ResumoUnmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been advancing in precision and cost -benefit for remote sensing studies, including height and biomass estimations. This article presents a preliminary experiment to explore UAV photogrammetry to estimate canopy height in savanna and grassland phytophysiognomies in the Brazilian Cerrado biome. For this purpose, it was generated dense cloud points to obtain digital terrain and surface models used to calculate the canopy height. The spatial distribution of canopy height ranged from 0 to 4 meters, in which the most values were under 50 cm, commonly found in grasslands and observed in vegetation regrowth of post -fire event in savanna areas .

ResumoUsing satellite remote-sensing is a useful approach for agriculture to monitor plant and soil conditions and provide decision-making support to farmers. Recently, several types of tools and indices by the satellite remote-sensing have been developed for monitoring drought stress, changes in land uses, and crop-soil water relations. Although these techniques are powerful tools, especially in developing countries and regions where precise data of crop evaluation and yield statistics are not accessible, it is quite difficult for beginners to select the most suitable tool or index for their objectives. Major difficulties are in the specificity of the terminology, differences among the sensors (e.g., active vs. passive sensors), interpretation of imaginary data, and multidisciplinary topics. This work offers non-expert readers basic knowledge of remote-sensing use in agriculture, presenting advancements in the field and future insights. We review different sensors that are frequently used, such as optical sensors and synthetic aperture radar, as well as the following different purposes for using remote-sensing in agriculture: drought stress detection, monitoring land use in tropical regions (e.g., deforestation), and estimating water balance evapotranspiration in emerging and developing countries. Additionally, the integrated approach of remote-sensing data into the crop simulation model, which can provide a more holistic view of the plant and field status over cropping season, is described for the field-based studies.

ResumoThe ongoing deforestation process in Amazonia has led to intensified forest fires in the region, particularly in Brazil, after more than a decade of effective forest conservation policy. This study aims to investigate the recovery of two mature sub-montane ombrophile Amazonian forests affected by fire in terms of energy, water and carbon fluxes utilizing remote sensing (MODIS) and climate reanalysis data (GLDAS). These two forest plots, mainly composed of Manilkara spp. (Maçaranduba), Protium spp. (Breu) (∼30 m), Bertholletia excelsa (Castanheira) and Dinizia excelsa Ducke (Angelim-Pedra) (∼50 m), occupy areas of 100.5 and 122.1 km2 and were subject to fire on the same day, on September 12, 2010. The fire significantly increased land surface temperature (0.8°C) and air temperature (1.2°C) in the forests over a 3 years interval. However, the forests showed an ability to recover their original states in terms of coupling between the carbon and water cycles comparing the 3-year periods before and after the fires. Results from a wavelet analysis showed an intensification in annual and seasonal fluctuations, and in some cases (e.g., daily net radiation and evapotrasnspiration) sub-annual fluctuation. We interpreted these changes to be consistent with overall intensification of the coupling of energy balance components and drivers imposed by climate and solar cycle seasonality, as well as faster time scale changes, consistent with a shift toward greater forest openness and consequent reduction in the interception of incoming solar radiation by the canopy.

ResumoSecondary forests (SFs) are one of the major carbons sinks in the Neotropics due to the rapid carbon assimilation in their above-ground biomass (AGB). However, the accurate contribution of SFs to the carbon cycle is a great challenge because of the uncertainty in AGB estimates. In this context, the main objective of this study is to explore full polarimetric Advanced Land Observing Satellite/Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (ALOS/PALSAR-2) data to model SFs AGB in the Central Amazon. We carried out the forest inventory in 2014, measuring 23 field plots. Supplementary land-use classification history was used to create 120 additional independent sample plots by adjusting growth curves using SFs age and previous land-use intensity from field plots and literature database. Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) analysis was performed to select the best model by corrected weighted Akaike Information Criterion (AICw) and validated by the leave-one-out bootstrapping method. The best-fitted model has six parameters and explained 65% of the above-ground biomass variability. The prediction error was of Root Mean Square Error of the Prediction (RMSEP) = 8.8 ± 3.0 tonnes ha−1 (8.8%). The most explanatory variables for modelling secondary forest AGB were those that result from multiple scattering (Shannon Entropy), volumetric scattering (Bhattacharya decomposition), and double-bounce scattering (ratio VV/HH, vertically transmitted and received polarization/horizontally transmitted and received polarization). Including past-use of SF areas in the model with the Landsat time series classification, as the frequency of clear cuts and the number of years of active land-use before abandonment, the MLR has increased by 10%, achieving 71% of the variability explained by the model. The uncertainty report showed that ground truth AGB estimation (inventory, allometry, and plot expansion factors) might represent 50% of the errors in the modelling estimation. In contrast, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) inversion models (SAR error and regression) have achieved 20%. The results showed that additional information on secondary forest land-use history could improve the performance of AGB recovery models, as well as can be used to expand the sampling units on tropical forests.

ResumoThe Amazon region of Brazil is a vitally important region for water and carbon cycling both for the region and the globe. This region is experiencing the impacts of global climate change as well as local land cover changes. Here, we investigated water and carbon estimates and related remotely sensed variables from both MODIS satellite and the Noah-MP land surface model for 3 years (20152017) in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Land surface temperature agrees well between MODIS and the model, while the leaf area index (LAI) is higher in the model simulations. The monthly evapotranspiration (ET) from MODIS (MOD16A2) and gross primary productivity (GPP, MOD17A2) were lower than, but well correlated with, the model simulations. A noticeable exception was in the Broadleaf Forest class, which accounts for approximately 50% of the land cover in the state, where the modeled LAI was out of phase with the satellite observations, resulting in significantly poorer performance in the water and carbon fluxes for that land cover class. In addition, we investigated the sensitivity of the ET and GPP to precipitation forcing. The modeled ET relationships show correlations of approximately 0.6 for all classes (Broadleaf Forest being the exception, 0.24), while the MODIS shows reduced values averaging about 0.5 (Broadleaf Forest = 0.03). The slopes of the relationships illustrated the same sensitivity between MODIS and Noah-MP with the exception of Grasslands and Open Shrublands. The GPP relationships with precipitation show lower correlations across all land cover types for both MODIS and Noah-MP, with the slopes being significantly different for the Open Shrublands and Broadleaf Forest classes. In each of these classes, the Noah-MP simulations resulted in increased sensitivity to precipitation than was observed in the MODIS products. We highlight that this comparison is essential for increasing our understanding of how these different sources estimate water and carbon cycling and can be utilized for assessing the impacts of climate and land cover change in the region.

ResumoThe Brazilian Amazon rainforest deforestation rate increased by 34.1% between 2018 and 2019, reaching even protected areas, such as Indigenous Lands (ILs). In particular, Ituna/Itatá IL, in the state of Pará, restricted to the study of Igarapé Ipiaçava isolated indigenous people, has experienced a 654% deforestation rate increase during the same period. The mainstream deforestation analysis explains it as a struggle between conservation and development, which is commonly typified by large-scale producers who replace natural vegetation with pasturelands and crop fields, especially in agricultural frontiers, as ILs are barriers for protecting forests. In this work, we expose a devised and underlying deforestation process in Ituna/Itatá, and argue that land grabbers and squatters have promoted this boom by moving in, clearing, subdividing, and occupying this IL as if it were real estate. Such process mischaracterizes it and obstructs the demarcation process, in the expectation of a land regularization law that authenticates selling the land in the future. This process seems to be promoted by the Brazilian Federal Government rhetoric and mediated by local politicians, somewhat passing on the message of feeble repression against invasions of public lands. Our results evidence a process of IL mischaracterization, with primary forests converted to pasturelands, and a 1994.30 ton year−1 increase of annual estimates of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) associated with fires. Also, 94% of Ituna/Itatá has been claimed in the Brazilian Rural Environmental Registry, resembling a city allotment process, with a road network conditioning and suggesting axes of deforestation expansion. Measures to prevent deforestation are vital not only to sustain land demarcation processes but also to stop it from spreading to other ILs.

ResumoIn this article, we propose a novel approach for assessing the effects of sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean Sea on the Choco low-level jet (CJ) intensity over the 1900−2015 period that involved defining the interbasin gradient index (IGR) between these 2 oceanic basins. We also studied the effects on rainfall in northwestern South America and Central America in the high CJ season during September−November (SON). Wavelet coherence analysis showed high consistency between CJ and IGR on an interannual scale of 2− 8 yr. Precipitation increased over central, western, and northern Colombia and most of Central America during strong CJ (SCJ) and decreased during weak CJ (WCJ) events, which occurred, respectively, in the negative IGR (NIGR) and positive IGR (PIGR) phases. NIGR is associated with anomalous cooling in the tropical Pacific and warming in the equatorial Atlantic; opposite patterns are observed during PIGR. Also, the CJ and the Caribbean low-level jet (CLLJ) showed reversed intensities such that as one strengthened, the other weakened and vice versa. Our results indicate that the low-frequency SST anomalies in the North Atlantic affect the IGR and low-level jet intensities associated with changes in large-scale circulation modulated by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). Indeed, positive precipitation anomalies during the SCJ under NIGR were more accentuated and extensive in the warm AMO (WAMO) than in the cold AMO (CAMO) phase. Conversely, negative precipitation anomalies during WCJ under PIGR were more accentuated and extensive in the CAMO than in the WAMO.

ResumoFollowing the boom of soybean production from 2000 to 2006 in the Santarém region of the Brazilian Amazon, the mechanized agricultural area remained stable, unlike other regions. Deforestation was controlled, but this initial expansion led to the restructuring of the agrarian space in the region. Given this scenario, we aimed to understand the mechanized agricultural expansion effects in the region by comparing the periods 19992007 and 20072015. Our hypothesis was that it impacted heterogeneous actors and land tenure categories. We combined multi-temporal land change maps derived from remote sensing to land tenure information to evaluate how land change transitions differed over time, both in public (traditional and sustainable use official settlements) and private areas. In private areas, we observed a 12% reduction in forest cover in 19992007 and a 2.5% reduction in 20072015. In sustainable use settlements, forest loss was only 3% and 2% in each period, respectively. Mechanized agriculture occupied areas of family farming (42%), secondary vegetation (20%), pasture (20%), and forest areas (18%). Family farming lost most of the area to other uses. Within settlements, the area of family farming increased by 50% at the expense of the forest area. We conclude that the rise and fall of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon hide multiple social and territorial processes. Understanding such dynamics is critical for establishing measures toward a sustainable future.

ResumoThis study provides a detailed analysis of the influence of atmospheric stratification on the flow dynamics above and within a dense forest for a 19-days campaign at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) site. Observations taken at seven levels within and above the forest along an 81-meter and a 325-meter towers allow a unique investigation of the vertical evolution of the turbulent field in the roughness sublayer and in the surface layer above it. Five different stability classes were defined on the basis of the behavior of turbulent heat, momentum and CO2 fluxes and variance ratio as a function of h/L stability parameter (where h is the canopy height and L is the Obukhov length). The novelty is the identification of a super-stable (SS) regime (h/L>3) characterized by extremely low wind speeds, the almost completely suppression of turbulence and a clear dominance of submeso motions both above and within the forest. The obtained data classification was used to study the influence of atmospheric stratification on the vertical profiles of turbulent statistics. The spectral characteristics of coherent structures and of submeso motions (that may influence the energy and mass exchange above the Amazon forest) have been analyzed by wavelet analyses. The role of the main structures in momentum, heat and CO2 transport at the different levels inside and above the forest and in different diabatic conditions was thoroughly investigated through multiresolution and quadrant analyses. In unstable and neutral stability, the flow above the canopy appears modulated by ejections, whereas downward and intermittent sweeps dominate the transport inside the canopy. In the roughness sublayer (z £ 2h) the coherent structures dominating the transport within and above the canopy have a characteristic temporal scale of about 100 sec, whereas above this layer the transport is mainly driven by larger scale convection (temporal scale of about 15 min). In stable conditions the height of roughness sublayer progressively decreases with increasing stability reaching the minimum value (z<1.35h) in the SS regime. Above the canopy the flow is clearly dominated by ejections but characterized by a higher intermittency mainly in SS conditions. On the other hand, the rapid shear stress absorption in the highest part of the vegetation produces a less clear dominance of sweeps and a less defined role of odd and even quadrants inside the canopy in the transport of momentum, heat and CO2. In the weakly stable regime (0.15<h/L<1) transport is dominated in the roughness sublayer by canopy coherent structures with a characteristic temporal scale of about 60 sec. As stability increases the influence of low-frequency (submeso) processes, with a temporal scale of 20-30 min, on flow dynamics progressively increases and becomes dominant in the SS regime where the buoyancy strongly dampens or completely inhibits turbulent structures whereas the large-scale oscillations propagate in the interior of the canopy modulating the heat and CO2 transport.
