ResumoThe concept of well-being has evolved over the past several decades as research has continued to reveal its multidimensional, dynamic, person-specific and culture-specific nature. Most recently, the ecological embeddedness of well-being has also gained recognition, and this development of the concept demands that we explore and identify new conceptual frameworks and appropriate methodological approaches towards the assessment of quality of life within a socioecological context. This paper offers a review of seminal and current research in the fields of social indicators, human development, ecological economics, and natural resources management, with the aim of examining the concept and the various methodologies designed to assess both the objective and subjective components and the multiple dimensions that comprise well-being. We also present some methodological approaches that have the capacity to account for the role of ecosystem services, considering several studies of rural populations whose well-being depends on the flow of ecosystem services, highlighting the participatory methods these studies employed to identify and assess locally relevant well-being indicators, and addressing some of the challenges inherent in such methods. We conclude with an appraisal of what we regard as the most appropriate methodological approach for measuring human well-being in the socioecological context. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

ResumoChlorophyll-a (chl-a) is a central water quality parameter that has been estimated through remote sensing bio-optical models. This work evaluated the performance of three well established reflectance based bio-optical algorithms to retrieve chl-a from in situ hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance datasets collected during three field campaigns in the Funil reservoir (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). A Monte Carlo simulation was applied for all the algorithms to achieve the best calibration. The Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) got the lowest error (17.85%). The in situ hyperspectral dataset was used to simulate the Ocean Land Color Instrument (OLCI) spectral bands by applying its spectral response function. Therefore, we evaluated its applicability to monitor water quality in tropical turbid inland waters using algorithms developed for MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data. The application of OLCI simulated spectral bands to the algorithms generated results similar to the in situ hyperspectral: an error of 17.64% was found for NDCI. Thus, OLCI data will be suitable for inland water quality monitoring using MERIS reflectance based bio-optical algorithms.

ResumoThe last few decades have been marked by important changes in the Brazilian agriculture, especially with respect to crop-management practices. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of cropping systems in a typical agricultural river basin in the state of Mato Grosso. Landsat satellite images and time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer vegetation index profiles were analyzed from 2000 to 2010. First, we assessed the horizontal expansion that occurred in the agricultural areas. Subsequently, using the product MOD13Q1, some metrics were established to identify the vertical intensification of soil use (single-or double-cropping systems). Results showed stagnation in the expansion of new deforested areas for agriculture in the 2003/2004 growing season, with simultaneous vertical intensification of agriculture. The adoption of the double-cropping system (e. g., soybean/corn and soybean/cotton) expanded by 266% during the studied period and reached 56% of the croplands in the 2009/2010 growing season.

ResumoMODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data are largely used in multitemporal analysis of various Earth-related phenomena, such as vegetation phenology, land use/land cover change, deforestation monitoring, and time series analysis. In general, the MODIS products used to undertake multitemporal analysis are composite mosaics of the best pixels over a certain period of time. However, it is common to find bad pixels in the composition that affect the time series analysis. We present a filtering methodology that considers the pixel position (location in space) and time (position in the temporal data series) to define a new value for the bad pixel. This methodology, called Window Regression (WR), estimates the value of the point of interest, based on the regression analysis of the data selected by a spatial-temporal window. The spatial window is represented by eight pixels neighboring the pixel under evaluation, and the temporal window selects a set of dates close to the date of interest (either earlier or later). Intensities of noises were simulated over time and space, using the MOD13Q1 product. The method presented and other techniques (4253H twice, Mean Value Iteration (MVI) and Savitzky-Golay) were evaluated using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Akaike Information Criteria (AIC). The tests revealed the consistently superior performance of the Window Regression approach to estimate new Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values irrespective of the intensity of the noise simulated. © 2014 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

(1938) identified four negative stepped leader events that they term β2, a rather rare variant of the type β leader, and in it, the second and slower stage of the leader is associated with the appearance of one or more fast dart streamers, which travel rapidly down from the cloud along the previously formed track and cease when they have caught up with the slower leader tip. Seven negative downward leaders that agreed with the description given by Schonland et al. for type β2 were recorded in Tucson, Arizona, USA, and in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. All cases were recorded by a high-speed camera operating at 4000 frames per second, and electric field changes were measured for three of them. Their dart streamers had speeds between 106 and 107 m s−1, compatible with previous observations of recoil leaders (RLs). Also, during the development of the three cases with correlated electric field changes, it was possible to identify sequences of microsecond-scale pulses preceding the propagation of a dart streamer in the channel. It is proposed that the luminous process that occurs during the development of a type β2 stepped leader is the visible manifestation of one or more RLs that begin inside the cloud and connect to the in-cloud, positive portion of the bipolar, bidirectional leader, and then travel downward to the lower end of the negative stepped leader path.

ResumoIn this work, we examine the atmospheric and ionospheric responses to the January 2013 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event. To examine the atmospheric and ionospheric behavior during this event, three main parameters are used (1) Total Electron Content (TEC) collected from the International Global Positioning System and from the Brazilian Network of Continuous Monitoring stations, (2) daytime E × B vertical drift derived from the magnetometers located at the equatorial station Alta Floresta (9.9°S, 55.9°W, dip latitude 1.96°) and an off-equatorial station Cuiaba (15.3°S, 56.0°W, dip latitude 7.10°), both in the Brazilian sector, (3) the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) meridional and zonal wind components measured by the Meteor Radar located at the southern midlatitude Santa Maria (29.4°S, 53.3°W, dip latitude 17.8°). We identify the anomalous variation in E × B drift based on later local-time migration of peak value with SSW days. A novel feature of the present study is the identification of the similar migration pattern in the TEC anomaly, in spite that the simultaneous solar flux increases during the SSW event. Other novel features are the amplification of the 1316 day period in the TEC anomaly during the SSW days and simultaneous amplification of this period in the meridional and zonal wind components in the MLT region, as far as 30°S. These aspects reveal the presence of coupled atmosphere-ionosphere dynamics during the SSW event and the amplification of the lunar and/or solar tidal component, a characteristic which is recently reported from the electrojet current measurements.

ResumoA problem that is frequently arising in the spectral mixture analysis is how to correctly identify the endmembers present in the scene. In the analysis of image data covering natural scenes, vegetation, bare soil, and shade/water are commonly assumed as endmembers, but other endmembers may also be present. This paper investigates an approach based on the analysis of residuals produced by the linear spectral mixing model for identifying potential missing endmembers. The basic proposition consists in assuming that larger residuals are caused by missing endmembers. The image is segmented in terms of the residuals, and the KolmogorovSmirnov test is applied to group segments that show similar residuals and are thus likely to include the same missing endmember. An approach to estimate the spectral response of the missing endmembers is also investigated. The proposed methodology is tested by using Thematic Mapper Landsat and Coupled Charge Device ChinaBrazil Earth Resources Satellite image data. In addition to vegetation, bare soil, and shade/water, two additional endmembers were included as missing endmembers (clouds and water bodies with a large load of suspended sediments). The tests have shown that the proposed methodology is capable of detecting image regions that include missing endmembers and of correctly estimating the corresponding spectral responses.

ResumoThis paper presents a technique for reducing speckle in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) imagery using nonlocal means and a statistical test based on stochastic divergences. The main objective is to select homogeneous pixels in the filtering area through statistical tests between distributions. This proposal uses the complex Wishart model to describe PolSAR data, but the technique can be extended to other models. The weights of the location-variant linear filter are function of the p-values of tests which verify the hypothesis that two samples come from the same distribution and, therefore, can be used to compute a local mean. The test stems from the family of (h-Æsymbol) divergences which originated in Information Theory. This novel technique was compared with the Boxcar, Refined Lee and IDAN filters. Image quality assessment methods on simulated and real data are employed to validate the performance of this approach. We show that the proposed filter also enhances the polarimetric entropy and preserves the scattering information of the targets. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ResumoRecent studies show that different types of ENSO influence the atmospheric fields differently. In this study, precipitation anomalies and extreme events over South America are analysed with relation to two types of ENSO [East (strong Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA) on East Pacific) and Central (strong SSTA on Central Pacific)]. The composites of precipitation anomalies, during these two types of ENSO, show that there are different patterns, e.g. during austral summer of Central El Niño (CEN) there are negative precipitation anomalies in eastern Brazil that do not exist in East El Niño (EEN), whereas in southern Brazil there are positive precipitation anomalies during EEN that do not exist in CEN. Furthermore, the anomalies are mostly stronger and more extensive during EEN (Central La Niña CLN) than in CEN (East La Niña ELN), although there are some exceptions, such as during austral spring in southern Brazil, where anomalies during CEN (ELN) are stronger than during EEN (CLN). The anomalous frequency of extreme precipitation events shows generally patterns consistent with the anomalous precipitation behaviour, though the patterns are not always coincident, because the regions with significant increase of frequency of extreme events tend to be more extensive than those with increased seasonal precipitation. When themonthly or seasonal atmospheric anomalies associated with a type of ENSO episode are very similar (opposite) to the atmospheric anomalies associated with extreme precipitation in a certain region, then a significant enhancement (suppression) of the frequency of extreme events is observed in that region during this type of episode.

ResumoIn recent years, there has been great interest in the study of nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) for high-power radio frequency (RF) generation. The periodicity of the NLTL accounts for dispersion effects, whereas its nonlinear elements (inductors and/or capacitors) are responsible for the nonlinear processes. Both of these mechanisms acting simultaneously on a propagating pulse allow the generation of high-frequency oscillations at the output. The objective of this paper is to study the quantifiable characteristics of these lines for RF generation by means of SPICE circuit simulation and on basis of experiments. The RF generation at 40 MHz is demonstrated through measurement of the fast Fourier transform of the RF signal extracted at the load and by comparison with the corresponding simulated spectrum. It is expected that the technique presented here can be useful for the design of NLTLs to drive compact RF antennas for space applications and defense mobile platforms.
