ResumoForest fires are ocurring in great number throughout the Amazon region, affecting the natural cycle of vegetation and ecosystem structure. They also can cause changes in the local and regional climate, and specifically in the surface energy flux patterns. The effects of fire on forest water cycling are not well understood, especially due to the difficulty of obtaining surface flux measurements in fire-affected areas with high temporal and spatial resolution. The present study aimed to evaluate, based on MODIS global evapotranspiration data (MOD16), the temporal behaviour of evapotranspiration in a primary Amazonian forest area affected by fire on September 12th, 2010 in the municipality of Cumaru do Norte, state of Para, Brazil. The forest area was mapped using a TM/Landsat 5 image acquired during the time of fire burning. The analysis of MOD16 data from the month before and from a month after the fire indicated a 27% decrease in evapotranspiration. The average value of evapotranspiration for the 3 years pre-fire was 1436.0 mm yr-1. After the significant decrease was verified immediately post-fire, evapotranspiration values increased at an average annual rate of 20%. The highest increase rate (58%) was verified one year after the fire. The average value of evapotranspiration 3 years post-fire was 1382.6 mm yr-1, which is quite close to that average value verified prior to burning. Therefore we conclude that 3 years was enough time for this forest area to recover its original state in terms of water vapor fluxes. Regarding this result, it is important to note that a high severity fire can alter the canopy characteristcs more strongly than a low severity fire, which means that distinct disturbance regimes will affect the evapotranspiration fluxes after the fire in forested areas quite differently.

ResumoThis article estimates for the fi rst time the extents of the landscape changes in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, as registered by satellite images acquired during the fl ood peak and drought events ever recorded in the Negro River (in Portuguese, "Rio Negro"). The Anavilhanas constitutes the second largest group of freshwater islands in the world, comprising a complex pattern of islands, channels, lagoons, swamps, beaches and sandbanks, which dramatically changes during the seasonal periods of high and low waters. The results showed that approximately 1,700 Km² of fl ooded area in the high water period were reduced by about 50% during the low water period, allowing the appearance of more than 800 Km² of beaches, sandbanks, and shallow submerged sandbanks. The extent of these seasonal landscape changes associated with the pulses of rising and descending waters are dominant environmental factors aff ecting the rich biota of the archipelago, which is refuge of a diversifi ed fauna and fl ora. Therefore the generated maps can be useful information for the hydrological modelling studies and for environmental monitoring of the region.

ResumoFires are both a cause and consequence of important changes in the Amazon region. The development and implementation of better fire management practices and firefighting strategies are important steps to reduce the Amazon ecosystems' degradation and carbon emissions from land-use change in the region. We extended the application of the maximum entropy method (MaxEnt) to model fire occurrence probability in the Brazilian Amazon on a monthly basis during the 2008 and 2010 fire seasons using fire detection data derived from satellite images. Predictor variables included climatic variables, inhabited and uninhabited protected areas and land-use change maps. Model fit was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC) value (threshold-independent analysis), binomial tests and model sensitivity and specificity (threshold-dependent analysis). Both threshold-independent (AUC≤0.919±0.004) and threshold-dependent evaluation indicate satisfactory model performance. Pasture, annual deforestation and secondary vegetation are the most effective variables for predicting the distribution of the occurrence data. Our results show that MaxEnt may become an important tool to guide on-the-ground decisions on fire prevention actions and firefighting planning more effectively and thus to minimise forest degradation and carbon loss from forest fires in Amazonian ecosystems.

ResumoVegetation indices (VIs) calculated from remotely sensed reflectance are widely used tools for characterizing the extent and status of vegetated areas. Recently, however, their capability to monitor the Amazon forest phenology has been intensely scrutinized. In this study, we analyze the consistency of VIs seasonal patterns obtained from two MODIS products: the Collection 5 BRDF product (MCD43) and the Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction algorithm (MAIAC). The spatio-temporal patterns of the VIs were also compared with field measured leaf litterfall, gross ecosystem productivity and active microwave data. Our results show that significant seasonal patterns are observed in all VIs after the removal of view-illumination effects and cloud contamination. However, we demonstrate inconsistencies in the characteristics of seasonal patterns between different VIs and MODIS products. We demonstrate that differences in the original reflectance band values form a major source of discrepancy between MODIS VI products. The MAIAC atmospheric correction algorithm significantly reduces noise signals in the red and blue bands. Another important source of discrepancy is caused by differences in the availability of clear-sky data, as the MAIAC product allows increased availability of valid pixels in the equatorial Amazon. Finally, differences in Vis seasonal patterns were also caused by MODIS collection 5 calibration degradation. The correlation of remote sensing and field data also varied spatially, leading to different temporal offsets between Vls, active microwave and field measured data. We conclude that recent improvements in the MAIAC product have led to changes in the characteristics of spatio-temporal patterns of VIs seasonality across the Amazon forest, when compared to the MCD43 product. Nevertheless, despite improved quality and reduced uncertainties in the MAIAC product, a robust biophysical interpretation of VIs seasonality is still missing.

ResumoIn the Amazon region, the estimation of radiation fluxes through remote sensing techniques is hindered by the lack of ground measurements required as input in the models, as well as the difficulty to obtain cloud-free images. Here, we assess an approach to estimate net radiation (Rn) and its components under all-sky conditions for the Amazon region through the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) model utilizing only remote sensing and reanalysis data. The study period comprised six years, between January 2001December 2006, and images from MODIS sensor aboard the Terra satellite and GLDAS reanalysis products were utilized. The estimates were evaluated with flux tower measurements within the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) project. Comparison between estimates obtained by the proposed method and observations from LBA towers showed errors between 12.5% and 16.4% and 11.3% and 15.9% for instantaneous and daily Rn, respectively. Our approach was adequate to minimize the problem related to strong cloudiness over the region and allowed to map consistently the spatial distribution of net radiation components in Amazonia. We conclude that the integration of reanalysis products and satellite data, eliminating the need for surface measurements as input model, was a useful proposition for the spatialization of the radiation fluxes in the Amazon region, which may serve as input information needed by algorithms that aim to determine evapotranspiration, the most important component of the Amazon hydrological balance.

ResumoAccurately mapping the spatial distribution of tree species in tropical environments provides valuable insights for ecologists and forest managers. This process may play an important role in reducing fieldwork costs, monitoring changes in canopy biodiversity, and locating parent trees to collect seeds for forest restoration efforts. However, mapping tree species in tropical forests with remote sensing data is a challenge because of high floristic and spectral diversity. In this research, we discriminated and mapped tree species in tropical seasonal semi-deciduous forests (Brazilian Atlantic Forest Biome) by using airborne hyperspectral and simulated multispectral data in the 450 to 2400 nm wavelength range. After quantifying the spectral variability within and among individual tree crowns of eight species, three supervised machine learning classifiers were applied to discriminate the species at the pixel level. Linear Discriminant Analysis outperformed Support Vector Machines with Linear and Radial Basis Function (RBF-SVMs) kernels and Random Forests in almost all the tested cases. An average classification accuracy of 70% was obtained when using the visible/near-infrared (VNIR, 450-919 nm) bands. The inclusion of shortwave infrared bands (SWIR, 1045-2400 nm) increased the accuracy to 84%. Narrow-band vegetation indices (VIs) were also tested and increased the classification accuracy by up to 5% when combined with VNIR features. Furthermore, the spectral bands of the WorldView-3 (WV-3) satellite sensor were simulated for classification purposes. WV-3 VNIR bands provided an accuracy of 57.4%, which increased to 74.8% when using WV-3 SWIR bands. We also tested the production of species maps by using an object-oriented approach that integrated a novel segmentation algorithm that was tailored to delineate tree crowns and label high class membership pixels inside each object. In this scenario, RBF-SVMs produced the best species maps, correctly identifying 84.9% of crowns with hyperspectral data and 78.5% with simulated WV-3 data. The use of a reduced set of hyperspectral bands, which were selected with stepwise regression, did not significantly affect the classification accuracies but allowed us to depict the most important wavelengths to discriminate the species. These wavelengths were located around the green reflectance peak (550 nm), at the red absorption feature (650 nm) and in the SWIR range at 1200, 1700, 2100 and 2300 nm. These encouraging results suggest the feasibility of the proposed approach for mapping pioneering and climax tree species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Biome, highlighting its potential use in forest recovery and inventory initiatives.

ResumoTests in the space systems development life cycles are necessary to early verify requirements fulfillment, ensuring that the systems developed are correct. Nowadays, the efforts to develop miniaturized satellites and their test suite is increasing. Additionally, it is growing the initiatives is adopting MBSE (Model Based System Engineering) to automate the processes of: model design, simulation and model transformation. In MBSE development approach, models are the focus of the activities. The models describe requirements, functionalities and interfaces of a system, and their subsystems, considered here as input models. In the context of an Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS), the design engineers have to (i) generate models representing solar array, battery, voltage regulators, loads, etc., for implementation solutions, and (ii) provide a verification plan, derived from requirements, to ensure the correctness of the developed functionality. In this scenario, the following question raises: how to interconnect the input models with verification plans, developed solutions and test executions? This paper aims to describe the structure of an automated verification framework to nanosatellites EPS, using COTS (commercial-of-the-shelf) tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink, MS. Excel, and Arduino. We propose the models are as granular as in the verification plans (it is not possible to test internal behaviors from a black box artifact), so, each model represent an element in a unique file and a sequencer will integrate them, as a DSM (Design Structure Matrix) in Excel. In the context of the proposed framework, the subsystem verification enables three test configurations: fully simulated, fully simulated considering physical interface model, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL). One advantage of the proposed framework is to reuse models from the start of the mission development, providing the reuse of these models throughout the life cycle, minimizing costs. The paper shows also results of development of the framework using an EPS behavioral model.

ResumoIn this work we follow a series of papers on high-resolution observations of small-scale structures in the solar atmosphere (Balmaceda et al. 2009, 2010; Vargas Dominguez et al. 2011; Palacios et al. 2012; Domingo et al. 2012; Vargas Dominguez et al. 2015, Cabello et al., in prep), combining several multi-wavelength data series. These were acquired by both ground-based (SST) and space-borne (Hinode) instruments during the joint campaign of the Hinode Operation Program 14, in September 2007. Diffraction-limited SST data were taken in the G-band and G-cont, and were restored by the MFBD technique. Hinode instruments, on the other hand, provided multispectral data from SOT-FG in the CN band, and Mg I and Ca II lines, as well as from SOT-SP in the Fe I line. In this series of works we have thoroughly studied vortex flows and their statistical occurrences, horizontal velocity fields by means of Local Correlation Tracking (LCT), divergence and vorticity. Taking advantage of the high-cadence and high spatial resolution data, we have also studied bright point statistics and magnetic field intensification, highlighting the importance of the smallest-scale magnetic element observations.
