ResumoContinuous monitoring of forest disturbance on tropical forests is a fundamental tool to support proactive preservation actions and to stop further destruction of native vegetation. Currently most of the monitoring systems in operation are based on optical imagery, and thus are flaw-prone on areas with frequent cloud cover. As this, several Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-based systems have been developed recently, aiming all-weather disturbance detection. This article presents the main aspects and the results of the first year of operation of the SAR based Near Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (DETER-R), an automated deforestation detection system focused on the Brazilian Amazon. DETER-R uses the Google Earth Engine platform to preprocess and analyze Sentinel-1 SAR time series. New images are treated and analyzed daily. After the automated analysis, the system vectorizes clusters of deforested pixels and sends the corresponding polygons to the environmental enforcement agency. After 12 months of operational life, the system has produced 88,572 forest disturbance warnings. Human validation of the warning polygons showed a extremely low rate of misdetections, with less than 0.2% of the detected area corresponding to false positives. During the first year of operation, DETER-R provided 33,234 warnings of interest to national monitoring agencies which were not detected by its optical counterpart DETER in the same period, corresponding to an area of 105,238.5 ha, or approximately 5% of the total detections. During the rainy season, the rate of additional detections increased as expected, reaching 8.1%.

ResumoA maior parte da população da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) são abastecidas de água por um sistema integrado composto por Cantareira, Alto Tietê, Guarapiranga, Cotia, Rio Grande, Rio Claro e São Lourenço. Entretanto, a Cantareira (formado por 5 reservatórios: Jaguari-Jacareí, Cachoeira, Atibainha, Paiva Castro e Águas Claras) é o maior reservatório de água da RMSP, e abastece cerca de 8 milhões de pessoas. Objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as condições atmosféricas de grande escala e oceânicas de Pacífico e Atlântico que favoreceram a ocorrência da seca no Sudeste do Brasil no trimestre janeiro-fevereiro-março de 2021, através de análise da circulação em baixa e alta troposfera, precipitação e temperatura da superfície do mar. Os resultados preliminares indicam que esta seca esteve associada com uma circulação atmosférica anômala em altos e baixos níveis, de tipo bloqueio, sobre a região leste do Oceano Pacífico, aproximadamente entre 150W-100W e 30S-60S, e a propagação anômala de ondas de Rossby desde as latitudes medias para a região equatorial. Resultados preliminares também indicam esta circulação anômala esteve relacionada com a fase negativa do ENSO (La Niña).

ResumoObservations of the vertical structure of the turbulent flow in different stability regimes above and within the Amazon Forest at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) site have been presented in Part I. Here, the influence of stability on the inception and development of coherent structures is investigated. According to the mixing-layer analogy the coherent vortices that dominate the turbulent flows at the canopy-atmosphere interface are generated by hydrodynamical instabilities triggered by an inflection in the vertical profile of the mean wind speed at or near the canopy top. The coherent motions time, Tpeak and separation length scale, Λ, depend on the shear length scale, Ls, close to the canopy top. The present analysis studies the characteristics of Ls, Tpeak and Λ in the five stability regimes defined in Part I. The behaviour of Ls with stability is evaluated and parameterized. Ls increases with decreasing stability, presenting two asymptotes for large unstable and stable stratification and a linear behaviour close to neutral stratification. Coherent structures and their timescale are detected with an original method based on the autocorrelation functions of 5-min subsets of turbulent quantities. The vertical time scale is larger in neutral conditions and decreases for both increasing and decreasing stability. At the canopy top the separation length scale presents a linear dependence on Ls, whose slope is maximum in neutral conditions and decreases departing from neutrality. An original parameterization of the dependence of this slope on h/L, where h is the canopy height and L is the Obukhov length, is shown. Combining the parameterizations, the dependence of the separation length scale is finally presented. Λ has a maximum for slightly unstable conditions, linearly decreases towards neutral and weakly stable stratifications and then it tends to zero for very intense unstable and stable stratifications.

ResumoUnderstanding the processes that govern the mixing and transport of scalars within and above the Amazon Forest is of great importance for many environmental applications. The impact of atmospheric stability on the roughness sublayer (RSL) as well as the influence on it by the processes in the overlying atmosphere are investigated using measurements collected at the Atmospheric Tall Tower Observatory. Five different stabilities are defined according to the turbulent fluxes behaviour. Ejections dominate the transport in the RSL. In near neutral and unstable conditions coherent structures propagate up to 23 times the canopy height (h) and intermittently penetrate in the lowest part of the forest where sweeps drive the transport processes. In the unstable regime a weakening of the wind inflection at the canopy top and a transition to a convective regime above z = 2 h are observed. In stable conditions three regimes were defined characterised by a progressive lowering of the RSL and the weakening of the mixing-layer type coherent structures. In the weakly stable regime the intense momentum and scalar fluxes appear driven by the coherent structures being able to penetrate inside the canopy intermittently coupling the flow above and within the forest. The very stable regime is characterized by weak winds, a weakening of coherent structures and a decrease of the turbulent fluxes inhibited by buoyancy. The definition of a super stable regime allowed the identification of a peculiar condition characterized by low-wind and weak coherent structures confined close to the canopy top and producing negligible transport. Submeso motions dominate the flow dynamics in this regime both above and inside the RSL. Multiresolution analysis highlights the ability of submeso motions to propagate inside the canopy and to modulate the exchange, particularly of scalars, fully driving the large positive CO2 flux observed inside the forest in the super stable regime.

ResumoThe South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) is an atmospheric system occurring in austral summer on the South America continent and sometimes extending over the adjacent South Atlantic. It is characterized by a persistent and very large, northwest-southeast-oriented, cloud band. Its presence over the ocean causes sea surface cooling that some past studies indicated as being produced by a decrease of incoming solar heat fux induced by the extensive cloud cover. Here we investigate oceanatmosphere interaction processes in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA) during SACZ oceanic episodes, as well as the resulting modulations occurring in the oceanic mixed layer and their possible feedbacks on the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Our main interests and novel results are on verifying how the oceanic SACZ acts on dynamic and thermodynamic mechanisms and contributes to the sea surface thermal balance in that region. In our oceanic SACZ episodes simulations we confrm an ocean surface cooling. Model results indicate that surface atmospheric circulation and the presence of an extensive cloud cover band over the SWA promote sea surface cooling via a combined efect of dynamic and thermodynamic mechanisms, which are of the same order of magnitude. The sea surface temperature (SST) decreases in regions underneath oceanic SACZ positions, near Southeast Brazilian coast, in the South Brazil Bight (SBB) and ofshore. This cooling is the result of a complex combination of factors caused by the decrease of solar shortwave radiation reaching the sea surface and the reduction of horizontal heat advection in the Brazil Current (BC) region. The weakened southward BC and adjacent ofshore region heat advection seems to be associated with the surface atmospheric circulation caused by oceanic SACZ episodes, which rotate the surface wind and strengthen cyclonic oceanic mesoscale eddy. Another singular feature found in this study is the presence of an atmospheric cyclonic vortex Southwest of the SACZ (CVSS), both at the surface and aloft at 850 hPa near 24°S and 45°W. The CVSS induces an SST decrease southwestward from the SACZ position by inducing divergent Ekman transport and consequent ofshore upwelling. This shows that the dynamical efects of atmospheric surface circulation associated with the oceanic SACZ are not restricted only to the region underneath the cloud band, but that they extend southwestward where the CVSS presence supports the oceanic SACZ convective activity and concomitantly modifes the ocean dynamics. Therefore, the changes produced in the oceanic dynamics by these SACZ events may be important to many areas of scientifc and applied climate research. For example, episodes of oceanic SACZ may infuence the pathways of pollutants as well as fsh larvae dispersion in the region.

ResumoDuring the last quarter of 2019, the beaches, mangroves, and estuaries of Northeast Brazil received an unprecedented volume of crude oil from the sea, which became the worst environmental disaster ever to reach the Brazilian coast. The oil, having reached the shores completely unnoticed, left both society and government agents completely clueless on (i) where the oil was coming from; (ii) how much oil was still in the ocean to reach the shorelines; and (iii) which beaches were going to be affected next! By exploring remote sensing data and ocean numerical modeling, along with oil dispersion chemistry on sea water, this study investigates the possible origin and path of the spill and whether it could have been detected from space. The oil dispersion modeling simulations performed for this investigation revealed a possible region and timing of the oil spill, also indicating the likelihood of it being advected toward the shoreline under the ocean surface.

ResumoO Laboratório de Instrumentação para Sistemas Aquáticos (LabISA) está desenvolvendo um sistema modular para monitoramento contínuo de sistemas aquáticos continentais por sensoriamento remoto, denominado MAPAQUALI. O sistema se propõe a gerar e disponibilizar séries temporais da distribuição espacial de parâmetros de qualidade de água: Clorofila-a, Cianobactérias, Total de Sólidos Suspensos, Matéria Orgânica Colorida Dissolvida (CDOM), campo de luz subaquático, alertas de eventos de florações (em especial cianobactérias), entre outros. As atividades desenvolvidas durante o período de iniciação científica constaram-se de: desenvolver, testar, validar e documentar, em linguagem Python, rotinas para gerenciamento da base de dados e de algoritmos estimadores de parâmetros indicadores de qualidade de água a serem integrados na plataforma MAPAQUALI. Estes desenvolvimentos foram acompanhados por alunos de pós-graduação do LabISA. As ferramentas utilizadas foram Plataforma VSCode e o Qgis, e as seguintes bibliotecas: numpy, pandas, gdal, rasterio, sklearn, joblib, Fiona. Foram desenvolvidos algoritmos para mapeamento de Total de Sólidos Suspensos e fração inorgânica (TSS, TSI), profundidade Secchi e coeficiente de atenuação difusa (Kd). O desenvolvimento de TSS, TSI e Secchi foram feitos a partir de equações desenvolvidas em teses e dissertações. Já para rotina de Kd foi feita uma portabilidade da linguagem R para Python. Todas estas rotinas, após validação dos resultados gerados, foram integradas a plataforma MAPAQUALI. Além do desenvolvimento dos algoritmos, participei da organização e inserção de dados brutos na base de dados do LabISA e atualização do site do laboratório. Durante este período de iniciação cientifica tive oportunidade de conhecer várias ferramentas de suporte a desenvolvimento de códigos. Avalio que este período contribuiu de forma significativa para minha formação.

ResumoConstructing multi-source satellite-derived water quality (WQ) products in inland and nearshore coastal waters from the past, present, and future missions is a long-standing challenge. Despite inherent differences in sensors spectral capability, spatial sampling, and radiometric performance, research efforts focused on formulating, implementing, and validating universal WQ algorithms continue to evolve. This research extends a recently developed machine-learning (ML) model, i.e., Mixture Density Networks (MDNs) (Pahlevan et al., 2020; Smith et al., 2021), to the inverse problem of simultaneously retrieving WQ indicators, including chlorophyll-a (Chla), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and the absorption by Colored Dissolved Organic Matter at 440 nm (acdom(440)), across a wide array of aquatic ecosystems. We use a database of in situ measurements to train and optimize MDN models developed for the relevant spectral measurements (400800 nm) of the Operational Land Imager (OLI), MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI), and Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) aboard the Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3 missions, respectively. Our two performance assessment approaches, namely hold-out and leave-one-out, suggest significant, albeit varying degrees of improvements with respect to second-best algorithms, depending on the sensor and WQ indicator (e.g., 68%, 75%, 117% improvements based on the hold-out method for Chla, TSS, and acdom(440), respectively from MSI-like spectra). Using these two assessment methods, we provide theoretical upper and lower bounds on model performance when evaluating similar and/or out-of-sample datasets. To evaluate multi-mission product consistency across broad spatial scales, map products are demonstrated for three near-concurrent OLI, MSI, and OLCI acquisitions. Overall, estimated TSS and acdom(440) from these three missions are consistent within the uncertainty of the model, but Chla maps from MSI and OLCI achieve greater accuracy than those from OLI. By applying two different atmospheric correction processors to OLI and MSI images, we also conduct matchup analyses to quantify the sensitivity of the MDN model and best-practice algorithms to uncertainties in reflectance products. Our model is less or equally sensitive to these uncertainties compared to other algorithms. Recognizing their uncertainties, MDN models can be applied as a global algorithm to enable harmonized retrievals of Chla, TSS, and acdom(440) in various aquatic ecosystems from multi-source satellite imagery. Local and/or regional ML models tuned with an apt data distribution (e.g., a subset of our dataset) should nevertheless be expected to outperform our global model.

ResumoEste trabalho tem como objetivo identificar melhores meios de dar continuidade na divulgação de produções científicas e tecnológicas desenvolvidas nas diversas áreas que integram a Ciências da Terra no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, assim como tudo que engloba a difusão das informações institucionais relevantes ao público geral. Com o crescente uso das mídias sociais, é notória a necessidade de fazer-se presente nessas plataformas, buscando maneiras mais eficazes de capturar a atenção do público-alvo e incentivar o interesse da população em assuntos ligados à ciência, tecnologia e inovação, valorizando, principalmente, a produção nacional. Devido às constantes mudanças do mundo digital, as atividades desenvolvidas nesse projeto necessitam de um contínuo aprimoramento e atualização. Inicialmente, uma das principais tarefas foi a construção de uma imagem consolidada e de uma identidade visual para a Divisão de Impacto, Adaptação e Vulnerabilidade (DIIAV) da CGCT, especialmente no Instagram, através de um layout padrão para determinado assunto, dividindo-os entre: notícias, eventos, artigos e outros. Através dos editores de imagem como Canva e Figma, plataformas acessíveis e gratuitas para design gráfico, foram desenvolvidos novos ícones e modelos de postagens para um visual mais estruturado dos portais. Além disso, foi selecionada uma cartelas de cores que proporcionam uma aparência uniformizada e agradável, a fim de padronizar o mural de postagens. De maneira paralela, em parceria com o grupo de comunicação já existente, fizemos o mesmo com o Projeto Nexus, desenvolvido por pesquisadores integrantes da DIIAV/CGCT. Por fim, o intuito é melhorar o engajamento e fortalecer o material de qualidade e o conteúdo exibido nas plataformas, levando para a comunidade interna e externa, de maneira simples e eficiente, informações sobre os mais diversos temas ligados à CGCT.

False controversies in science
ResumoFake controversies have influenced policy making on health and environmental issues for decades, resulting in major implementation setbacks worldwide. As a case study, in this paper we examine fake controversies produced by a small group of active Brazilian researchers that have seriously impacted environmental conservation, particularly in issues related to deforestation and climate change. Based on the literature, we develop a typology of strategies deployed in fake controversies, which include manufacturing uncertainty, misusing scientific credentials, and disregarding scientific literature. Afterwards, we examine the influence of this group of contrarians at the National Congress. We then analyze the fake controversies promoted by these contrarians and argue that, to properly understand them, we need to consider a strategy so far overlooked in the literature: the manufacture of pseudo-facts, namely, affirmations at odds with the established literature but that strives to appear as scientific facts. Unlike other contexts, in which contrarians have mainly sought to cast doubt on consensual issues by arguing that there are still considerable uncertainties surrounding them, in Brazil pseudo-facts on deforestation have been produced and published outside the peer-reviewed literature. We conclude the study with recommendations on how to oppose fake scientific controversies that threaten environmental conservation in general.
