ResumoNowadays, the monitoring of water is essential for the sustainability and better management of water resources. The use of remote sensing data is important, since it allows evaluation of dynamic problems in aquatic systems, such as the eutrophication of bodies of water and suspended sediment. The aim of this study was to estimate chlorophyll-a concentrations in a reservoir of the semi-arid region of Brazil using simulated orbital-sensor data, as an aid in the management of water resources. The study area corresponded to the Orós reservoir, in the State of Ceará, Brazil. Water samples for analysis of the chlorophyll-a and measurements of the spectral radiance of the aquatic system were collected from 20 points. The radiance was measured by spectroradiometer. The data were collected in June and August of 2011. The model using three bands of the MERIS sensor (7, 9 and 10) presented an R2 of 0.84. For the two-band model (7 and 9), the value of R2 was 0.85. The waters of the Orós reservoir were all classified as eutrophic. The main optically active component in modelling the shape of the spectra was chlorophyll-a. The models showed a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.45 and 3.61 μg L-1 for the three- and two-band models respectively. The models displayed high coefficients of determination, i.e. the simulations show the feasibility of estimating chlorophyll-a concentration from the data of the MERIS orbital sensor. RESUMO: O monitoramento da água nos dias atuais é essencial para a sustentabilidade e para a melhor gestão dos recursos hídricos. O uso de dados de sensoriamento remoto é relevante, uma vez que permite a avaliação de problemas dinâmicos em sistemas aquáticos, tais como a eutrofização de corpos de água e dos sedimentos em suspensão. Objetivou-se estimar as concentrações de clorofila-a em reservatório da região semiárida do Brasil, usando dados simulados de sensor orbital, como suporte à gestão dos recursos hídricos. A área de estudo corresponde ao açude Orós, no estado do Ceará. As amostras de água para análise da clorofila-a e as medições da radiância espectral do sistema aquático foram coletadas em 20 pontos. As medidas de radiância foram realizadas utilizando um espectrorradiômetro. Os dados foram coletados nos meses de junho e agosto de 2011. O modelo usando três bandas (7, 9 e 10) do sensor MERIS apresentou R2 igual a 0,84. Para o modelo de duas bandas (7 e 9), o valor de R2 foi de 0,85. As águas do reservatório Orós foram todas classificadas como eutróficas. O principal componente opticamente ativo modelando a forma dos espectros foi clorofila-a. Os modelos apresentaram um erro médio absoluto (EMA) de 3,45 e 3,61 μg L-1, respectivamente, para os modelos de três e de duas bandas. Os modelos apresentaram coeficientes de determinação altos, ou seja, as simulações mostram a viabilidade de se estimar as concentrações de clorofila-a a partir dos dados do sensor orbital MERIS.

ResumoThe complexity of multi-dimensional climate, environmental and human health information complicates bringing together scientists, civil society, and decision makers to provide adequate mitigation and adaptation options for the consequences of global environmental change. To provide an effective pathway to conciliate (integrate) these datasets, we present PULSE-Brazil as the Platform for Understanding Long-term Sustainability of Ecosystems and human health. The overarching aim of this paper is to focus on two study cases in the Brazilian state of Acre, 1) analyzing recent socio-environmental disasters such as the impacts of droughts and consequent increases in fire detections on the incidence of respiratory diseases, and 2) evaluating the impacts of temperature increases in combination with rainfall seasonality upon the incidence of Dengue fever. Based on data available in PULSE-Brazil platform, we also aim to provide insights on the consequences of future climate variability on ecosystems and human health. Finally, we provide a discussion on the collaborative process between scientists and policymakers that defined the PULSE-Brazil platform specifications and datasets and propose a conceptual pathway for promoting the interaction between science and policy during the process of producing a tool that allows the understating of climate-relate processes. Our results clearly demonstrated that ecosystems are under increased fire risk in the future that will, in turn, affect the health of human populations. Moreover, humans are also exposed to critical Dengue fever outbreaks with the projected increase in minimum temperatures. Therefore, minimizing the impacts of these potentially ascending socio-environmental problems is the first step for adapting to a changing climate in the Amazon region. We expect that PULSE-Brazil will serve not only as a technical tool for supporting governance, management, mitigation and long-term adaptation plans for climate impacts and natural disasters, but also will take advantage of its graphical capabilities to be an instructive vehicle that facilitates information flow for societal governance.

ResumoAn innovative remote sensing approach that combines land-use change and water quality information is proposed in order to investigate if Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) area extension is associated with water siltation in the Tapajós River Basin (Brazil), containing the largest small-scale gold mining district in the world. Taking advantage of a 40-year period of the multi-satellite imagery archive, the objective of this paper is to build a normalized time-series in order to evaluate the influence of temporal mining expansion on the water siltation data (TSS, Total Suspended Solids concentration) derived from previous research. The methodological approach was set to deliver a full characterization of the ASGM expansion from its initial stages in the early 1970s to the present. First, based on IRS/LISSIII images acquired in 2012, the historical Landsat image database (19732001) was corrected for radiometric and atmospheric effects using dark vegetation as reference to create a normalized time-series. Next, a complete update of the mining areas distribution in 2012 derived from the TerraClass Project (an official land-use classification for the Brazilian Amazon) was conducted having IRS/LISSIII as the base map with the support of auxiliary data and vector editing. Once the ASGM in 2012 was quantified (261.7 km2 ) and validated with photos, a reverse classification of ASGM in 2001 (171.7 km2 ), 1993 (166.3 km2 ), 1984 (47.5 km2 ), and 1973 (15.4 km2 ) with the use of Landsat archives was applied. This procedure relies on the assumption that ASGM changes in the land cover are severe and remain detectable from satellite sensors for decades. The mining expansion area over time was then combined with the (TSS) data retrieved from the same atmospherically corrected satellite imagery based on the literature. In terms of gold mining expansion and water siltation effects, four main periods of ASGM activities were identified in the study area: (i) 19581977, first occurrence of mining activities and low water impacts; (ii) 19781993, introduction of low-budget mechanization associated with very high gold prices resulting in large mining area expansion and high water siltation levels; (iii) 19942003, general recession of ASGM activities and exhaustion of easy-access gold deposits, resulting in decreased TSS; (iv) 2004 to present, intensification of ASGM encouraged by high gold prices, resulting in an increase of TSS.

This article explores the use of nonlinear geostatistical procedures, known as kriging and simulation indicator approaches, for spatial modeling of categorical attributes. The categorical information is initially represented by a set of sample points observed within a spatial region of interest. The original sample set is used to generate indicator fields take into account the classes of the categorical data. The indicator fields, or indicator samples, contain 0 and 1 attribute values according to the class they are representing. Empirical and theoretical semivariograms are built from the indicator samples to represent the spatial variation of each class in relation to the others. The geostatistical procedures, making use of the samples and the theoretical semivariograms, allow obtaining an approximation of the stochastic model, the conditioned probability distribution function (cpdf) of the categorical attribute at any desired spatial location. From any cpdf it is possible to assess optimal prediction, or estimate, and uncertainty values associated to the stochastic model. Optimal prediction as mean, median or any quantile values can be assessed. Uncertainty values are obtained by means of the maximum cpdf probability, Shannon entropy, or another criterion. The uncertainty values can be used to qualify the predictions and can also be considered to generate constrained spatial predictions, or constrained classifications, that are important in decision makings related to environmental planning activities, for example. The concepts here presented are applied and tested in a case study developed for a sample set of soil texture observed in an experimental farm in the region of São Carlos city in São Paulo State, Brazil. Four classes of soil texture are considered, sandy, medium clay, clay and too clay, in order to get the cpdf values. Some maps derived by constraints are presented and analyzed considering different probability values from the attribute stocha.

ResumoWhat can be considered big data when dealing with remote sensing imagery? In general terms, big data is defined as data requiring high management capabilities characterized by 3 Vs: Volume, Velocity and Variety. In the past, (e.g. 1975), considering the computational and databases resources available, a series of Landsat-1 imagery from the same region could be considered big data. Nowadays, several satellites are available, and they produce massive amounts of data. Certainly, an image data set obtained by a single satellite, for a specific region and along time, fills the 3 Vs requirements to be considered big data as well. In order to deal with remote sensing big data, we propose to explore the generation of metadata based on the detection of simple features. Besides the intrinsic geographic information on every remote sensing scene, no additional metadata is usually considered. We propose basic image processing algorithms to detect basic well-known patterns, and include them as tags, such as cloud, shadow, stadium, vegetation, and water, according to what is detectable at each spatial resolution. In this work we show preliminary results using imagery from RapidEye sensor, with 5 meter spatial resolution, composed by two full coverages of Brazil with RapidEye multispectral imagery (around 40k scenes).

What can be considered big data when dealing with remote sensing imagery? In general terms, big data is defined as data requiring high
management capabilities characterized by 3 V?s: Volume, Velocity and Variety. In the past, (e.g. 1975), considering the computational
and databases resources available, a series of Landsat-1 imagery from the same region could be considered big data. Nowadays, several
satellites are available, and they produce massive amounts of data. Certainly, an image data set obtained by a single satellite, for a
specific region and along time, fills the 3 V?s requirements to be considered big data as well. In order to deal with remote sensing big
data, we propose to explore the generation of metadata based on the detection of simple features. Besides the intrinsic geographic information on every remote sensing scene, no additional metadata is usually considered. We propose basic image processing algorithms to
detect basic well-known patterns, and include them as tags, such as cloud, shadow, stadium, vegetation, and water, according to what
is detectable at each spatial resolution. In this work we show preliminary results using imagery from RapidEye sensor, with 5 meter
spatial resolution, composed by two full coverages of Brazil with RapidEye multispectral imagery (around 40k scenes)..

ResumoAmong different applications using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, land cover classification of rain forest areas has been investigated. Previous results showed that L-band is more appropriate for such applications. However, SAR images have limited discriminability for mapping large sets of classes compared with optical imagery. The objective of this study was to carry out an analysis about the discriminative capability of an L-band fully polarimetric SAR complex image, compared to the possible subsets of polarizations in amplitude/intensity, for mapping land cover classes in Amazon regions. Two case studies using ALOS PALSAR L-band fully polarimetric images over Brazilian Amazon regions were considered. Several thematic classes, organized into scenarios, were considered for each case study. These scenarios represent distinct classification tasks with variated complexities. Performing a simultaneous analysis of different scenarios is a distinct way to assess the discriminative capability offered by a particular image. A methodology to organize thematic classes into scenarios is proposed in this study. The maximum likelihood classifier (MLC), with specific distributions for SAR data, and support vector machine were considered in this study. The iterated conditional modes algorithm was adopted to incorporate the contextual information in both methods. Considering a kappa coefficient equal to 0.8 as an acceptable minimum, the experiments show that none subset of polarization or fully polarimetric image allows performing discrimination between forest and regeneration types; single-polarized HV data provide acceptable results when the classification problem deals with the discrimination of a few classes; depending on the classification scenario, the dual-polarized HH+HV image produces similar results when compared to multipolarized (i.e., HH+HV+VV) data; in turn, if the MLC method is adopted, multipolarized data may produce close or statistically indifferent classification results compared to those produced with the use of fully polarimetric data.
