ResumoTwo different types of typical Brazilian forest biomass were burned in the laboratory in order to compare their combustion characteristics and pollutant emissions. Approximately 2kg of Amazon biomass (hardwood) and 2kg of Araucaria biomass (softwood) were burned. Gaseous emissions of CO2, CO, and NOx and particulate matter smaller than 2.5¼m (PM2.5) were evaluated in the flaming and smoldering combustion phases. Temperature, burn rate, modified combustion efficiency, emissions factor, and particle diameter and concentration were studied. A continuous analyzer was used to quantify gas concentrations. A DataRam4 and a Cascade Impactor were used to sample PM2.5. Araucaria biomass (softwood) had a lignin content of 34.9%, higher than the 23.3% of the Amazon biomass (hardwood). CO2 and CO emissions factors seem to be influenced by lignin content. Maximum concentrations of CO2, NOx and PM2.5 were observed in the flaming phase.

ResumoForest ecosystems are a sink of atmospheric mercury, trapping the metal in the canopy, and storing it in the forest floor after litter fall. Fire liberates a portion of this mercury; however, little is known about the long-term release of mercury post deforestation. We conducted two large-scale experiments to study this phenomenon. In upstate New York, gaseous mercury emissions from soil were monitored continually using a Teflon dynamic surface flux chamber for two-weeks before and after cutting of the canopy on the edge of a deciduous forest. In Brazil, gaseous mercury emissions from soil were monitored in an intact Ombrophilous Open forest and an adjacent field site both before and after the field site was cleared by burning. In the intact forest, gaseous mercury emissions from soil averaged-0.73±1.84ngm-2h-1 (24-h monitoring) at the New York site, and 0.33±0.09ngm-2h-1 (daytime-only) at the Brazil site. After deforestation, gaseous mercury emissions from soil averaged 9.13±2.08ngm-2h-1 in New York and 21.2±0.35ngm-2h-1 at the Brazil site prior to burning. Gaseous mercury emissions averaged 74.9±0.73ngm-2h-1 after burning of the cut forest in Brazil. Extrapolating our data, measured over several weeks to months, to a full year period, deforested soil is estimated to release an additional 2.30gha-1yr-1 of gaseous mercury to the atmosphere in the Brazilian experiment and 0.41gha-1yr-1 in the New York experiment. In Brazil, this represents an additional 50% of the mercury load released during the fire itself.

ResumoThere is interest in finding the flammability limits of ethanol at reduced pressures for the future use of this biofuel in aeronautical applications taking into account typical commercial aviation altitude (<40,000. ft). The lower and upper flammability limits (LFL and UFL, respectively) for hydrated ethanol and anhydrous ethanol (92.6% and 99.5% p/p, respectively) were determined for a pressure of 101.3. kPa at temperatures between 0 and 200. °C. A heating chamber with a spherical 20-l vessel was used. First, LFL and the UFL were determined as functions of temperature and atmospheric pressure to compare results with data published in the scientific literature. Second, after checking the veracity of the data obtained for standard atmospheric pressure, the work proceeded with reduced pressures in the same temperature range. 295 experiments were carried out in total; the first 80 were to calibrate the heating chamber and compare the results with those given in the published scientific literature. 215 experiments were performed both at atmospheric and reduced pressures. The results had a correlation with the values obtained for the LFL, but values for the UFL had some differences. With respect to the water content in ethanol, it was shown that the water vapor contained in the fuel can act as an inert substance, narrowing flammability. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

ResumoMercury stored in forests can be volatilized to the atmosphere during fires. Many factors influence this process such as mercury concentration, vegetation loading and the soil temperature reached during the fire. We quantified mercury emissions from biomass and soil during a prescribed fire in Brazil using the difference in mercury burden in vegetation and soil before and after burning, and data were critically compared with those previously obtained in a similar experiment in another part of the Amazonia. The calculated mercury emission factor was 4.1±1.4gHgha-1, with the main part (78%) originating from litterfall and O-horizon, and only 14% associated with live biomass. When considering the fuel burned loading, the emission factor ranged from 40 to 53¼gHgkg-1. Data were also obtained on soil temperature profile and on Hg speciation in soil in an effort to relate these parameters to Hg emissions.

ResumoThe present work performs a computational study of a supersonic flow in a two-parallel-plates microchannel. Effects of incomplete surface accommodation on the surface properties of the microchannel were investigated by employing the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method in combination with the Cercignani-Lampis-Lord (CLL) gas-surface interaction model. The work focuses the attention on the heat flux, pressure, and shear stress distributions on the parallel-plate surfaces due to differences in the accommodation coefficients of the lower and upper surfaces of the microchannel. It was found that accommodation coefficients have different influence on heat transfer, pressure and skin friction coefficients for the conditions investigated. The analysis showed that changes on the accommodation coefficients of the upper surface affected the wall pressure and the heat flux to the lower surface.

ResumoThis work carries out two-dimensional numerical simulations of rarefied gas flow in convergent-divergent micronozzles. Such a device is considered part of a micronozzle array. Although previous studies have investigated micronozzles with continuous divergent surfaces, the present work evaluates the impact of the surface smoothness on the flowfield structure by including discontinuities on the divergent contour. Such a scenario was not previously investigated. As a secondary goal, detailed physical explanations are given for those flow features reported but not extensively discussed in previous micronozzle studies. A direct simulation Monte Carlo method is employed to describe these flows due to the moderate rarefaction degree typically observed in microdevices. The results pointed out the sensitivity of the macroscopic propertiesvelocity, pressure, and temperaturedue to the geometric variations on the divergent surface. In addition, Knudsen number distributions are computed to map nonequilibrium flow regions. The results indicated that the proposed surface discontinuities do not play the main role in the investigated micronozzle flows. This finding was not previously reported for micronozzle flows and contradicts the expected behavior in macroflows, where shock waves and/or expansion waves arise in supersonic flows experiencing abrupt changes in the flow direction.

ResumoThis work describes two-dimensional numerical simulations of rarefied gas flows in convergent-divergent micronozzles. Array-arranged micronozzles with rectangular cross-section and convex-concave divergent shape are considered. The primary goal of this paper is to assess the sensitivity of the pressure, skin friction and heat transfer coefficients as well as the impact on the specific impulse due to the presence of surface discontinuities on the divergent contour of the micronozzles. The knowledge of thermal and mechanical loads present on the micronozzle surfaces is essential to predict operational conditions of a propulsive system. Because of the rarefied nature observed in micronozzle flows and the ability to deal with complex geometries, the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method is employed to simulate the flow structure. For the conditions investigated, the computational results indicate a small dependence of the surface aerothermodynamic loads on the divergent curvature. On the other hand, these loads were strongly affected by the existence of singularities on the divergent contour, e.g., sharp corners. In spite of these findings, the specific impulse computed along the exit section was essentially the same for all investigated cases.

ResumoTungsten oxide/titania (WO3/TiO2) nanopowders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method which varied the WO3 content between 0 and 10 mol%. The powders were thermally treated in a conventional furnace and their structural, microstructural and electric properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometry, N 2 physisorption, NH3 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) in situ XANES and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and Raman spectrometry confirmed the homogeneous distribution of an amorphous WO3 phase in the TiO 2 matrix which stabilized the anatase phase through the generation of [TiO5·V0] or [TiO5·V 0] complex sites. Conventional TPR-H2 (temperature programmed reduction) along with XANES TPR-H2 and XANES TPR-EtOH showed that WO3/TiO2 sample reduction occurs through the formation of these complex clusters. Moreover, the addition of WO3 promoted an increase in the surface acidity of doped samples as revealed by NH3 chemisorption. The WO3/TiO2 bulk-ceramic samples were further used to estimate their potential application in a humidity sensor in the range of 15-85% relative humidity. Probable reasons that lead to the different humidity sensor responses of samples were given based on the structural and surface characterizations. Correlation between the sensing performance of the sensor and its structural features are also discussed. Although all samples responded as a humidity sensor, the W2T sample (2 mol% added WO3) excelled for sensitivity due to the increase in acid sites, optimum mean pore size and pore size distribution.
