ResumoThe analysis of cosmic ray intensity variation seen by muon detectors at Earth's surface can help us to understand astrophysical, solar, interplanetary and geomagnetic phenomena. However, before comparing cosmic ray intensity variations with extraterrestrial phenomena, it is necessary to take into account atmospheric effects such as the temperature effect. In this work, we analyzed this effect on the Global Muon Detector Network (GMDN), which is composed of four ground-based detectors, two in the northern hemisphere and two in the southern hemisphere. In general, we found a higher temperature influence on detectors located in the northern hemisphere. Besides that, we noticed that the seasonal temperature variation observed at the ground and at the altitude of maximum muon production are in antiphase for all GMDN locations (low-latitude regions). In this way, contrary to what is expected in high-latitude regions, the ground muon intensity decrease occurring during summertime would be related to both parts of the temperature effect (the negative and the positive). We analyzed several methods to describe the temperature effect on cosmic ray intensity. We found that the mass weighted method is the one that best reproduces the seasonal cosmic ray variation observed by the GMDN detectors and allows the highest correlation with long-term variation of the cosmic ray intensity seen by neutron monitors.

ResumoThe effects of high-energy particle precipitation on mesospheric and stratospheric ozone have been investigated during the last decades. However, while these effects have been widely discussed for the auroral region, little is known about the role of the high-energy particle precipitation on the stratospheric composition and thermal structure in the tropical/subtropical region. Here we show that the spatial distribution of both the stratospheric ozone and temperature in the southern hemisphere matches the pattern of the Southern Hemisphere Magnetic Anomaly. We found that during the austral winter and spring, in the subtropical region (below 30°S), the reduction of the stratospheric ozone and temperature occurs systematically in the magnetic anomaly area. The differences between the temperatures inside the magnetic anomaly (60°W) and outside the anomaly (150°E) for 42.5°S from June to November are higher than 2 K. The maximum difference at this latitude is approximately 5.9 K and occurs in October during the austral spring.

ResumoIn this paper we carry out a comparative study of the daytime (7-18 LT) behavior of the near-equatorial ionospheric F region at the end of the long deep solar minimum (2009) with respect to that of the previous normal solar minimum (1995) in the Indian longitude sector using ionosonde observations of F layer parameters, radar observations of ExB drift, and the IRI-2012 (International Reference Ionosphere-2012) model. We investigate the F-2 and F-3 layer behaviors separately. The results reveal that the peak frequencies of the F layer (f(peak)), F-2 layer (f(o)F(2)), and F-3 layer (f(o)F(3)) in 2009 are consistently lower than those in 1995. Maximum difference in f(peak)/f(o)F(2)/f(o)F(3) between 2009 and 1995 observations is found in the equinoxes followed by winter and summer. The annual mean, seasonal mean, and 10day mean peak electron density (corresponding to f(peak)) in 2009 were lower than those in 1995 by as much as 34%, 46%, and 65%, respectively. Solar rotation effect is less conspicuous in 2009 than in 1995, consistent with the solar rotation signature in F-10.7. Observations also show considerable amount of equinoctial asymmetry in electron density, which is found to be closely linked with the corresponding asymmetry in the vertical ExB drift. Seasonal mean peak electron densities of the F layer (corresponding to f(peak)) and the F-2 layer (corresponding to f(o)F(2)) observed during the deep solar minimum of 2009 were smaller than those corresponding to IRI-2012 model f(o)F(2) by as much as 45% and 50%, respectively, underlining the need to incorporate the data collected during the long deep minimum in the IRI model. The unusually weak ionosphere observed in 2009 is discussed in terms of the direct effect of the low solar EUV flux in 2009 as compared to 1995 and its indirect effects on ionospheric electric field, thermospheric composition (or O/N-2 ratio), and thermospheric neutral winds.

ResumoWe analyze the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) density and its spatial gradient in Forbush Decreases (FDs) observed with the Global Muon Detector Network (GMDN) and neutron monitors (NMs). By superposing the GCR density and density gradient observed in FDs following 45 interplanetary shocks (IP-shocks), each associated with an identified eruption on the Sun, we infer the average spatial distribution of GCRs behind IP-shocks. We find two distinct modulations of GCR density in FDs, one in the magnetic sheath and the other in the coronal mass ejection (CME) behind the sheath. The density modulation in the sheath is dominant in the western flank of the shock, while the modulation in the CME ejecta stands out in the eastern flank. This east-west asymmetry is more prominent in GMDN data responding to ∼60 GV GCRs than in NM data responding to ∼10 GV GCRs, because of the softer rigidity spectrum of the modulation in the CME ejecta than in the sheath. The geocentric solar ecliptic-y component of the density gradient, G y, shows a negative (positive) enhancement in FDs caused by the eastern (western) eruptions, while G z shows a negative (positive) enhancement in FDs caused by the northern (southern) eruptions. This implies that the GCR density minimum is located behind the central flank of IP-shocks and propagating radially outward from the location of the solar eruption. We also confirmed that the average G z changes its sign above and below the heliospheric current sheet, in accord with the prediction of the drift model for the large-scale GCR transport in the heliosphere.

ResumoWith the substantial growth of solar photovoltaic installations worldwide, forecasting irradiance becomes a critical step in providing a reliable integration of solar electricity into electric power grids. In Singapore, the number of PV installation has increased with a growth rate of 70% over the past 6 years. Within the next decade, solar power could represent up to 20% of the instant power generation. Challenges for PV grid integration in Singapore arise from the high variability in cloud movements and irradiance patterns due to the tropical climate. For a thorough analysis and modeling of the impact of an increasing share of variable PV power on the electric power system, it is indispensable (i) to have an accurate conversion model from irradiance to solar power generation, and (ii) to carry out irradiance forecasting on various time scales. In this work, we demonstrate how common assumptions and simplifications in PV power conversion methods negatively affect the output estimates of PV systems power in a tropical and densely-built environment such as in Singapore. In the second part, we propose and test a novel hybrid model for short-term irradiance forecasting for short-term intervals. The hybrid model outperforms the persistence forecast and other common statistical methods.

ResumoElectromagnetic wave fluctuations driven by temperature anisotropy in plasmas are of interest for solar flare, solar corona, and solar wind studies. We investigate the dispersion characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagating perpendicular to the uniform magnetic field which is derived by using multiple particle distribution functions: Maxwellian, bi-kappa, and product bi-kappa. The presence of temperature anisotropy in which the parallel plasma kinetic energy density exceeding by a sufficient amount can lead to Weibel-like electromagnetic instability. A general description is made to calculate the growth/damping rates of Weibel-like modes when the temperature anisotropy and nonthermal features are associated with these distributions. We demonstrate that for the zeroth cyclotron harmonic, our results for bi-Maxwellian and bi-kappa overlap with each other, while the product bi-kappa distribution shows some dependence on parallel kappa index. For higher harmonics, the growth rates vanish and the damping prevails.

ResumoUsing the global ionospheric map of total electron content in 2002-2009, this paper investigates anomalous, midlatitude electron density enhancement (MEDE) bounded by a tropical electron density trough and the usual midlatitude electron density trough at all times (24h) of the day for the first time. The diurnal, seasonal, and longitudinal variations in the occurrence and strength of MEDE are studied at solar maximum (2002) and long deep solar minimum (2009), and latitude-longitude dependence is examined using the data in 2002-2009. The results show that the MEDE occurs at all times of the day though pronounced at night (2200-0400LT), and in some cases the daytime occurrence could be more frequent than the corresponding nighttime occurrence. The strength maximizes at around 0400LT and is weak during daytime. Both the occurrence and strength are, in general, predominant in winter at low solar activity and exhibit significant longitudinal dependence. The ExB drift, strength, and direction of neutral wind and ionosphere-plasmasphere plasma flow and their day-to-day variations are suggested to account for the existence of MEDE at all times of the day.

ResumoMagnetopause shadowing and wave-particle interactions are recognized as the two primary mechanisms for losses of electrons from the outer radiation belt. We investigate these mechanisms, using satellite observations both in interplanetary space and within the magnetosphere and particle drift modeling. Two interplanetary shocks/sheaths impinged upon the magnetopause causing a relativistic electron flux dropout. The magnetic cloud (MC) and interplanetary structure sunward of the MC had primarily northward magnetic field, perhaps leading to a concomitant lack of substorm activity and a 10 daylong quiescent period. The arrival of two shocks caused an unusual electron flux dropout. Test-particle simulations have shown ∼ 2 to 5 MeV energy, equatorially mirroring electrons with initial values of L≥5.5 can be lost to the magnetosheath via magnetopause shadowing alone. For electron losses at lower L-shells, coherent chorus wave-driven pitch angle scattering and ULF wave-driven radial transport have been shown to be viable mechanisms.

ResumoConvective instabilities of viscous conducting fluids play an important role in many physical phenomena in planets and stars. Astrophysical magnetic fields are usually explained in a framework of the dynamo theory, describing transformation of the kinetic energy of a flow into magnetic energy. Therefore, an analysis of purely convective states and their bifurcations, as a control parameter is changed, provides a detailed framework for the subsequent study of magnetic field generation by these states. In this paper, three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in the absence of magnetic field is investigated numerically for various values of the Rayleigh number and a fixed Prandtl number (corresponding to its value for convection in the Earth's outer core). On increasing the Rayleigh number, we identified periodic, quasiperiodic, chaotic and hyperchaotic attractors of the convective system and their bifurcations, thereby describing a route to spatiotemporal chaos in the convective system. The occurrence of on-off intermittency in the energy time series is discussed.

ResumoThe routine to determine the local cloud cover (LCC) drawn from sky images obtained using a ground-based automatic imager is validated. Almost 3 years of daily data of LCC and cloud cover measurements by ground-based human observation (CCHO) were compared for two Brazilian stations set 6km apart. The linear fitting between daily values showed a co-efficient of determination (r(2)) and a percent scattering of points (SD%) of approximate to 0.77 and approximate to 19.4% respectively. These results are evidence for the significant similarity between the two sets of data. On the other hand, the level of difference found can be explained by the fact that (1) the data refer to independent micro-scale observations of the sky from stations set a few kilometres apart and (2) the data were drawn from interpretations of cloud cover by an automatic imager and a human observer. The monthly average values of LCC and CCHO showed better linear fitting parameters r(2)=0.95 and SD%=6.3%. Average differences of approximate to-10% from LCC to CCHO were found. These average differences may reflect a systematic bias between the two processes of measuring cloud cover.
