AbstractCarbon nanofibers were synthesized on graphite felt substrate by catalytic decomposition of ethane. The preshaped material was efficiently used as catalyst support for the active phase NiS2 in the direct oxidation of H2S into elemental sulfur. The catalyst was extremely active, selective, and stable at 60 degrees C in a fixed bed reactor due to the high resistance of carbon nanofiber based catalyst to the solid sulfur loading. This is explained by the specific mode of sulfur deposition, involving the role of water in the sulfur transport and the hydrophobic nature of the support.

Amazon forest fires
AbstractParticle size distribution from forest biomass combustion is an important parameter as it affects air quality, global climate and human health. There have been several studies that relate emission of 2.5-10 ìm particulates and their effects on human health. The objective of this study was to sample particulates smaller than 2.5 ìm from Amazon forest biomass burning in laboratory and field experiments. Sampling was carried out using three instruments: two DataRAM 4 (model DR 4000) and a Cascade Impactor. Isokinetic probes were used for sampling in the stacks, and an omnidirectional instrument was used for field sampling. The field experiment was conducted in a 4 ha Amazon forest test site in the state of Acre, in Brazil. Ignition, flaming and smoldering combustion phases were analyzed. Results were obtained in terms of particle size distribution and concentration. Comparison of laboratory and field experiments showed that particle size distributions were similar in both cases. Particle sizes obtained in the laboratory ranged from 0.05 to 0.8 ìm; in the field experiment, sizes varied from 0.03 to 0.3 ìm. Average concentrations in the laboratory and in the field were 185 mg m-3 and 350 mg m-3, respectively. It is important to emphasize that those results were obtained throughout the burning process and the diameters sampled were smaller than 2.5 um.

AbstractCone and cylinder calorimeters are devices used to determine flammability characteristics of solid materials under prescribed heat inputs. Temperature and heat input distribution on the exposed surface of a specimen in a calorimeter can be affected by variations of position or size of the specimen. This work analyzes the thermal radiation view factors of slabs and cylinders tested in cone and cylinder calorimeters, respectively. Blackbody radiation thermal interchange is assumed and reflections of neighbor objects are not considered. Uniformity of view factor distributions and total view factors are compared for slabs and cylinders tested in calorimeters, considering positioning and size variations.

AbstractSystematic conductivity measurements in granular R1-xCexBa2Cu3O7-delta (R = Y, Er, Ho and Gd) superconductors are presented. The focus is the role of the cerium ion on the superconductor-normal transition. The results showed that the resistive transition proceeds in two stages, intragranular and intergranular, as seen by the temperature derivative of the resistivity near T-C. Therefore, from the critical exponent analysis, we have also observed two close and sharp genuine superconducting transitions in all samples investigated. Two critical temperatures were identified, but only one is strongly affected by Ce doping. The splitting of the pairing transition was associated with Ce and related to the occurrence of a phase separation. R1-xCexBa2Cu3O7-delta can be regarded as a mixed crystalline solid solution consisting of two crystal unit cells: R-123 (R cell) and Ce-123 (Ce cell), where a two-dimensional (2D) site-percolation structure is built along the ab plane. The ionic size effect of rare earth element R on the superconductor-normal transition has been investigated and it was observed that the temperature splitting Delta varies between approximately 4.2 K for Ho to 12.1 K for Gd.

AbstractIn the present work, the features of liquid evaporation inside a low-porosity medium subjected to an impinging stream of hot gas is investigated analytically. The flow is analysed for a non-Darcy model, in which viscous and convective terms are considered in the Darcy pressure equation. A low-volatility liquid is considered, so that a low-vaporization regime is established. The rates of heat transfer between gas and solid and between liquid and solid are assumed to be high. Owing to differences between phase properties, in the system under study, different physical processes occur at different length scales. Using asymptotic expansions, expressions for the three phases that occur in this problem are obtained, in each of their length scales. The results predict that high injection temperatures are needed for phase change to occur, as a result of the low volatility of the liquid. Likewise, the enhancement of the vaporization rate due to heat conduction in the porous medium is quantified. The Hiemenz flow pressure term is modified to incorporate the effect of the porous medium, which is necessary for a solution to be found.
