ResumoThe South America Pantanal is a large floodplain wetland in the center of the Upper Paraguay River Basin, which has a total area of around 360,000 km2. Large sectors of the Pantanal floodplain are submerged from 4 to 8 months each year by water depths from a few centimeters to more than 2 m. Changes in rainfall and temperature and also on land use can affect significantly the flood season with severe consequences for downstream inhabitants. However, impact of climate change on wetlands is small so far compared to the damage caused by the lack of management at the local level due to land-use change. In this chapter we assess climate and hydrology variability for the present and projections of climate change using the global climate models from the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Projections show that by the end of the century, temperatures can increase up to 7°C and rainfall can decrease in both summer and particularly winter. The possibility of longer dry spells and increased evaporation may affect the water balance in the region. However, uncertainties on climate projections are still high, particular for rainfall.

ResumoTropical forests play a critical role in the global carbon budget, and the Amazon region in South America has particular importance since it represents half the worlds rainforest area and is home to one-third of Earths species. In the recent past, parts of Brazilian Amazon faced high rates of deforestation, and this process has led to changes in the environment and society. Since the 1960s, strategies for the occupation of Brazilian Amazon have promoted land use and land cover change that led to deforesting of about 18 % of the original vegetation cover. The main drivers of changes in land use and land cover in the past 50 years have been infrastructure development, financial incentives to land occupation, agriculture and pasture. Deforestation has affected biodiversity, soil structure, hydrological regime and local climate, and, through a positive feedback, it is likely to be affecting regional climate beyond the Amazon basin. We provide an overview of the extent and dynamics of land use and land use change in Brazilian Amazon forest from 1960 to 2013 and discuss the environmental and social aspects related to the deforestation process.

ResumoThe search for a sustainable model of development for the Brazilian Amazon has underpinned an increasing number of public policy decisions and new legislation governing how land is managed in order to conserve and maintain ecosystem functions and services. Socio-environmentalism constitutes a relatively recent paradigm of Brazilian public policy that emerged in the 1990s as a response to poorly planned infrastructure projects and continued deforestation that undermined the conservation of biodiversity and the resilience of the socioecological system established by traditional and indigenous communities. However, the rapid development of agribusiness across many parts of the region, together with a large number of new major infrastructure developments including mega-dams, roads and large mining projects, continues to generate conflict with traditional populations and smallholders and cause widespread ecological degradation. This chapter presents an overview of land use systems in the Brazilian Amazon and analyses two development models associated with starkly different historical trajectories of landscape change: landscapes dominated by community-based projects and small farmers (termed social-nature landscapes, strongly influenced by the socio-environmentalist movement) and landscapes dominated by large-scale agriculture (neo-nature landscapes, strongly influenced by the agribusiness sector). We discuss the social and ecological implications of these two contrasting models for sustainable development in the region.
