ResumoOpen global forest cover data can be a critical component for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) policies. In this work, we determine the best threshold, compatible with the official Brazilian dataset, for establishing a forest mask cover within the Amazon basin for the year 2000 using the Tree Canopy Cover 2000 GFC product. We compared forest cover maps produced using several thresholds (10%, 30%, 50%, 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95%) with a forest cover map for the same year from the Brazilian Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Project (PRODES) data, produced by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). We also compared the forest cover classifications indicated by each of these maps to 2550 independently assessed Landsat pixels for the year 2000, providing an accuracy assessment for each of these map products. We found that thresholds of 80% and 85% best matched with the PRODES data. Consequently, we recommend using an 80% threshold for the Tree Canopy Cover 2000 data for assessing forest cover in the Amazon basin.

ResumoSecondary forests (SFs) are one of the major carbon sink in the Neotropics due to the rapid carbon assimilating in their aboveground biomass (AGB). However, the accurate contribution of the SFs to the carbon cycle is a great challenge because of the uncertainty in AGB estimates. In this context, the main objective of this work is to explore polarimetric Alos/Palsar-2 data from to model AGB in the SFs of the Central Amazon, Amazonas State. Forest inventory was conducted in 2014 with the measured of 23 field plots. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to select the best model by corrected AICw and validated by leave-one-out bootstrapping method. The best fitted model has six parameters and explained 65% of the aboveground biomass variability. The prediction error was calculated to be RMSEP = 8.8 ± 2.98 Mg.ha-1 (8.75%). The main polarimetric attributes in the model were those direct related to multiple scattering mechanisms as the Shannon Entropy and the volumetric mechanism of Bhattacharya decomposition; and those related to increase in double-bounce as the co-polarization ratio (VV/HH) resulted of soil-trunk interactions. Such models are intended to improve accuracy for mapping SFs AGB in often cloudy environments as in the Brazilian Amazon.

ResumoThe complexity of pixel composition of orbital images has been commonly referred to the spectral mixture problem. The acquisition of endmembers (pure pixels) direct from image under study is one of the most commonly employed approaches. However, it becomes limited in low or moderate spatial resolutions due to the lower probability of finding those pixels. In this way, this work proposes the combined use of images with different spatial resolutions to estimate the spectral responses of the endmembers in low spatial resolution image, from the obtained proportions derived from the spatial higher-resolution images. The proposed methodology was applied to products provided by PROBA-V satellite with spatial resolution of 100 m and 1 km in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso state. Initially, the fraction images (proportions) were generated from the 100 m dataset using the endmembers selected directly in the image, considering the higher probability of finding pure pixels in such images. Following the spectral responses of the endmembers in 1 km were estimated by multiple linear regression, using the proportions of the endmembers in the pixels derived from 100 m images. For the evaluation, the endmembers fraction images were compared and field data was used. These analyses indicated that the spectral responses estimated allowed to improve the results with regard to error, to variability, and to the identification of endmembers proportions, considering that inadequate choice of pixels considered as pure in low spatial resolution images can affect the quality of the fraction images for operational use.

ResumoSecondary forests (SF) are important carbon sinks, removing CO2 from the atmosphere through the photosynthesis process and storing photosynthates in their aboveground live biomass (AGB). This process occurring at large-scales partially counteracts C emissions from land-use change, playing, hence, an important role in the global carbon cycle. The absorption rates of carbon in these forests depend on forest physiology, controlled by environmental and climatic conditions, as well as on the past land use, which is rarely considered for retrieving AGB from remotely sensed data. In this context, the main goal of this study is to evaluate the potential of polarimetric (quad-pol) ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data for estimating AGB in a SF area. Land-use was assessed through Landsat time-series to extract the SF age, period of active land-use (PALU), and frequency of clear cuts (FC) to randomly select the SF plots. A chronosequence of 42 SF plots ranging 328 years (20 ha) near the Tapajós National Forest in Pará state was surveyed to quantifying AGB growth. The quad-pol data was explored by testing two regression methods, including non-linear (NL) and multiple linear regression models (MLR).We also evaluated the influence of the past land-use in the retrieving AGB through correlation analysis. The results showed that the biophysical variables were positively correlated with the volumetric scattering, meaning that SF areas presented greater volumetric scattering contribution with increasing forest age. Mean diameter, mean tree height, basal area, species density, and AGB were significant and had the highest Pearson coefficients with the Cloude decomposition (3), which in turn, refers to the volumetric contribution backscattering from cross-polarization (HV) ( = 0.570.66, p-value < 0.001). On the other hand, the historical use (PALU and FC) showed the highest correlation with angular decompositions, being the Touzi target phase angle the highest correlation (Fs) ( = 0.37 and = 0.38, respectively). The combination of multiple prediction variables with MLR improved the AGB estimation by 70% comparing to the NL model (R2 adj. = 0.51; RMSE = 38.7 Mg ha􀀀1) bias = 2.1 37.9 Mg ha􀀀1 by incorporate the angular decompositions, related to historical use, and the contribution volumetric scattering, related to forest structure, in the model. The MLR uses six variables, whose selected polarimetric attributes were strongly related with different structural parameters such as the mean forest diameter, basal area, and the mean forest tree height, and not with the AGB as was expected. The uncertainty was estimated to be 18.6% considered all methodological steps of the MLR model. This approach helped us to better understand the relationship between parameters derived from SAR data and the forest structure and its relation to the growth of the secondary forest after deforestation events.

ResumoTropical secondary vegetation is of particular interest as carbon sinks, potential lands for agriculture and livestock expansion, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services. Until mid-2000s estimates of secondary vegetation in the Brazilian Amazon indicated a progressive increase of this cover, however after 2010, only 1197 km 2 of additional secondary vegetation were generated, while 42,040 km 2 were converted into other land-covers. Meanwhile, deforestation rates progressively decreased to be around 6000 km 2 in contrast to the peak of 27,772 km 2 in 2004, what suggests that changes in land-cover dynamics with respect to deforestation may be related to a reduction in secondary vegetation. Hence, in this paper, we work with the hypothesis that, in a context of decreasing deforestation rates, the historic pattern of progressive accumulation of secondary vegetation in the Brazilian Amazon changed as a consequence of the re-conversion of this cover, as well as other land-covers relevant in the process of regeneration, into different land-covers that expanded in this period. Our focus was then to investigate, on a regional scale, the spatiotemporal patterns of secondary vegetation with respect to different land-covers in Pará based on (i) a quantitative analysis of transitions between land-covers, and (ii) on clustering patterns of secondary vegetation cover and their relations with clustering patterns of pastures, small-scale and industrial agriculture. We found that more secondary vegetation was converted into land-covers that expanded in the period i.e. clean pasture, mechanized agriculture, and palm oil, with secondary vegetation and land-covers important for regeneration (i.e. small-scale agriculture and regeneration with pasture) experiencing an overall reduction and contributing less to the concentration of secondary vegetation after 2010. Clusters of high values (hotspots) of secondary vegetation prevailed in the north, while clusters of low values (cold spots) prevailed in the south of Pará a pattern that is explained by different histories of occupation and deforestation dynamics, as well as distinct regional land dynamics in the past decade. As a first contribution to understanding the dynamics of secondary vegetation in a context of decreasing deforestation rates, our results show that the increased pressure to halt deforestation had effects over the dynamics of this land-cover, as well as over land-covers relevant to regeneration.

ResumoThe paradox between environmental conservation and economic development is a challenge for Brazil, where there is a complex and dynamic agricultural scenario. This reinforces the need for effective methods for the detailed mapping of agriculture. In this work, we employed land surface phenological metrics derived from dense satellite image time series to classify agricultural land in the Cerrado biome. We used all available Landsat images between April 2013 and April 2017, applying a weighted ensemble of Radial Basis Function (RBF) convolution filters as a kernel smoother to fill data gaps such as cloud cover and Scan Line Corrector (SLC)-off data. Through this approach, we created a dense Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) data cube with an 8-day temporal resolution and derived phenometrics for a Random Forest (RF) classification. We used a hierarchical classification with four levels, from land cover to crop rotation classes. Most of the classes showed accuracies higher than 90%. Single crop and Non-commercial crop classes presented lower accuracies. However, we showed that phenometrics derived from dense Landsat-like image time series, in a hierarchical classification scheme, has a great potential for detailed agricultural mapping. The results are promising and show that the method is consistent and robust, being applicable to mapping agricultural land throughout the entire Cerrado.

ResumoAccurate estimates of aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical forests are critical for supporting strategies of ecosystem functioning conservation and climate change mitigation. However, such estimates at regional and local scales are still highly uncertain. Airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) can characterize the structural and functional diversity of forests with high accuracy at a sub-meter resolution, and potentially improve the AGB estimations. In this study, we compared the ability of different data sources (airborne LiDAR and HSI, and their combination) and regression methods (linear model - LM, linear model with ridge regularization - LMR, Support Vector Regression - SVR, Random Forest - RF, Stochastic Gradient Boosting - SGB, and Cubist - CB) to improve AGB predictions in the Brazilian Amazon. We used georeferenced inventory data from 132 sample plots to obtain a reference field AGB and calculated 333 metrics (45 from LiDAR and 288 from HSI) that could be used as predictors for statistical AGB models. We submitted the metrics to a correlation filtering followed by a feature selection procedure (recursive feature elimination) to optimize the performance of the models and to reduce their complexity. Results showed that both LiDAR and HSI data used alone provided relatively high accurate models if adequate metrics and algorithms are chosen (RMSE = 67.6 Mg.ha−1 , RMSE% = 36%, R2 = 0.58, for the best LiDAR model; RMSE = 68.1 Mg.ha−1 , RMSE % = 36%, R2 = 0.58, for the best HSI model). However, HSI-only models required more metrics (512) than LiDAR-only models (25). Models combining metrics from both datasets resulted in more accurate AGB estimates, regardless of the regression method (RMSE = 57.7 Mg.ha−1 , RMSE% = 31%, R2 = 0.70, for the best model). The most important LiDAR metrics for estimating AGB were related to the upper canopy cover and tree height percentiles, while the most important HSI metrics were associated with the near infrared and shortwave infrared spectral regions, particularly the leaf/canopy water and lignin-cellulose absorption bands. Finally, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the remote sensing data source (LiDAR, HSI, or their combination) had a greater effect size than the regression algorithms. Thus, no single algorithm outperformed the others, although the LM method was less suitable when applied to the HSI and hybrid datasets. Results show that the synergistic use of LiDAR and hyperspectral data has great potential for improving the accuracy of the biomass estimates in the Brazilian Amazon.

Basic sanitation
ResumoEnvironmental sanitation is one of the main causing factors of water use conflicts at the Rio Grande Basin, Brazil. The precariousness of sanitation conditions in the area degrades water resources and affects the health and quality of life of the local population, as well as regional economic development. In this context, this study aims to assess the environmental sanitation sustainability condition in two Rio Grande Basin (BHRG) water management units. An evaluation index system grouped into three subsystems (economic, social and environmental) was applied to this end, carried out for the years of 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. The indicator and subsystem weights were based on the Entropy Information concept. The empirical results of this study indicated unacceptable environmental sanitation sustainability conditions for both assessed water management units. This study, thus, demonstrates the impacts of economic development and environmental quality on the human subsystem. In addition, it provides theoretical implications and practical approaches for assessing sanitation conditions under the sustainable development scenario, and may assist in planning actions and decision-making processes to meet the goals of Objective for Sustainable Development 6 stipulated for 2030 by the United Nations.
