ResumoRecent studies in Amazonian tropical evergreen forests using the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) have highlighted the importance of considering the view-illumination geometry in satellite data analysis. However, contrary to the observed for evergreen forests, bidirectional effects have not been evaluated in Brazilian subtropical deciduous forests. In this study, we used MISR data to characterize the reflectance and vegetation index anisotropies in subtropical deciduous forest from south Brazil under large seasonal solar zenith angle (SZA) variation and decreasing leaf area index (LAI) from the summer to winter. MODIS data were used to observe seasonal changes in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Topographic effects on their determination were inspected by dividing data from the summer to winter and projecting results over a digital elevation model (DEM). By using the PROSAIL, we investigated the relative contribution of LAI and SZA to vegetation indices (VI) of deciduous forest. We also simulated and compared the MISR NDVI and EVI response of subtropical deciduous and tropical evergreen forests as a function of the large seasonal SZA amplitude of 33°. Results showed that the MODIS-MISR NDVI and EVI presented higher values in the summer and lower ones in the winter with decreasing LAI and increasing SZA or greater amounts of canopy shadows viewed by the sensors. In the winter, NDVI reduced local topographic effects due to the red-near infrared (NIR) band normalization. However, the contrary was observed for the three-band EVI that enhanced local variations in shaded and sunlit surfaces due to its strong dependence on the NIR band response. The reflectance anisotropy of the MISR bands increased from the summer to winter and was stronger in the backscattering direction at large view zenith angles (VZA). EVI was much more anisotropic than NDVI and the anisotropy increased from the summer to winter. It also increased from the forward scatter to the backscattering direction with the predominance of sunlit canopy components viewed by MISR, especially at large VZA. Modeling PROSAIL results confirmed the stronger anisotropy of EVI than NDVI for the subtropical deciduous and tropical evergreen forests. PROSAIL showed that LAI and SZA are coupled factors to decrease seasonally the VIs of deciduous forest with the first one having greater importance than the latter. However, PROSAIL seasonal variations in VIs were much smaller than those observed with MODIS data probably because the effects of shadows in heterogeneous canopy structures or/and cast by emergent trees and from local topography were not modeled.

ResumoMean diel cycle of latent (E), sensible (H), net longwave (Lw(net)), net shortwave (S-w), and net surface heat flux balance (S) were estimated from hourly meteorological and subsurface water temperature time series acquired for similar to 1 month during mid-austral autumn by a buoy system in a large tropical reservoir in Brazil. E and H were in phase and had their maximum (E = 163 Wm(-2); H = 39 Wm(-2)) at early morning and minimum (E = 112 Wm(-2); H = 6 Wm(-2)) midafter-noon, resulting in Bowen ratios of 0.24 and 0.06, respectively. Heat loss by evaporation therefore dominates over sensible heat used to warm surface atmosphere. Atmospheric instability was present almost all the time, increasing latent and sensible heat flux exchange coefficients by similar to 50% over their neutral values (from 1.4 x 10(-3) to 2.2 x 10(-3)). Mean Lwnet varied from 76 at late afternoon to 89 Wm(-2) at early morning, indicating its importance in the overall surface heat flux balance. All 3 fluxes (E, H, and Lw(net)) were positive (reservoir losing energy) throughout the day. The integrated daily average net energy budget S (net short wave radiation minus E+H+Lw(net)) was similar to-60 Wm(-2); nighttime energy loss exceeded daytime gain, with consequent cooling of the reservoir. A mean temperature drop of about -0.1 degrees C d(-1) was obtained by fitting a linear trend line to observed daily mean surface temperatures. In a qualitative way, diel time variations of surface water temperature were consistent to the time variability of S, indicating the dominant role of the surface heat budget in modulating surface layer temperatures of the reservoir.

ResumoFire affects large areas around the world, acting as a modeler of ecosystems and contributing to the accumulation of gases and aerosols in the atmosphere. Nowadays, remote sensing is the main source of data for studying fires, due to the possibility of acquiring global data with constant frequency. However, it is necessary to obtain more information about fires besides the spatial location, such as the amount of biomass burning. Currently, the most widely used method to estimate biomass burning is derived from Fire Radiative Power (FRP), on the assumption that energy emitted as electromagnetic radiation during combustion could be directly related to biomass burning. However, some factors can introduce errors in FRP, such as viewing angle. To determine the influence of viewing angle in FRP, a small scale experiment was conducted using sugarcane straw as biomass. Still, it was determined the biomass burning coefficient for sugarcane. The results showed that FRP tends to decrease according to the increasing of the viewing angle, and, therefore, the viewing angle was considered for the determination of the biomass burning coefficient. It is intended in the future to apply the results in order to estimate biomass burning and emissions from sugarcane pre-harvest burning.

ResumoThis work evaluates change classifications obtained using four binary change detection methods based on region, applied to optical, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and fused data. Although optical data has presented the best results, in the cases that such data is unavailable, it is possible to detect changes with high accuracy using SAR data. The use of fused images didnt improve change classification when compared to the use of single optical or SAR data.

ResumoBrazil's coast displays many wave-influenced deltas that are still incompletely understood, despite their significance for reconstructing the history of Late Pleistocene-Holocene sea-level changes in this region and the potential to advance in the knowledge of wave-influenced deltas. Among them, the Doce River delta is the most expressive, given its larger geographic extension. The present work shows that this is a wave-influenced delta that evolved within the context of Late Pleistocene-Holocene sea-level fluctuations, rather than a mid-Holocene lagoonal delta as proposed elsewhere. The delta had an initial progradation at an OSL age of 132.7 (+/- 9.1) ka after the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e, which was followed by major progradation between 45,775-49,391 and 29,678-29,226 cal yr BP. Beach ridges/spits formed during these phases were in part destroyed during an ensuing transgression between 8161-7933 and 4974-4850 cal yr BP. The central delta remained dominated by fluvial processes, which kept pace with the rising sea level due to relatively high rainfall in the Doce River drainage basin. The Doce River delta started to grow again after the late-Holocene transgression, a process still on-going at the present time. During this evolution, the Doce River was deflected northward and then southward, a process that did not result in any significant facies change when the updrift and downdrift sides of the river's mouth are compared. Such a pattern is in disagreement with previously proposed asymmetry index models for wave-influenced deltas, which predict an uneven distribution of sandy- or muddy-rich deposits in the updrift and downdrift sides of the river's mouth, respectively. Several other deltas along the Brazilian coast also display facies configuration similar to the Doce River delta or have patterns opposed to those proposed by the asymmetry index models. Based on these analogs, it can be stated that the geometries and fades patterns of wave-dominated deltas are not determined simply by the interplay of fluvial and marine processes. Instead, they can be strongly influenced by the fluvial influx, sea-level changes and/or tectonic reactivations, as it appears to be the case of Brazilian wave-influenced deltas, including the Doce River delta. Such a conclusion calls for a word of caution when applying processes-based facies models to reconstruct wave-influenced deltas in the sedimentary record.

ResumoForest biophysical structure the arrangement and frequency of leaves and stems emerges from growth, mortality and space filling dynamics, and may also influence those dynamics by structuring light environments. To investigate this interaction, we developed models that could use LiDAR remote sensing to link leaf area profiles with tree size distributions, comparing models which did not (metabolic scaling theory) and did allow light to influence this link. We found that a light environment-to-structure link was necessary to accurately simulate tree size distributions and canopy structure in two contrasting Amazon forests. Partitioning leaf area profiles into size-class components, we found that demographic rates were related to variation in light absorption, with mortality increasing relative to growth in higher light, consistent with a light environment feedback to size distributions. Combining LiDAR with models linking forest structure and demography offers a high-throughput approach to advance theory and investigate climate-relevant tropical forest change.
