and elevation models, both representing the relief, was done. This comparison highlights the differences between drainages extracted from both models and it shows the same critical patterns. For the study area, the radar data was obtained from airborne SAR AES-2 (AeroSensing) with p-band and x-band sensors. Both the elevation model (p-band) and the surface model (x-band) have 2.5m of horizontal resolution. The elevation model represents the actual relief of the land surface, while the surface model is influenced by the coverage of the Earth's surface. This model may show problems in regions with forest, because the canopy of trees forms the relief. Deforestation also causes errors in the drainage representation, leading to spurious drainage formation. To identify where differences occur, a remote sensing image was used. This image was classified to identify forest regions and places with deforestation occurrence. The drainages were superimposed over the classified image to contextualize the critical areas. The remote sensing image was obtained from the Resourcesat-1 satellite, also known as IRS-P6, built by the Indian Space Research Organization, porting the LISS 3 camera operating in three spectral bands (0.52-0.59μm; 0.62-0.68μm; 0.77-0.86μm), yielding 23.5m of horizontal resolution. The Height Above the Nearest Drainage (HAND) parameter, a useful terrain descriptor, was used to find the critical areas in the surface model. TerraHidro, a hydrological modeling system, was used to extract the drainage networks.
