ResumoAmong different applications using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, land cover classification of rain forest areas has been investigated. Previous results showed that L-band is more appropriate for such applications. However, SAR images have limited discriminability for mapping large sets of classes compared with optical imagery. The objective of this study was to carry out an analysis about the discriminative capability of an L-band fully polarimetric SAR complex image, compared to the possible subsets of polarizations in amplitude/intensity, for mapping land cover classes in Amazon regions. Two case studies using ALOS PALSAR L-band fully polarimetric images over Brazilian Amazon regions were considered. Several thematic classes, organized into scenarios, were considered for each case study. These scenarios represent distinct classification tasks with variated complexities. Performing a simultaneous analysis of different scenarios is a distinct way to assess the discriminative capability offered by a particular image. A methodology to organize thematic classes into scenarios is proposed in this study. The maximum likelihood classifier (MLC), with specific distributions for SAR data, and support vector machine were considered in this study. The iterated conditional modes algorithm was adopted to incorporate the contextual information in both methods. Considering a kappa coefficient equal to 0.8 as an acceptable minimum, the experiments show that none subset of polarization or fully polarimetric image allows performing discrimination between forest and regeneration types; single-polarized HV data provide acceptable results when the classification problem deals with the discrimination of a few classes; depending on the classification scenario, the dual-polarized HH+HV image produces similar results when compared to multipolarized (i.e., HH+HV+VV) data; in turn, if the MLC method is adopted, multipolarized data may produce close or statistically indifferent classification results compared to those produced with the use of fully polarimetric data.

TítuloParametrization and calibration of a quasi-analytical algorithm for tropical eutrophic waters

ResumoQuasi-analytical algorithm (QAA) was designed to derive the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of water bodies from above-surface remote sensing reflectance (Rrs). Several variants of QAA have been developed for environments with different bio-optical characteristics. However, most variants of QAA suffer from moderate to high negative IOP prediction when applied to tropical eutrophic waters. This research is aimed at parametrizing a QAA for tropical eutrophic water dominated by cyanobacteria. The alterations proposed in the algorithm yielded accurate absorption coefficients and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration. The main changes accomplished were the selection of wavelengths representative of the optically relevant constituents (ORCs) and calibration of values directly associated with the pigments and detritus plus colored dissolved organic material (CDM) absorption coefficients. The re-parametrized QAA eliminated the retrieval of negative values, commonly identified in other variants of QAA. The calibrated model generated a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 21.88% and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 28.27% for at(λ), where the largest errors were found at 412 nm and 620 nm. Estimated NRMSE for aCDM(λ) was 18.86% with a MAPE of 31.17%. A NRMSE of 22.94% and a MAPE of 60.08% were obtained for aφ(λ). Estimated aφ(665) and aφ(709) was used to predict Chl-a concentration. aφ(665) derived from QAA for Barra Bonita Hydroelectric Reservoir (QAA_BBHR) was able to predict Chl-a accurately, with a NRMSE of 11.3% and MAPE of 38.5%. The performance of the Chl-a model was comparable to some of the most widely used empirical algorithms such as 2-band, 3-band, and the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI). The new QAA was parametrized based on the band configuration of MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), Sentinel-2A and 3A and can be readily scaled-up for spatio-temporal monitoring of IOPs in tropical waters.

ResumoAdvances in geotechnologies and in remote sensing have improved analysis of urban environments. The new sensors are increasingly suited to urban studies, due to the enhancement in spatial, spectral and radiometric resolutions. Urban environments present high heterogeneity, which cannot be tackled using pixel-based approaches on high resolution images. Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) has been consolidated as a methodology for urban land use and cover monitoring; however, classification of high resolution images is still troublesome. This study aims to assess the improvement on ceramic roof classification using WorldView-2 images due to the increase of 4 new bands besides the standard "Blue-Green-Red-Near Infrared" bands. Our methodology combines GEOBIA, C4.5 classification tree algorithm, Monte Carlo simulation and statistical tests for classification accuracy. Two samples groups were considered: 1) eight multispectral and panchromatic bands, and 2) four multispectral and panchromatic bands, representing previous high-resolution sensors. The C4.5 algorithm generates a decision tree that can be used for classification; smaller decision trees are closer to the semantic networks produced by experts on GEOBIA, while bigger trees, are not straightforward to implement manually, but are more accurate. The choice for a big or small tree relies on the user's skills to implement it. This study aims to determine for what kind of user the addition of the 4 new bands might be beneficial: 1) the common user (smaller trees) or 2) a more skilled user with coding and/or data mining abilities (bigger trees). In overall the classification was improved by the addition of the four new bands for both types of users.

ResumoLandsat 8 is the first Earth observation satellite with sufficient radiometric and spatial resolution to allow global mapping of lake CDOM and DOC (coloured dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic carbon, respectively) content. Landsat 8 is a multispectral sensor however, the number of potentially usable band ratios, or more sophisticated indices, is limited. In order to test the suitability of the ratio most commonly used in lake carbon content mapping, the green-red band ratio, we carried out fieldwork in Estonian and Brazilian lakes. Several atmospheric correction methods were also tested in order to use image data where the image-to-image variability due to illumination conditions would be minimal. None of the four atmospheric correction methods tested, produced reflectance spectra that matched well with in situ measured reflectance. Nevertheless, the green-red band ratio calculated from the reflectance data was in correlation with measured CDOM values. In situ data show that there is a strong correlation between CDOM and DOC concentrations in Estonian and Brazilian lakes. Thus, mapping the global CDOM and DOC content from Landsat 8 is plausible but more data from different parts of the world are needed before decisions can be made about the accuracy of such global estimation.

ResumoThis work presents an investigation to determine ground deformation based on an integration of DInSAR Time-Series (DTS) and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) techniques aiming at detecting high rates of linear and non-linear ground movement. The combined techniques were applied in an open pit iron mine located in Carajás Mineral Province (Brazilian Amazon region), using a set of 33 TerraSAR-X-1 images acquired from March 2012 to April 2013 when, due to a different deformation behavior during the dry and wet seasons in the Amazon region, a non-linear deformation was detected. The DTS analysis was performed on a stack of multi-look unwrapped interferograms using an extension of the SVD (Singular Value Decomposition), where a set of additional weighted constraints on the acceleration of the displacement was incorporated to control the smoothness of the time-series solutions, whose objective was to correct the atmospheric phase artifacts. The height errors and the deformation history provided by the DTS technique were used as previous information to perform the PSI analysis. This procedure improved the capability of the PSI technique to detect non-linear movement as well as to increase the numbers of point density of the final results. The results of the combined techniques are presented and compared with total station/prisms and ground-based radar (GBR) measurements.

ResumoThe multiple uses of land-cover models have led to validation with choice metrics or an ad hoc choice of the validation metrics available. To address this, we have identified the major dimensions of land-cover maps that ought to be evaluated and devised a Similarity Validation (SimiVal) tool. SimiVal uses a linear regression to test a modelled projection against benchmark cases of, perfect, observed and systematic-bias, calculated by rescaling the metrics from a random case relative to the observed, perfect case. The most informative regression coefficients, p-value and slope, are plot on a ternary graph of 'similarity space' whose extremes are the three benchmark cases. SimiVal is tested on projections of two deliberately contrasting land-cover models to show the similarity between intra- and inter-model parameterisations. We find metrics of landscape structure are important in distinguishing between different projections of the same model. Predictive and exploratory models can benefit from the tool.

ResumoThis work aims to verify the applicability of models obtained using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for estimation of biophysical Eucalyptus saligna parameters [diameter of breast height (DBH), total height and volume], as a method of continuous forest inventory. In order to obtain different digital elevation models, and the interferometric height (Hint) to retrieve the tree heights, SAR surveying was carried out by an airborne interferometric SAR in two frequencies X and P bands. The study area, located in the Brazilian southeast region (S 22°53′22″/W 45°26′16″ and S 22°53′22″/W 45°26′16″), comprises 128.64 hectares of Eucalyptus saligna stands. The methodological procedures encompassed: forest inventory, topographic surveying, radar mapping, radar processing, and multivariable regression techniques to build Eucalyptus volume, DBH, and height models. The statistical regression pointed out Hint and interferometric coherence as the most important variables for the total height and DBH estimation; for the volume model, however, only the Hint variable was selected. The performance of the biophysical models from the second campaign, two years later (2006), were consistent and its results are very promising for updating annual inventories needed for managing Eucalyptus plantations.

ResumoA recent alternative to standard pixel-based classification of remote-sensing data is region-based classification, which has proved to be particularly useful when analysing high-resolution imagery of complex environments, such as urban areas, or when addressing noisy data, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. First, following certain criteria, the imagery is decomposed into homogeneous regions, and then each region is classified into a class of interest. The usual method for region-based classification involves using stochastic distances, which measure the distances between the pixel distributions inside an unknown region and the representative distributions of each class. The class, which is at the minimum distance from the unknown region distribution, is assigned to the region and this procedure is termed stochastic minimum distance classification (SMDC). This study reports the use of methods derived from the original SMDC, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and graph theory, with the objective of identifying the most robust and accurate classification methods. The equivalent pixel-based versions of region-based analysed methods were included for comparison. A case study near the Tapajós National Forest, in Pará state, Brazil, was investigated using ALOS PALSAR data. This study showed that methods based on the nearest neighbour, derived from SMDC, and SVM, with a specific kernel function, are more accurate and robust than the other analysed methods for region-based classification. Furthermore, pixel-based methods are not indicated to perform the classification of images with a strong presence of noise, such as SAR images.

ResumoSupport vector machine (SVM) has been receiving a great deal of attention for remote sensing data classification. Although the original formulation of this method does not incorporate contextual information, lately different formulations have been proposed to incorporate such information, with the aim of improving the mapping accuracy. In general, these proposals modify the SVM training phase or integrate the SVM classifications in stochastic models. Recently, two new contextual versions of SVM, context adaptive and competitive translative SVM (CaSVM and CtSVM, respectively), were proposed in literature. In this work, two case studies of urban area classification, using IKONOS-II and hyperspectral digital imagery collection experiment (HYDICE) data sets were conducted to compare SVM, SVM integrated with the iterated conditional modes (ICM) stochastic algorithm, SVM smoothed using the mode filter and the recent approaches CaSVM and CtSVM. The results indicated that although it possesses a high computational cost, the CaSVM method was able to produce classification results with similar accuracy (using kappa coefficient) to those obtained using SVM integrated with ICM (SVM+ICM) and the mode filter (SVM+Mode), all of them found statistically superior to the SVM result at 95% confidence level for the IKONOS-II image. For HYDICE image, all results were found statistically insignificant at 95% confidence level. Investigation of what happens at transition regions between classes, however, showed that some methods can present superior performance. To this objective, a new performance measure, called upsilon coefficient, was introduced in this work, which measures the impact that the smoothing effect, typical of contextual methods, can have in distorting the edges between regions. With this new measure was found that CaSVM is the one which has better performance followed with SVM+ICM.

ResumoMapping cropland distribution over large areas has attracted great attention in recent years, however, traditional pixel-based classification approaches produce high uncertainty in cropland area statistics. This study proposes a new approach to map fractional cropland distribution in Mato Grosso, Brazil using time series MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data. The major steps include: (1) remove noise and clouds/shadows contamination using the Savizky-Gloay filter and temporal resampling algorithm based on the time series MODIS EVI data; (2) identify the best periods to extract croplands through crop phenology analysis; (3) develop a seasonal dynamic index (SDI) from the time series MODIS EVI data based on three key stages: sowing, growing, and harvest; and (4) develop a regression model to estimate cropland fraction based on the relationship between SDI and Landsat-derived fractional cropland data. The root mean squared error of 0.14 was obtained based on the analysis of randomly selected 500 sample plots. This research shows that the proposed approach is promising for rapidly mapping fractional cropland distribution in Mato Grosso, Brazil.
