ResumoThe complexity of multi-dimensional climate, environmental and human health information complicates bringing together scientists, civil society, and decision makers to provide adequate mitigation and adaptation options for the consequences of global environmental change. To provide an effective pathway to conciliate (integrate) these datasets, we present PULSE-Brazil as the Platform for Understanding Long-term Sustainability of Ecosystems and human health. The overarching aim of this paper is to focus on two study cases in the Brazilian state of Acre, 1) analyzing recent socio-environmental disasters such as the impacts of droughts and consequent increases in fire detections on the incidence of respiratory diseases, and 2) evaluating the impacts of temperature increases in combination with rainfall seasonality upon the incidence of Dengue fever. Based on data available in PULSE-Brazil platform, we also aim to provide insights on the consequences of future climate variability on ecosystems and human health. Finally, we provide a discussion on the collaborative process between scientists and policymakers that defined the PULSE-Brazil platform specifications and datasets and propose a conceptual pathway for promoting the interaction between science and policy during the process of producing a tool that allows the understating of climate-relate processes. Our results clearly demonstrated that ecosystems are under increased fire risk in the future that will, in turn, affect the health of human populations. Moreover, humans are also exposed to critical Dengue fever outbreaks with the projected increase in minimum temperatures. Therefore, minimizing the impacts of these potentially ascending socio-environmental problems is the first step for adapting to a changing climate in the Amazon region. We expect that PULSE-Brazil will serve not only as a technical tool for supporting governance, management, mitigation and long-term adaptation plans for climate impacts and natural disasters, but also will take advantage of its graphical capabilities to be an instructive vehicle that facilitates information flow for societal governance.

ResumoThis work considers mangrove cover changes in two subtropical estuaries in the southeastern coast of Brazil: Canane´ia-Iguape Coastal System and Santos Estuarine System. A sequence of Landsat images from 1985 to 2014 from both areas was segmented, classified and analyzed in order to develop a systematic GIS approach for identifying and characterizing mangrove fragments in such estuaries and how they change over time. The main goal of our work is to propose a unified hierarchical spatial database model in a GIS framework developed to incorporate different types of spatial information such as spectral (e.g. vegetation indices), spatial (e.g. fragmentation indices) and temporal (e.g. change detection) at different scales. The examples analyzed showed that changes and fluctuations in mangrove habitats could be identified and characterized revealing potential tools for handling and analyzing data focused on environmental monitoring and the coastal resource protection and conservation.

ResumoThe spatial and temporal variability of energy exchange in Tropical Instability Waves (TIWs) in the Atlantic Ocean were investigated. A spectral analysis was used to filter the 5-day mean results from Simple Ocean Data Assimilation reanalysis spanning from 1958 to 2008. TIWs were filtered over periods of 15 to 60 days and between wavelengths of 4 and 20 longitude degrees. The main approach of this study was the use of bidirectionally filtered TIW time series as the perturbation fields, and the difference in these time series from the SODA total results was considered to be the basic state for energetics analysis. The main result was that the annual cycle (period of ~ 360 days) was the main source of variability of the waves, and the semi-annual cycle (period of ~ 180 days) was a secondary variation, which indicated that TIWs occurred throughout the year but with intensity that varies seasonally. Barotropic instability acts as the mechanism that feeds and extracts energy to/from TIWs as alternate zonal bands at equatorial Atlantic. Baroclinic instability is the main mechanism that extracts energy from TIWs to the equatorial circulation north of Equator. All TIW patterns of variability were observed at west of ~ 10º W. The present study reveals new evidences regarding TIW variability and suggests that future investigations should include a detailed description of TIW dynamics as part of Atlantic Ocean equatorial circulation.

ResumoIn this response we have incorporated data on gastropod and seaweed biodiversity referred to by Avila et al. (2016, Journal of Biogeography, doi:10.1111/jbi.12816) to allow an updated analysis on marine shallow-water biogeography patterns. When compared to the biogeography patterns reported in Hachich et al. (2015, Journal of Biogeography, 42, 18711882), we find (1) no differences in the patterns originally reported for reef fish or seaweeds, (2) minor differences in gastropod species area and speciesage patterns and (3) a significant difference for the gastropod species-isolation pattern. In our original work, we reported that there was limited evidence that gastropod species richness was influenced by island isolation; however, our new analysis reveals a powermodel relationship between these variables. Thus, we are now able to conclude that gastropod species diversity, whose dispersal capacity is intermediate between seaweeds (lowest) and reef fish (highest), is also influenced by island isolation.

ResumoA satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data set facilitates investigation of the two-dimensional structure of internal solitary waves (ISWs) that propagate near the Amazon River mouth. Three distinct groups of waves are identified according to their propagation direction. While cross-shelf ISW propagation has been previously documented, it is found that the majority of the waves propagate along the shelf and upstream of the North Brazilian Current (NBC). These ISWs appear in packets with interpacket separations of ~4 km, mean crest lengths of 10 km, and intersoliton separations of ~500 m. They are observed throughout the entire semidiurnal and fortnightly tidal cycles, but their origin appears to result primarily from the steady NBC, modulated by tidal currents, as it flows over shallow bottom topography. A Froude number analysis considering mode-1 nonhydrostatic linear waves propagating upstream of the NBC is found to be consistent with a regime of transcritical generation in the study region.
