AbstractThis paper presents a general approach for the time-domain analysis of transmission lines composed of inductive and capacitive lumped elements. First order time differential equations are derived for the distributions of voltages and currents along the line, thus allowing analysis of transient regimes of the lines being excited by a pulse of arbitrary shape. In particular we examine the propagation characteristics of periodic lines in which identical unit cells are repeated periodically, especially the interpretation of positive and negative phase velocities associated with the LC and CL topologies.

AbstractA nonlinear lumped element transmission line (NLETL) that consists of a series cascading network of linear inductors and parallel nonlinear capacitors can be used to produce oscillating pulses. This paper describes the implementation of such high voltage nonlinear capacitive lines (NLCL) using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components. Instead of using complex pulse forming networks or pulse forming lines, a storage capacitor and a fast semiconductor switch are used to provide an input pulse onto the cascading LC-elements of the NLCL with good approximation for a rectangular pulse-shape. The design of the NLCL is based on the NLETL circuit model that has been developed in-house. Experimental results are compared with simulations predicted by the NLETL model. The voltage modulation and the frequency content of the output pulses are analyzed. The conventional single NLCL produces a signal with a DC offset and a decoupling capacitor is needed at the end of the line to extract the AC component before injecting into a load such as an antenna. A novel method of directly extracting the AC component without the use of a decoupling capacitor is proposed and investigated. Results of this direct AC extraction, which show the possibility of better performance, are discussed.

AbstractThis work describes a simple heat conduction model for optimizing the laser welding process. The model is compared to experimental results obtained on welding of AA6013 aluminum alloy using an Yb-fiber laser. A very good agreement had been obtained by adjusting the plasma power attenuation and material thermal conductivity coefficients.

AbstractThe objective of this paper is the study of ceramic dielectrics for nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) applications in high-voltage (HV) compact pulsed power systems at high frequencies. Barium and strontium titanate (BST) ceramics have been used with great success as excellent dielectrics in the construction of high voltage (HV) commercial ceramic capacitors with reduced dimensions because of their high dielectric constant. However, the attempts to reach frequencies above 500 MHz up to 1 GHz using BST ceramics in nonlinear lumped lines have been unsuccessful due to the loss in the dielectric material that limits the operating frequencies up to about 250 MHz. On the other hand, these results indicated that the use of a lower loss nonlinear dielectric of reduced permittivity could be the solution for achieving higher frequencies in nonlinear capacitive lines. Therefore, the main point of this work is to characterize another type of ceramic known as PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate), which is promising for NLTL applications.

AbstractThis paper deals with synthesis of thermoplastic composites from CFs treated by PIII processing at different treatment times, 2, 5, 10 and 15 min. The characterization of CFs samples was carried out using the following analyses: SEM, XPS, AFM and Raman spectroscopy. After this previous characterization of the CF reinforcement, the thermoplastic laminate was produced using hot compression molding technology. The laminate was characterized by Interlaminar shear test (ILSS) and SEM analysis. After the PIII treatments there was an increase in the surface roughness and an introduction of the polar groups on the carbon fiber surface. These modifications enhance the adhesion in the composites interface as confirmed by ILSS tests that show up to double increase in the shear strenght in comparison to composites obtained from untreated CFs.
