ResumoThis review presents how the boreal and the tropical forests affect the atmosphere, its chemical composition, its function, and further how that affects the climate and, in return, the ecosystems through feedback processes. Observations from key tower sites standing out due to their long-term comprehensive observations: The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory in Central Amazonia, the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory in Siberia, and the Station to Measure Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations at Hyytiäla in Finland. The review is complemented by short-term observations from networks and large experiments. The review discusses atmospheric chemistry observations, aerosol formation and processing, physiochemical aerosol, and cloud condensation nuclei properties and finds surprising similarities and important differences in the two ecosystems. The aerosol concentrations and chemistry are similar, particularly concerning the main chemical components, both dominated by an organic fraction, while the boreal ecosystem has generally higher concentrations of inorganics, due to higher influence of long-range transported air pollution. The emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds are dominated by isoprene and monoterpene in the tropical and boreal regions, respectively, being the main precursors of the organic aerosol fraction. Observations and modeling studies show that climate change and deforestation affect the ecosystems such that the carbon and hydrological cycles in Amazonia are changing to carbon neutrality and affect precipitation downwind. In Africa, the tropical forests are so far maintaining their carbon sink. It is urgent to better understand the interaction between these major ecosystems, the atmosphere, and climate, which calls for more observation sites, providing long-term data on water, carbon, and other biogeochemical cycles. This is essential in finding a sustainable balance between forest preservation and reforestation versus a potential increase in food production and biofuels, which are critical in maintaining ecosystem services and global climate stability. Reducing global warming and deforestation is vital for tropical forests.

ResumoClimate change, which has been associated with emerging and even elevated risks on the safety and well-being of societies, has already proved to be a significant challenge in todays world. Furthermore, a new set of IPCC climate projections reveals that rainfall and high-temperature extremes are expected to exceed the extreme conditions already experienced in Brazil. Such conditions are expressed by several events such as the drought and water crisis in the southeastern region in 20142015; drought in the northeast region during 20102016; and droughts in Amazonia in 2005, 2010, and 2016 and floods in 2009. These extreme events place several challenges on health, infrastructure, agriculture, biodiversity, and water resources, and therefore with significant environmental and socioeconomic implications. A major focus of this chapter is to provide elements to better inform users from government, organizations, professionals, and individuals on how climate change is likely to impact the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus in Brazil. For that purpose, two case studies will be discussed: (i) why a nexus approach to resource management is important for Cerrado and Caatinga biome, Brazils largest available stock of land for agricultural expansion and renewable energy production (NEXUS Project), and (ii) we analyzed the Paraíba do Sul river basin, which encloses one of the most developed and industrialized regions in Brazil. The first case refers to the development of analyses on the transformation for sustainability in the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, considering the construction of scenarios and indicators, built through a participatory approach. The identification and construction of indicators were carried out in a collaborative way with experts using the 2030 Agenda target framework.

ResumoCanopy gaps are openings in the forest canopy resulting from branch fall and tree mortality events. The geographical distribution of large canopy gaps may reflect underlying variation in mortality and growth processes. However, a lack of data at the appropriate scale has limited our ability to study this relationship until now. We detected canopy gaps using a unique LiDAR dataset consisting of 650 transects randomly distributed across 2500 km2 of the Brazilian Amazon. We characterized the size distribution of canopy gaps using a power law and we explore the variation in the exponent, α. We evaluated how the α varies across the Amazon, in response to disturbance by humans and natural environmental processes that influence tree mortality rates. We observed that South-eastern forests contained a higher proportion of large gaps than North-western, which is consistent with recent work showing greater tree mortality rates in the Southeast than the Northwest. Regions characterized by strong wind gust speeds, frequent lightning and greater water shortage also had a high proportion of large gaps, indicating that geographical variation in α is a reflection of underlying disturbance processes. Forests on fertile soils were also found to contain a high proportion of large gaps, in part because trees grow tall on these sites and create large gaps when they fall; thus, canopy gap analysis picked up differences in growth as well as mortality processes. Finally, we found that human-modified forests had a higher proportion of large gaps than intact forests, as we would expect given that these forests have been disturbed. Synthesis. The proportion of large gaps in the forest canopy varied substantially over the Brazilian Amazon. We have shown that the trends can be explained by geographical variation in disturbance and growth. The frequency of extreme weather events is predicted to increase under climate change, and changes could lead to greater forest disturbance, which should be detectable as an increased proportion of large gaps in intact forests.

ResumoAccurate measurements of terrain elevation are crucial for many ecological applications. In this study, we sought to assess new global three-dimensional Earth observation data acquired by the spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) missions Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI). For this, we examined the ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3A Land and Vegetation Height, version 5 (20 × 14 m and 100 × 14 m segments) and the GEDI Level 2A Footprint Elevation and Height Metrics, version 2 (25 m circle). We conducted our analysis across four land cover classes (bare soil, herbaceous, forest, savanna), and six forest types (temperate broad-leaved, temperate needle-leaved, temperate mixed, tropical upland, tropical floodplain, and tropical secondary forest). For assessment of terrain elevation estimates from spaceborne LiDAR data we used high resolution airborne data. Our results indicate that both LiDAR missions provide accurate terrain elevation estimates across different land cover classes and forest types with mean error less than 1 m, except in tropical forests. However, using a GEDI algorithm with a lower signal end threshold (e.g., algorithm 5) can improve the accuracy of terrain elevation estimates for tropical upland forests. Specific environmental parameters (terrain slope, canopy height and canopy cover) and sensor parameters (GEDI degrade flags, terrain estimation algorithm; ICESat-2 number of terrain photons, terrain uncertainty) can be applied to improve the accuracy of ICESat-2 and GEDI-based terrain estimates. Although the goodness-of-fit statistics from the two spaceborne LiDARs are not directly comparable since they possess different footprint sizes (100 × 14 m segment or 20 × 14 m segment vs. 25 m circle), we observed similar trends on the impact of terrain slope, canopy cover and canopy height for both sensors. Terrain slope strongly impacts the accuracy of both ICESat-2 and GEDI terrain elevation estimates for both forested and non-forested areas. In the case of GEDI the impact of slope is, however, partly caused by horizontal geolocation error. Moreover, dense canopies (i.e., canopy cover higher than 90%) affect the accuracy of spaceborne LiDAR terrain estimates, while canopy height does not, when considering samples over flat terrains. Our analysis of the accuracy and precision of current versions of spaceborne LiDAR products for different vegetation types and environmental conditions provides insights on parameter selection and estimated uncertainty to inform users of these key global datasets.

ResumoSubseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) precipitation prediction in boreal spring and summer months, which contains a significant number of high-signal events, is scientifically challenging and prediction skill has remained poor for years. Tibetan Plateau (TP) spring observed surface ­temperatures show a lag correlation with summer precipitation in several remote regions, but current global landatmosphere coupled models are unable to represent this behavior due to significant errors in producing observed TP surface temperatures. To address these issues, the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) program launched the Impact of Initialized Land Temperature and Snowpack on Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction (LS4P) initiative as a community effort to test the impact of land temperature in high-mountain regions on S2S prediction by climate models: more than 40 institutions worldwide are participating in this project. After using an innovative new land state initialization approach based on observed surface 2-m temperature over the TP in the LS4P experiment, results from a multimodel ensemble provide evidence for a causal relationship in the observed association between the Plateau spring land temperature and summer precipitation over several regions across the world through teleconnections. The influence is underscored by an out-of-phase oscillation between the TP and Rocky Mountain surface temperatures. This study reveals for the first time that high-mountain land temperature could be a substantial source of S2S precipitation predictability, and its effect is probably as large as ocean surface temperature over global hotspot regions identified here; the ensemble means in some hotspots produce more than 40% of the observed anomalies. This LS4P approach should stimulate more follow-on explorations.

ResumoThe collaboration between the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) and the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) provides open access to an unprecedented ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) simulations, across the 14 CORDEX continental-scale domains, with global coverage. These simulations have been used as a new line of evidence to assess regional climate projections in the latest contribution of the Working Group I (WGI) to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), particularly in the regional chapters and the Atlas. Here, we present the work done in the framework of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) to assemble a consistent worldwide CORDEX grand ensemble, aligned with the deadlines and activities of IPCC AR6. This work addressed the uneven and heterogeneous availability of CORDEX ESGF data by supporting publication in CORDEX domains with few archived simulations and performing quality control. It also addressed the lack of comprehensive documentation by compiling information from all contributing regional models, allowing for an informed use of data. In addition to presenting the worldwide CORDEX dataset, we assess here its consistency for precipitation and temperature by comparing climate change signals in regions with overlapping CORDEX domains, obtaining overall coincident regional climate change signals. The C3S CORDEX dataset has been used for the assessment of regional climate change in the IPCC AR6 (and for the interactive Atlas) and is available through the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS).

ResumoO objetivo desta pesquisa foi quantificar o desmatamento, considerando as mudanças espaciais e temporais da perda de floresta para o período de 1985 a 2018. Utilizou-se imagens do sensor Landsat para o mesmo período, referentes às órbitas/ pontos 223/62 e 223/61. Foram realizadas composições coloridas RGB, realce linear de contraste das imagens e segmentação. Em seguida, realizou-se a interpretação das imagens por discriminação de classes. Os polígonos foram categorizados em 6 faixas de tamanho de áreas desmatadas. Adicionalmente, realizou-se a edição dos resultados do mapeamento e a elaboração de cartas temáticas. A expansão do desmatamento entre 1985 e 2018 acarretou perda de aproximadamente 298 mil ha de floresta (57% da área do município). Em todos os anos, foram observados valores elevados de polígonos no intervalo ≤ 6,25 ha e reduzido valor no intervalo > 50 ha. Os pequenos fragmentos (≤ 6,25 ha) respondiam por 15% de todo o desmatamento, enquanto os grandes (> 50 ha) respondiam por 45%. Ao longo do período analisado, foram observadas diferenças tanto na análise temporal, quanto nos padrões de distribuição do desmatamento, indicando forte potencialidade futura à perda de floresta. ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to quantify deforestation, considering the spatial and temporal changes of forest loss for the period from 1985 to 2018. We used Landsat sensor images for the same period, according to orbits/points 223/62 and 223/61. Color compositions, linear contrast enhancement and segmentation were performed. The interpretation and the classification of the images were performed through class discrimination. The polygons were classified in 6 size ranges of deforested areas. Additionally, the mapping results were edited and thematic letters were elaborated. The expansion of deforestation led to a loss of forest of approximately 298 thousand ha between 1985 and 2018 (57% of the municipality area). In all years, high values of polygons were observed in the range ≤ 6.25 ha and reduced value in the range > 50 ha. Small fragments (≤ 6.25 ha) accounted for 15% of all deforestation, while large fragments (> 50 ha) accounted for 45%. The analyzed period showed substantial differences in both temporal analysis and deforestation distribution patterns, indicating a strong potential for future forest loss.

ResumoGlobal climate change is expected to increasingly affect climate-sensitive sectors of society, such as the economy and environment, with signifi cant impacts on water, energy, agriculture and fi sheries. This is the case in South America, whose economy is highly dependent on the agricultural sector. Here, we analyzed the sensitivity of South American climate to positive extremes of Antarctic sea ice (ASI) extent and volume at continental and regional scales. Sensitivity ensemble experiments were conducted with the GFDL-CM2.1 model and compared with the ERA-Interim reanalysis dataset. The results have shown signifi cant impacts on the seasonal regime of precipitation, air temperature and humidity in South America, such as a gradual establishment of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone, the formation of the Upper Tropospheric Cyclonic Vortex, the strengthening of Bolivian High and the presence of a low level cyclonic circulation anomaly over the South Atlantic Subtropical High region which contributed, for instance, to increased precipitation over the Southeastern Brazil. A northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone was initially also a response pattern to the increased ASI.
