ResumoAssessing the persistent impacts of fragmentation on aboveground structure of tropical forests is essential to understanding the consequences of land use change for carbon storage and other ecosystem functions. We investigated the influence of edge distance and fragment size on canopy structure, aboveground woody biomass (AGB), and AGB turnover in the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazon, Brazil, after 22+ yr of fragment isolation, by combining canopy variables collected with portable canopy profiling lidar and airborne laser scanning surveys with long-term forest inventories. Forest height decreased by 30% at edges of large fragments (>10 ha) and interiors of small fragments (<3 ha). In larger fragments, canopy height was reduced up to 40 m from edges. Leaf area density profiles differed near edges: the density of understory vegetation was higher and midstory vegetation lower, consistent with canopy reorganization via increased regeneration of pioneers following post-fragmentation mortality of large trees. However, canopy openness and leaf area index remained similar to control plots throughout fragments, while canopy spatial heterogeneity was generally lower at edges. AGB stocks and fluxes were positively related to canopy height and negatively related to spatial heterogeneity. Other forest structure variables typically used to assess the ecological impacts of fragmentation (basal area, density of individuals, and density of pioneer trees) were also related to lidar-derived canopy surface variables. Canopy reorganization through the replacement of edge-sensitive species by disturbance-tolerant ones may have mitigated the biomass loss effects due to fragmentation observed in the earlier years of BDFFP. Lidar technology offered novel insights and observational scales for analysis of the ecological impacts of fragmentation on forest structure and function, specifically aboveground biomass storage.

ResumoThe data, information and knowledge on the tropical forest area and dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon remain contentious. Here we generated annual forest maps of the Brazilian Amazon for 2000-2017, which were then used to quantify the annual dynamics of forest area, deforestation, and reforestation. Our annual forest maps revealed ~15% more forest area but annual rates of deforestation twice as high as those from the official Brazilian forestry statistics (PRODES). Over 90% of deforested areas occurred within 5-km of those areas deforested before 2002, a strong indicator of the spatial expansion dynamics of anthropogenic deforestation. Annual forest loss areas were high in those drought years with large amounts of fire and active fire events occurred in ~70% of deforested areas. Forest loss was substantially reduced within protected areas. We also reported the annual reforested area, which offset annual deforestation by about 21%.

Resumohe disturbances of forest cover by processes like selective logging and forest fires are very common in tropical forest. These disturbances heavily affect forest functionalities, lead to a decrease of forest biomass and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. However, the quantification of the disturbance extend remains a challenging task because disturbed forest areas do not consist in a long-term conversion to another land use, but often undergo fast regrowth and thus are easily detectable only for a limited amount of time. We have applied a novel approach based on the ∆rNBR index, which maps the loss of forest canopy on a yearly basis by a multi-image analysis with cloud computing on Google Earth Engine. We have analysed 12 years of forest disturbances (2000-2011) over large area of interest (ca. 414,000 km2), defined by the intersection of the Mato Grosso State border and the Brazilian Amazon biome. We assessed the logging and fire intensity by applying a grid of 300 m × 300 m spatial resolution over the mapped disturbance pixels. In 2016, more than 220,000 km2 (53,3%) were covered by forest within the area of interest, thereof more than 38,000 km2 (17,3%) were disturbed by selective logging within the 12 years analysed, ranging from 1,819 km2 (2009) to 6,984 km2 (2005). The burned forest added up to 18,711 km2 (8,4%) during this period, the smallest forest area burned in 2001 (68 km2) the larges area in 2007 (10,258 km2).

ResumoThe objective of this paper is to present a method to assess the extent of annual land use/land cover in Brazil, South America. The proposed method applies the Linear Spectral Mixing Model (LSMM) to PROBA-V datasets to derive vegetation, soil and shade fraction images for global and regional analysis. We used 1 km composites of 10 days (S10-TOC - 10-daily global composites, Top-Of-Canopy) for the South America and 100 m composites of 5 days (S5-TOC - 5-daily global composites, Top-Of-Canopy) for the Mato Grosso State, Brazilian Amazon. Then we built the 1km and 100m composites corresponding to the three endmembers with the highest fraction values during the year 2015. In that manner we could detect and map the areas occupied by main crops in Brazil, during the 2015 year, using the vegetation fraction composites. Also, PROBA-V images were acquired in the dry season, on 21 June, 26 July and 11 August 2015 to show the potentiality of these images to assess the land cover changes due to deforestation and forest degradation by fire. The agricultural areas mapped using 1km dataset were compared with 100m results for the Mato Grosso State showing a difference of 12% (58,834 km2 and 66,490 km2 , respectively). The results are very important for the government and nongovernmental organizations for planning and management of the tropical environment.

ResumoThe joint and relative effects of future land-use and climate change on fire occurrence in the Amazon, as well its seasonal variation, are still poorly understood, despite its recognized importance. Using the maximum entropy method (MaxEnt), we combined regional land-use projections and climatic data from the CMIP5 multimodel ensemble to investigate the monthly probability of fire occurrence in the mid (2041-2070) and late (2071-2100) 21st century in the Brazilian Amazon. We found striking spatial variation in the fire relative probability (FRP) change along the months, with October showing the highest overall change. Considering climate only, the area with FRP >= 0.3 (a threshold chosen based on the literature) in October increases 6.9% by 2071-2100 compared to the baseline period under the representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 27.7% under the RCP 8.5. The best-case land-use scenario ("Sustainability") alone causes a 10.6% increase in the area with FRP >= 0.3, while the worse-case land-use scenario ("Fragmentation") causes a 73.2% increase. The optimistic climate-land-use projection (Sustainability and RCP 4.5) causes a 21.3% increase in the area with FRP >= 0.3 in October by 2071-2100 compared to the baseline period. In contrast, the most pessimistic climate-land-use projection (Fragmentation and RCP 8.5) causes a widespread increase in FRP (113.5% increase in the area with FRP >= 0.3), and prolongs the fire season, displacing its peak. Combining the Sustainability land-use and RCP 8.5 scenarios causes a 39.1% increase in the area with FRP >= 0.3. We conclude that avoiding the regress on land-use governance in the Brazilian Amazon (i.e., decrease in the extension and level of conservation of the protected areas, reduced environmental laws enforcement, extensive road paving, and increased deforestation) would substantially mitigate the effects of climate change on fire probability, even under the most pessimistic RCP 8.5 scenario.

ResumoForest degradation from either natural or anthropogenic drivers involves processes that change the capacity of the ecosystem to provide services. In Brazil, estimates of carbon emissions do not currently take into account emissions from forest degradation caused by fire or by selective logging. Here, we present a methodology to estimate aboveground biomass in forest degradedareas, that can be accounted to estimate carbon emissions. We explored a multi-scale and temporal approach involving Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and orbital images from Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor to estimate the aboveground biomass. Cross-validation results showed that 49% of the variation in biomass could be explained using this approach, with an estimation error 58 Mg ha(-1) (49.08%). Due to the difficulty in measuring biomass in tropical forests, the proposed methodology can be an alternative in future works to estimate aboveground biomass in order to improve the estimates of carbon emissions by the governmental organizations.

ResumoThe data, information and knowledge on the tropical forest area and its dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon remain contentious. We use time-series satellite images to quantify annual forest area, loss and gain in the Brazilian Amazon during 2000-2017. We find that forest area was -15% higher than the estimate by the official Brazilian forest dataset (PRODES), but annual forest-loss rates were twice the PRODES estimates (-0.027 x 10(6) km(2) yr(-1) during 2001-2016). Forest-loss rates increased again after 2013. The El Nino and drought year (2015/2016) drove large forest area loss. The cumulative forest-loss area within the protected areas (which include -50% of forests in the region) was -11% of the total forest-loss area, which highlights the roles of protected areas in forest conservation.

ResumoTropical seasonal biomes (TSBs), such as the savannas (Cerrado) and semi-arid woodlands (Caatinga) of Brazil, are vulnerable ecosystems to human-induced disturbances. Remote sensing can detect disturbances such as deforestation and fires, but the analysis of change detection in TSBs is affected by seasonal modifications in vegetation indices due to phenology. To reduce the effects of vegetation phenology on changes caused by deforestation and fires, we developed a novel object-based change detection method. The approach combines both the spatial and spectral domains of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), using a pair of Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Landsat-8 images acquired in 2015 and 2016. We used semivariogram indices (SIs) as spatial features and descriptive statistics as spectral features (SFs). We tested the performance of the method using three machine-learning algorithms: support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF). The results showed that the combination of spatial and spectral information improved change detection by correctly classifying areas with seasonal changes in NDVI caused by vegetation phenology and areas with NDVI changes caused by human-induced disturbances. The use of semivariogram indices reduced the effects of vegetation phenology on change detection. The performance of the classifiers was generally comparable, but the SVM presented the highest overall classification accuracy (92.27%) when using the hybrid set of NDVI-derived spectral-spatial features. From the vegetated areas, 18.71% of changes were caused by human-induced disturbances between 2015 and 2016. The method is particularly useful for TSBs where vegetation exhibits strong seasonality and regularly spaced time series of satellite images are difficult to obtain due to persistent cloud cover.
