ResumoIn mid-2012, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) released version 4.3 of the Regional Climate Model (RegCM4.3). This version includes a new surface scheme, the Common Land Model (CLM); a new planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme, the University of Washington PBL (UW-PBL); and new convection schemes including Tiedtke, and Mixed1 and Mixed2-with Grell (MIT) over the land and MIT (Grell) over the ocean for Mixed1 (Mixed2). These implementations suggest the necessity of an evaluation study to determine the best configuration of RegCM4.3 for simulating the climate of South America (SA). The main motivation is to come up with the best configurations of RegCM4.3 over the SA domain for use in the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) project. We analyzed 7 simulations for the period 1990-2000. The control simulation used the Biosphere Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS), Holtslag for the PBL and Mixed1 for cumulus convection. In the other simulations we changed these schemes using the new RegCM4.3 options. The evaluation of the simulations was carried out in 3 groups: (1) sensitivity to convection (Mixed1, MIT and Tiedtke), (2) sensitivity to the PBL (Holtslag and UW-PBL) and (3) sensitivity to surface processes (BATS and CLM). Considering all of SA, the results show that precipitation is better simulated with the schemes of the control simulation, while for air temperature, better results were obtained using the MIT cumulus scheme together with the CLM scheme. In summary, we recommend 2 configurations for the CORDEX project over SA: (1) the schemes used in the control simulation and (2) the MIT scheme for cumulus convection, Holtslag for the PBL, and CLM for surface interaction processes.

ResumoAn investigation of how stationary Rossby wave (SRW) propagation can change in response to the A2 climate change scenario is made using six coupled ocean-atmosphere general-circulation models (OAGCM). The simulation results for the present-day climate (1960-1990) are compared with the NCEP/NCAR and ECMWF ERA-40 re-analyses. The zonal wind, the SRW kinetic energy (KE) pattern along the waveguide and the stationary wave-number are used to analyse the changes in the SRW propagation for the winter season of each hemisphere. The main result shows that in future climate (2069-2099) the SRW propagation for longer distances is unfavourable for the main waveguides in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH), which is confirmed through the SRW KE decrease. A poleward shift of the subtropical jet stream in future climate is also shown by five models in the SH and by three in the NH.

ResumoBrazilian electric power is mostly based on hydraulics sources through hydropower plant reservoirs that are fed by rivers located in Southeast Brazil. Possible changes in climate can affect the energy supply of the country. The objective of this work is to assess the possible changes in the hydrology of the Upper Grande River Basin (UGRB) under a future climate change scenario, using the Lavras Simulation of Hydrology (LASH) model forced by the outputs of the Eta model, a regional climate model, which was driven by HadCM3 A1B scenario for three time slices in the period between 2011 and 2099. Owing to the surface heterogeneity of the region, the hydrologic model was previously calibrated for four watersheds of the UGRB, which are located in its headwater region and evaluated against observational time series of the present climate period, 19611990. In the first future time slice, 20112040, the results showed a small reduction in the annual run-off, but for the other time slices, the trend changed to strong increase in most of the watersheds. The water budget in the region calculated from the Eta model agreed with the run-off trends, as water excess reduced in the first time slice and gradually increased towards the end of the century. The run-off components showed intraseasonal variability. The reduction of rains in the end of winter, the dry period in the region, and in the beginning of spring, may cause a change in the dynamics of the groundwater recharge, affecting the base flow, which can extend and intensify the flow recession period, and therefore affect the availability of water resources. On the other hand, the increase of rains during the summer, the rainy season of the region, caused an increase of the direct surface run-off, which can modify the flood regimes of the rivers in the region.

ResumoThe Regional Carbon Balance in Amazonia (BARCA) campaign provided the first Amazon Basin-wide aircraft measurements of O3 during both the dry-to-wet (November and December 2008) and wet-to-dry (May 2009) transition seasons. Extremely low background values (<20 ppb) were observed to the west and north of Manaus in both seasons and in all regions during the wet-to-dry transition. On the other hand, elevated O3 levels (4060 ppb) were seen during the dry-to-wet transition to the east and south of Manaus, where biomass burning emissions of O3 precursors were present. Chemistry simulations with the CCATT-BRAMS and WRF-Chem models are within the error bars of the observed O3 profiles in the boundary layer (03 km a.s.l.) in polluted conditions. However, the models overestimate O3 in the boundary layer in clean conditions, despite lacking the predominant NO source from soil. In addition, O3 simulated by the models was either within the error bars or lower than BARCA observations in mid-levels (35 km a.s.l.), indicating that the models do not represent the free troposphere boundary layer gradient in O3. Total tropospheric O3 retrieved from OMI/MLS was higher than that simulated by the models, suggesting that the satellite observations are dominated by the middle troposphere and long-range processes and are not a~good indication of O3 conditions in the PBL. Additional simulations with WRF-Chem showed that the model O3 production is very sensitive to both the O3 deposition velocities, which were about one half of observed values, and the NOx emissions. These results have implications for the monitoring and prediction of increases in O3 production in the Amazon Basin as the regional population grows.

ResumoA convective parameterization is described and evaluated that may be used in high resolution non-hydrostatic mesoscale models as well as in modeling system with unstructured varying grid resolutions and for convection aware simulations. This scheme is based on a stochastic approach originally implemented by Grell and Devenyi (2002). Two approaches are tested on resolutions ranging from 20 km to 5 km. One approach is based on spreading subsidence to neighboring grid points, the other one on a recently introduced method by Arakawa et al. (2011). Results from model intercomparisons, as well as verification with observations indicate that both the spreading of the subsidence and Arakawas approach work well for the highest resolution runs. Because of its simplicity and its capability for an automatic smooth transition as the resolution is increased, Arakawas approach may be preferred. Additionally, interactions with aerosols have been implemented through a cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) dependent autoconversion of cloud water to rain as well as an aerosol dependent evaporation of cloud drops. Initial tests with this newly implemented aerosol approach show plausible results with a decrease in predicted precipitation in some areas, caused by the changed autoconversion mechanism. This change also causes a significant increase of cloud water and ice detrainment near the cloud tops. ResumoThis study is based on climatological records (19792008) of cold outbreak (friagem) events that occurred in the southern Amazon region during the austral winter months (May to September). The friagem events were identified with an objective method that used climatological data from the surface station of the Department of Airspace Control (DCEA) in Vilhena city, including the minimum temperature (Tmin), the pressure reduced to mean sea level (Pmsl) and the decrease in Tmin (DTmin). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between atmospheric circulation and friagem events using Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) and a composite method. One hundred and forty-four friagem events were identified with the proposed methodology. These events produced large changes in weather conditions in Amazonia, including an abrupt decrease in air temperature, an increase in the amount of dry air, and an increase in surface pressure. The main atmospheric features associated with friagem events are an intensification of high post-frontal surface pressure that is caused by the intensification of a ridge at middle and high levels when air approaches the Andes and strong southerly winds at the surface that carry cold, dry air to tropical latitudes.

ResumoWe studied the interannual variability of the beginning, end and duration of South American monsoon system (SAMS) for the period 1956-2006. The mean beginning date was 10 October, whereas the mean end date was 6 April, and the mean duration was 174days. The beginning of SAMS showed a tendency to start earlier and the end date showed a tendency to delay; thus, the duration of SAMS showed a tendency to increase by about 7days in 10years. We found that the beginning and end dates of SAMS have significant positive correlation with sea surface temperature (SST) of an earlier period at southwest Africa in the South Atlantic Ocean. This suggests the potential of SST in the prediction of the beginning and end dates of SAMS.

ResumoDuring approximately 80% of its growing season, lowland flooded irrigated rice ecosystems in southern Brazil are kept within a 5-10-cm water layer. These anaerobic conditions have an influence on the partitioning of the energy and water balance components. Furthermore, this cropping system differs substantially from any other upland nonirrigated or irrigated crop ecosystems. In this study, daily, seasonal, and annual dynamics of the energy and water balance components were analyzed over a paddy rice farm in a subtropical location in southern Brazil using eddy covariance measurements. In this region, rice is grown once a year in low wetlands while the ground is kept fallow during the remaining of the year. Results show that the energy budget residual corresponded to up to 20% of the net radiation during the rice-growing season and around 10% for the remainder of the year (fallow). The energy and water balance analysis also showed that because of the high water table in the region, soil was near saturation most of the time, and latent heat flux dominated over sensible heat flux by up to one order of magnitude in some cases. The estimate of evapotranspiration ET using the crop coefficient multiplied by the reference evapotranspiration KcETo and the Penman-Monteith equation ETPM, describing the canopy resistance through leaf area index (LAI) obtained by remote sensing, represent well the measured evapotranspiration, mainly in the fallow periods. Therefore, using a specific crop parameter like LAI and crop height can be an easy and interesting alternative to estimate ET in vegetated lowland areas.

ResumoThe fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) has been measured underway during three quasi-synoptic cruises in the western tropical Atlantic in March/April 2009 and July/August 2010 in the region 6°S-15°N, 52°W-24°W. The distribution of fCO2 is related to the main features of the ocean circulation. Temperature exerts a dominant control on the distribution of fCO2 in March/April whereas salinity plays an important role in July/August due to the more developed North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) carrying Amazon water and to the high precipitation associated with the presence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The main surface currents are characterized by different fCO2. Overall, the NECC carries less saline waters with lower fCO2 compared to the South Equatorial Current (SEC). The North Equatorial Current (NEC) is usually characterized by CO2 undersaturation in winter and supersaturation in summer. Using empirical fCO2-SST-SSS relationships, two seasonal maps of fCO2 are constructed for March 2009 and July 2010. The region is a sink of CO2 of 0.40 mmol m-2d-1 in March, explained by the winter cooling in the northern hemisphere, whereas it is a source of CO2 of 1.32 mmol m-2d-1 in July. The equatorial region is a source of CO2 throughout the year due to the upwelling supplying CO2-rich waters to the surface. However, the evolution of fCO2 over time, determined from all the available cruises in a small area, 1°S-1°N, 32°W-28°W, suggests that the source of CO2 has decreased in February-March from 1983 to 2011 or has remained constant in October-November from 1991 to 2010.

ResumoMeteorological application of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data over Brazil has increased significantly in recent years, motivated by the significant amount of investment from research agencies. Several projects have, among their principal objectives, the monitoring of humidity over Brazilian territory. These research projects require integrated water vapor (IWV) values with maximum quality, and, accordingly, appropriate data from the installed meteorological stations, together with the GNSS antennas, have been used. The model that is applied to estimate the water-vapor-weighted mean tropospheric temperature (Tm) is a source of uncertainty in the estimate of IWV values using the ground-based GNSS receivers in Brazil. Two global models and one algorithm for Tm, developed through the use of radiosondes, numerical weather prediction products, and 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40), as well as two regional models, were evaluated using a dataset of ;78 000 radiosonde profiles collected at 22 stations in Brazil during a 12-yr period (1999-2010). The regional models (denoted the Brazilian and regional models) were developed with the use of multivariate statistical analysis using ~90 000 radiosonde profiles launched at 12 stations over a 32-yr period (1961-93). The main conclusion is that the Brazilian model and two global models exhibit similar performance if the complete dataset and the entire period are taken into consideration. However, for seasonal and local variations of the Tm values, the Brazilian model was better than the other two models for most stations. The Tm values from ERA-40 present no bias, but their scatter is larger than that in the other models. © 2014 American Meteorological Society.
