ResumoThe purpose of this study is to present statistics related to the integration of cloud and rain liquid water and the profiles for different cloud types and regimes. From 2010 to 2012, the CHUVA project collected information regarding cloud and rain characteristics in different precipitation regimes in Brazil. CHUVA had four field campaigns between 2010 and 2011, located in the North, Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil, covering the semi-arid, Amazon, coastal and mountain regions. The synergy of several instruments allowed us to classify rain events and describe the cloud processes regionally. Microwave radiometers, LiDAR, radar, and disdrometers were employed in this study. The rain type classification was made using vertical profiles of reflectivity (VPR) and polarimetric variables from dual polarization radar (XPOL). The integrated liquid water (ILWC) for non-precipitating clouds was retrieved with a microwave ground-based radiometer using a neural network. For rainy conditions, the profiles from the rain liquid water content (LWCR) and their integrated (ILWR) properties were estimated by Micro Rain Radar (MRR) and XPOL VPRs. For non-precipitating clouds, the ILWC values were larger for the sites in tropical regions, in particular near the coast, than for Southeast Brazil. For rainy cases, distinct LWCR profiles were observed for different rain classifications and regions. The differences are small for low rain rates and a distinction between different rainfall regimes is more evident for high rain rates. Vale and Belém clouds present the deepest layers and largest convective rain rates. The clouds in the Southeast region of Brazil (Vale do Paraíba) and North region (Belém) showed the largest reflectivity in the mixed and glaciated layers, respectively. In contrast, the Northeast coastal site (e.g. Fortaleza) showed larger values in the warm part of the clouds. Several analyses are presented, describing the cloud processes and the differences among the cloud types, rain rates and regions.

ResumoWe propose a pump-probe differential Lidar technique to remotely map the ability of the atmosphere to undergo particle condensation, which depends on the concentration of both pre-existing nanoparticles and condensable species or their precursors. Besides its interest for improving short-time, local weather forecast, this technique could provide information on atmospheric parameters such as the concentration of condensable species and physical parameters including the temperature and relative humidity.

ResumoSeveral remote sensing studies have adopted the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method for image classification. Although the original formulation of the SVM method does not incorporate contextual information, there are different proposals to incorporate this type of information into it. Usually, these proposals modify the SVM training phase or make an integration of SVM classifications using stochastic models. This study presents a new perspective on the development of contextual SVMs. The main concept of this proposed method is to use the contextual information to displace the separation hyperplane, initially defined by the traditional SVM. This displaced hyperplane could cause a change of the class initially assigned to the pixel. To evaluate the classification effectiveness of the proposed method a case study is presented comparing the results with the standard SVM and the SVM post-processed by the mode (majority) filter. An ALOS/PALSAR image, PLR mode, acquired over an Amazon area was used in the experiment. Considering the inner area of test sites, the accuracy results obtained by the proposed method is better than SVM and similar to SVM post-processed by the mode filter. The proposed method, however, produces better results than mode post-processed SVM when considering the classification near the edges between regions. One drawback of the method is the computational cost of the proposed method is significantly greater than the compared methods.

ResumoKnowledge of deep convective system cloud processes and dynamic structures is a key feature in climate change and nowcasting. However, the horizontal inner structures at the cloud tops of deep convective systems are not well understood due to lack of measurements and the complex processes linked to dynamics and thermodynamics. This study describes a new technique to extract inner cloud-top dynamics using brightness temperature differences. This new information could help clarify ring and U or V shape structures in deep convection and be potentially useful in nowcasting applications. Indeed, the use of high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, which now include explicit microphysical processes, requires data assimilation at very high resolution as well. A standard atmospheric motion vector tracking algorithm was applied to a pair of images composed of combinations of Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infra-red Imager (SEVIRI) channels. Several ranges of channel differences were used in the tracking process, such intervals being expected to correspond to specific cloud-top microphysics structures. Various consistent flows of motion vectors with different speeds and/or directions were extracted at the same location depending on the channel difference intervals used. These differences in speed/direction can illustrate local wind shear situations, or correspond to expansion or dissipation of cloud regions that contain high concentrations of specific kinds of ice crystals or droplets. The results from this technique were compared to models and ancillary data to advance our discussion and inter-comparisons. Also, the technique proposed here was evaluated using SEVIRI images simulated by the radiative transfer model RTTOV with input data from the UK Met Office Unified Model. A future application of the new data is exemplified by showing the relationship between wind divergence calculated from the new atmospheric motion vector and convective cloud top intensification.

ResumoAdvances in computer power have made it possible to increase the spatial resolution of regional numerical models to a scale encompassing larger convective elements of less than 5 km in size. One goal of high resolution is to begin to resolve convective processes, and therefore it is necessary to evaluate the realism of convective clouds resolved explicitly at this resolution. This paper presents a method that is based on satellite comparisons to examine the simulation of continental tropical convection over Africa, in a high-resolution integration of the Met Office Unified Model (UK UM), developed under the Cascade project. The spatial resolution of these simulations is 1.5 km, the temporal resolution is 15 min, and the convection is resolved explicitly. The Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) radiometer measurements were simulated by the Radiative Transfer for the Television and Infrared Observation Satellite (TIROS) Operational Vertical Sounder (RTTOV) model, and then a comparison between the simulations and real SEVIRI measurements was performed. The analysis using the presented method shows that the UK UM can represent tropical convection dynamics realistically. However, an error has been found in the high-level humidity distribution, which is characterized by strong humidity gradients. A key point of this paper is to present a method for establishing the credibility of a convection-permitting model by direct comparison with satellite data.

ResumoA procedure is presented that allows using information from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor to improve the quality of emissivity maps for the Meteosat Second Generation/Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) currently in use as input to a generalized split window (SW) algorithm for land-surface temperature (LST) retrievals in the operational chain of the Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (LSA SAF). Information from MODIS is incorporated by means of linear regression models expressing emissivity in SEVIRI thermal-infrared channels as a linear combination of emissivities in MODIS bands. The linear models are applied to the MODIS emissivity product MOD11C3, and a comparison is performed with the operational LSA-SAF product. Special attention is devoted to the semiarid and arid regions of North Africa where emissivity is highly variable. When compared with the new emissivity maps, the LSA-SAF product displays more uniform emissivity values over these regions, leading to higher retrievals for all channels (bias around 0.03) except for IR3.9 (bias from -0.05 to -0.08). The root-mean-square error (RMSE) varies from 0.06 to 0.09 (0.02 to 0.03) for IR3.9 (IR10.8 and IR12.0) and is about 0.06 for IR8.7. The impact on LST is assessed by comparing the retrievals from a SW algorithm using as input the following: 1) the SEVIRI emissivity LSA-SAF product and 2) SEVIRI emissivity maps from MOD11C3. The uncertainty in the LSA-SAF emissivity product results into LST values with bias ranging from -0.4 to -1.0 K and RMSE around 1.6 K. The new emissivity maps based on MODIS data may be an alternative to the standard LSA-SAF emissivity product over semiarid and arid areas, which cover 26% of the land surfaces within the SEVIRI full disk. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

ResumoThe diurnal variation of precipitation at four stations in and around Manaus (03◦S, 60◦W) is studied using hourly observations for the period 20062011. The rainfall at midforest stations is 20% greater than that at the city stations, especially in the afternoon hours. The frequency of rain events varies substantially with the hour of the day, but the mean intensity of rain events does not. Daytime [0618 local time (LT)] frequency is more than two times the nighttime (1905 LT) frequency. The hours with highest frequency are 1217 LT. The wet season November through May (NDJFMAM) frequency is approximately three times that of the dry season June through October (JJASO) frequency at all hours and at all stations. The diurnal frequency peak in the afternoon is more pronounced at the forest stations than at city stations. For smaller intensities of hourly rainfall the afternoon peaks are very pronounced while larger intensities of rainfall (15mmh−1 and above) do not show preference for any hour of the day. Higher rainfall totals in the rainy season are due to more frequent rainfall rather than higher intensities of the rain events. Higher frequencies in the early morning hours close to the river are possibly due to the river breeze effect.
