Landsat-8
Chlorophyll-a
Inland Waters
aquatic remote sensing
ResumoRetrieval of aquatic biogeochemical variables, such as the near-surface concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chla) in inland and coastal waters via remote observations, has long been regarded as a challenging task. This manuscript applies Mixture Density Networks (MDN) that use the visible spectral bands available by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard Landsat-8 to estimate Chla. We utilize a database of co-located in situ radiometric and Chla measurements (N 4,354), referred to as Type A data, to train and test an MDN model (MDNA). This algorithms performance, having been proven for other satellite missions, is further evaluated against other widely used machine learning models (e.g., support vector machines), as well as other domain-specific solutions (OC3), and shown to offer significant advancements in the field. Our performance assessment using a held-out test data set suggests that a 49% (median) accuracy with near-zero bias can be achieved via the MDNA model, offering improvements of 20 to 100% in retrievals with respect to other models. The sensitivity of the MDNA model and benchmarking methods to uncertainties from atmospheric correction (AC) methods, is further quantified through a semi-global matchup dataset (N 3,337), referred to as Type B data. To tackle the increased uncertainties, alternative MDN models (MDNB) are developed through various features of the Type B data (e.g., Rayleigh-corrected reflectance spectra ρs). Using heldout data, along with spatial and temporal analyses, we demonstrate that these alternative models show promise in enhancing the retrieval accuracy adversely influenced by the AC process. Results lend support for the adoption of MDNB models for regional and potentially global processing of OLI imagery, until a more robust AC method is developed. Index TermsChlorophyll-a, coastal water, inland water, Landsat-8, machine learning, ocean color, aquatic remote sensing.

ResumoOngoing anthropogenic climate change is becoming one of the major threats to biodiversity. Studies that aim at projecting the future impacts of ongoing climate change on biodiversity should use general circulation models (GCMs) that show a good performance in the region of study, an information that is lacking for the Atlantic Forest. Here, we evaluated the performance of different GCMs over the Atlantic Forest, describe the predicted climatic changes for the regions based on the best performing GCMs, review the literature on observed and predicted impacts of climate change on the Atlantic Forest biodiversity, and discuss adaptation strategies to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the regions biodiversity. The Atlantic Forest, with its large latitudinal and altitudinal range, is under different climatic regimes, showing different climate change predictions in its northern and southern portions. Eight GCMs showed good performance for the following region: ACCESS10, CanCM4, CanESM1, CMCC-CM, HadGEM2-CC, HadGEM2-ES, MIROC4h, and MPI-ESM-LR. Under a business-as-usual scenario (RCP 8.5), these models project a mean temperature increase of 4.8 °C to 5.6 °C. Precipitation, however, did not show a clear trend in the Atlantic Forest as a whole, possibly because of the expected decrease in precipitation in its northern portion and increase in southern. There is a growing number of studies projecting the impacts of climate change on Atlantic Forest biodiversity, with a taxonomic bias toward terrestrial vertebrates, showing with high confidence that there is a high risk of biodiversity loss in the Atlantic Forest due to climate change. There are, however, significant knowledge gaps in altitudinal, freshwater, and coastal environments. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), which uses ecosystems to promote societal adaptation to climate change, is particularly appropriate for the Atlantic Forest because of favorable legal background for conservation, restoration, and payment for ecosystem services in states within the biome; presence of influential civil society organizations and academic institutions; and thriving on-the-ground experiences in EbA.

ResumoWith the inclusion of demographic characteristics of the population living in vulnerable areas, a combination of empirical and climate models was used to project changes to climate and in hydro-geo-meteorological disasters in Brazil. This study investigated the effect of extreme rainfall changes and the risk of floods and landslides under 1.5, 2.0, and 4.0◦ C global warming levels (GWLs). Projections from a large ensemble of pre-CMIP6 models and different warming levels show a remarkable change in heavy precipitation. As a result, with increasing warming this enhances the risk of landslides and flash floods in the context of climate change. Comparisons of vulnerability and change in potential impacts of landslides and floods show that three regions, highly densely populated areas, are the most exposed to landslides and floods. The Southern and Southeastern of Brazil stand out, including metropolitan regions with high economic development and densely populated, which may be those where disasters can intensify both in terms of frequency and magnitude. The eastern portion of the Northeast is also signaled as one of the affected regions due to its high vulnerability and exposure since the present period, although the projections of future climate do not allow conclusive results regarding the intensification of extreme rainfall events in scenarios below 4◦C. The main metropolitan regions and tourist resorts, and key infrastructure in Brazil are located in those regions. This study highlights the importance of environmental policies to protect human lives and minimize financial losses in the coming decades and reinforces the need for decision-making, monitoring, and early warning systems to better manage disasters as part of disaster risk reduction risk management.

ResumoPrecipitation is a critical component of Earths hydrological cycle since the latent heat energy contained in the clouds cannot be seen or measured directly. Rainfall, however, is the product of the release of this energy, and rainfall can be measured. Due to the rapid variability and high intermittence, in space and time, of the water and energy cycle elements (rainfall, clouds, and water vapor), the satellite-based retrievals (especially those from low-inclination orbit missions) are the best way to monitor and quantify the water and energy exchanges over the tropics, since the number of available meteorological stations are not enough to cover adequately all continental tropical regions. The aim of this chapter is to summarize the most recent studies on the cloud physical process involved in rainfall occurrence in tropical continental regions, including the main results of CHUVA projectCHUVA, meaning rain in Portugueseand some ground validation activities over Brazil. Some improvement on cloud microphysical description over tropical regions by using polarimetric radars and associated electrification processes will be also presented. Finally, the contribution of the aerosol in the process of formation of precipitation over tropical regions will be showcased in the last section of the chapter.

ResumoAs the largest river basin on Earth, the Amazon is of major importance to the world's climate and water resources. Over the past decades, advances in satellite-based remote sensing (RS) have brought our understanding of its terrestrial water cycle and the associated hydrological processes to a new era. Here, we review major studies and the various techniques using satellite RS in the Amazon. We show how RS played a major role in supporting new research and key findings regarding the Amazon water cycle, and how the region became a laboratory for groundbreaking investigations of new satellite retrievals and analyses. At the basin-scale, the understanding of several hydrological processes was only possible with the advent of RS observations, such as the characterization of "rainfall hotspots" in the Andes-Amazon transition, evapotranspiration rates, and variations of surface waters and groundwater storage. These results strongly contribute to the recent advances of hydrological models and to our new understanding of the Amazon water budget and aquatic environments. In the context of upcoming hydrology-oriented satellite missions, which will offer the opportunity for new synergies and new observations with finer space-time resolution, this review aims to guide future research agenda toward integrated monitoring and understanding of the Amazon water from space. Integrated multidisciplinary studies, fostered by international collaborations, set up future directions to tackle the great challenges the Amazon is currently facing, from climate change to increased anthropogenic pressure.
