ResumoThe aim of this research was to describe and analyze the thermal characteristics of different land cover types, including grassland typologies, from the Pampa biome, using Landsat 8 TIRS thermal bands in the winter and summer seasons. Thus, three main steps were performed: (1) estimating land surface temperature (LTS) and vegetation indices from Landsat 8 images, TIRS and OLI sensors; (2) defining samples for interpretation and analysis; (3) analysing LST in the different land cover classes (crops, grassland and forest) and grassland typologies (Shrubby grasslands, Coastal grasslands, Andropogoneae and asteraceae mixed grasslands, Aristida spp. grasslands, Shallow soils grasslands, Sandy grasslands, Eastern Crystaline mixed grasslands, Grassy grasslands and Vachellia caven grasslands). LST ranged from 10°C to 44°C, with minimum recorded in August and maximum in December. The diferent land cover temperatures differed statistically from each other (α=0.05), with crops presenting temperatures at up to 6°C higher in relation to forests and 2.8°C higher in relation to grasslands. We conclude that thermal images are important for research on the Pampa Biome, as they allow following thermal characteristics of different land covers and pointing out areas that undergo LST significant changes in monitoring schemes.

ResumoDigisonde data obtained from July 2019 to June 2020 are used to study the overall occurrences of the blanketing types (Es-f,Es- Es-l, Es-h, Es-c) of the sporadic layers (Es-b) over Santa Maria, a transition station from low to middle latitude in the South American Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA). The results show that the average occurrence of the Es-b layers is 54%, being maximum in summer (66%), followed by spring (63%), autumn (55%), and winter (40%). Except during the winter, the Es-f is the predominant type, while the Es-c generally presents the lower occurrence. In general, the top (ftEs) and the blanketing (fbEs) frequencies range from 3 to 4 MHz between 100 and 110 km, with more pronounced values during daytime compared to nighttime. A comparison between the Es-b occurrences between Santa Maria and stations outside the SAMA shows a great reduction in Santa Maria. It is caused by the low intensity of the geomagnetic field, which affects the layer formation process controlled by the ion dynamics. The performance of the E-Region Ionospheric Model (MIRE), which use the tidal wind components provided by the Global Scale Wave Model as input, is analyzed in simulating the fbEs parameter and compared with measurements. The discrepancies between the modeled and measured fbEs are reduced when the meridional/zonal wind components are adjusted by some factor. This comparison contributes to our understanding of the role of the tidal winds over Santa Maria, a transition station from low to middle latitude in Brazil.

ResumoThe INPE-UFSMs NANOSATC-BR CubeSats Development Program started in early 2008. Nowadays, the program has two CubeSats in space: the NANOSATC-BR1 (1U), launched in 2014 and currently in standby mode, and the NANOSATC-BR2 (2U), which was recently launched in March 22, 2021 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. In this article, the launch of NANOSATC-BR2 is presented, alongside with its final tests, initial operations and expected scientific results. Regarding the Capacity Building, the main objective of the program, this work focuses in the involvement of the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM undergraduate students and professionals in the tracking and control of CubeSats through the INPEs Ground Station at Santa Maria, which works as an excellent tool for supporting CubeSat scientific missions from all around the world and also to qualify students to work on the Ground Segment of space missions. The program was supported by the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).

ResumoThe current nanosatellite from the NANOSATC-BR CubeSat Development Program, the CubeSat NANOSATC-BR3 (NCBR3), is in its concept studies phase of the development process. Being the third CubeSat developed between INPE and UFSM partnership, the NCBR3 mission has different objectives: to develop capacity building in the space sector; to study space radiation at the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) region with Brazilian data; to promote interaction between radio amateur community and small satellites, and to validate in space cutting-edge Brazilian technologies. The Project relies on the NASA life cycle phases and uses the systems engineering approach of the same space agency. According to NASA, after establishing the Concept Studies (Pre-Phase A) and as the last step of Concept and Technology Development (Phase A), it is suggested a Mission Definition Review (MDR). This review has the intention to estimate whether the proposed architecture is responsive to the performance and the functional requirements, as well as if requirements have been allocated to all functional elements of the mission. A successful and well-conducted MDR reinforces the project decisions and contributes as a baseline for the system acquisition strategy. In previous NANOSATC-BR missions, the reviews were organized through the traditional process known as document-based, which includes the use of extensive paperwork. By making the usage of documents for this type of review, revealed that several ambiguities and inconsistencies are more likely to occur. Also, it showed difficulties for configuration control in a Project involving many developers and stakeholders, such as students, professors, technicians, and scientists. With that in mind, this work proposes a method to perform Project reviews in a Model-centric approach, using the MDR of a CubeSat Project as a use case. The authors use a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) open-source software with an embedded Systems Engineering method. With the support of MBSE, the stakeholder analysis information can be broken down into operational and functional layers, allowing a global understanding of the mission. The results showed that using MBSE promotes a wellstructured Review and facilitates the review process between all stakeholders with different backgrounds.

ResumoNeste trabalho serão apresentadas as estatísticas preliminares das observações de luminescência atmosférica ou aeroluminescência realizadas por imageador all-sky entre 2017 e 2020, a partir do Observatório Espacial do Sul (OES/COESU/INPE-MCTI). Com esse instrumento podemos observar ondas de gravidade atmosféricas, oscilações mecânicas geradas pelo desequilíbrio entre as forças de gravidade e do gradiente de pressão. A partir de análises preliminares visuais das observações noturnas de aeroluminescência foram quantificadas as noites propícias à identificação de eventos de onda de gravidade, classificando essas em úteis e inúteis, segundo critérios pré-estabelecido, tais como visibilidade do céu, contaminação luminosa e duração das observações. Até o momento foram observadas 1.063 noites, dessas, 410 foram classificadas como úteis e 653 como inúteis. Foram contabilizadas 6.708 horas de observações, sendo 2.995 horas com condições propícias para identificação de eventos de ondas de gravidade, ou seja, 44,64% das horas observadas. Ainda serão analisadas as observações dos anos 2021 e 2022, para que então, um estudo detalhado possa ser realizado. ABSTRACT: n this work preliminary statistics of airglow observations performed per all-sky imager between 2017 and 2020, from the Observatório Espacial do Sul (OES/COESU/INPEMCTI), will be presented. With this instrument we can observe atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs), mechanical oscillations generated by the imbalance between the forces of gravity and the pressure gradient. Based on preliminary visual analysis of the nighttime airglow observations, the nights conducive to the identification of AGWs events were quantified, classifying them as useful and useless, according to pre-established criteria, such as sky visibility, light contamination and duration of observations. So far, 1.063 nights have been observed, of which 410 were classified as useful and 653 as useless. A total of 6.708 hours of observations were recorded, 2.995 of which were suitable for the identification of AGWs events, that is 44,64% of the observed hours. The observations from the years 2021 and 2022 will still be analyzed, so that a detailed study can be carried out.

ResumoThe SUPIM-DAVS is an operational system to simulate ionosphere dynamics. The system is one of the activities of the space weather program (Embrace: Estudo e Monitoramento Brasileiro do Clima Espacial) from the National Institute for Space Research INPE: (INPE: Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais). The SUPIM-DAVS is executed every day to carry out the operational forecasting 24 hours ahead. This paper reports the performance of the SUPIM-DAVS computer code on the new vector processing architecture of the NEC SX-Aurora TSUBASA / Vector Engine. This vector computer can be a good option for intensive computing because this machine combines high computer power with lower energy demand. One copy of the SUPIM-DAVS was executed in a cluster with CPU multi-core and in the NEC SX-Tsubasa. The obtained CPU times were 4730 seconds (multi-core CPUs) and 1050 seconds (vector computer). The paper describes the strategy for migrating the CPU multi-core machine to the vector engine processing to reach the reported performance.

ResumoFacing the climate change and anthropogenic activities that have been discharging a large proportion of carbon dioxide CO2) into the atmosphere, wetlands stand out as an important sink for CO2 that is fixed in plant biomass and peatlands. Therefore, quantifying and monitoring wetland biomass is of great importance to preserve carbon stocks. This study aims to explore the potential of multispectral bands and vegetation indices (VIs) derived from PlanetScope and Sentinel-2A sensors to estimate of aboveground biomass (AGB) and organic carbon in AGB (Corg) in the emergent vegetation of a palustrine wetland. We use correlation analysis and linear regression models to examine the relationships between spectral and biophysical variables and verify the best predictor spectral variables for AGB and Corg. Scirpus giganteus vegetation was sampled in the Banhado Grande wetland, in southern Brazil. The VIs were best correlated and preferred as predictor variables. The most accurate model used data from the PlanetScope sensor and VI of photochemical reflectance. Both sensors showed potential for pixel-based estimates of AGB and Corg due to their low RMSE values and their contribution as predictors of biophysical variables, which can contribute to opening new avenues in scientific research focusing on the management, monitoring, and conservation of marshes and your ecosystem service of carbon sink.
