ResumoWe are pleased to present the proceedings of the Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event ‐ JURSE 2013. The event, organized by the National Institute for Space Research INPE (Brazil) and the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro ‐ PUC‐Rio (Brazil), takes place in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 21 to 23, 2013. This biannual international event is for the first time held in South America, revealing the world‐wide reach of this scientific field, dedicated to explore cutting‐edge themes in urban remote sensing with respect to the Information Technology and Geoscience. JURSE 2013 is designed to be a forum of excellence where a selected group of researchers, practitioners, officers from national and international agencies, and academicians will present and discuss their latest findings and results. This event is committed to introduce innovative methodologies and technological resources recently employed to investigate the manifold aspects of the urban environment through orbital and airborne remote sensing data. The meeting gathers over 100 participants from the European, Asian, North and South American, and Australian continents and its technical program comprises oral and poster presentations, 2 keynote talks and 3 plenary talks. The IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing − JSTARS − will encourage the publication of high‐quality papers presented at JURSE 2013. Finally, we expect that JURSE 2013 reaches its ultimate goal in promoting the interaction among researchers, practitioners, academicians, and decision makers involved with remote sensing for urban studies, and in fostering the up rise of new ideas and solutions in terms of methodological and technological resources meant for the investigation of urban areas with the aid of remote sensing. We as well expect that JURSE 2013 proceedings may be an important reference for those committed with the continuous advance of urban remote sensing.
