ResumoIn this paper, we present and discuss the response of the ionospheric F-region in the American sector during the intense geomagnetic storm which occurred on 24-25 October 2011. In this investigation ionospheric sounding data obtained of 23, 24, 25, and 26 October 2011 at Puerto Rico (United States), Jicamarca (Peru), Palmas, São José dos Campos (Brazil), and Port Stanley, are presented. Also, the GPS observations obtained at 12 stations in the equatorial, low-, mid- and high-mid-latitude regions in the American sector are presented. During the fast decrease of Dst (about <54 nT/h between 23:00 and 01:00 UT) on the night of 24-25 October (main phase), there is a prompt penetration of electric field of magnetospheric origin resulting an unusual uplifting of the F region at equatorial stations. On the night of 24-25 October 2011 (recovery phase) equatorial, low- and mid-latitude stations show h2F variations much larger than the average variations possibly associated with traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) caused by Joule heating at high latitudes. The foF2 variations at mid-latitude stations and the GPS-VTEC observations at mid- and low-latitude stations show a positive ionospheric storm on the night of 24-25 October, possibly due to changes in the large-scale wind circulation. The foF2 observations at mid-latitude station and the GPS-VTEC observations at mid- and high-mid-latitude stations show a negative ionospheric storm on the night of 24-25 October, probably associated with an increase in the density of molecular nitrogen. During the daytime on 25 October, the variations in foF2 at mid-latitude stations show large negative ionospheric storm, possibly due to changes in the O/N2 ratio. On the night of 24-25, ionospheric plasma bubbles (equatorial irregularities that extended to the low- and mid-latitude regions) are observed at equatorial, low- and mid-latitude stations. Also, on the night of 25-26, ionospheric plasma bubbles are observed at equatorial and low-latitude regions.

ResumoThe equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) development is studied using the total electron content (TEC) observed by the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) as measured by digisondes operated in the Brazilian sector, and by model simulation using the SUPIM (Sheffield University Plasmasphere Ionosphere Model). We have used two indices based on foF2 and TEC to represent the strength of the EIA Southern Anomaly Crest (SAC), which are denoted, respectively, by SAC(foF2) and SAC(TEC). Significant differences in the local time variations of the EIA intensity, as represented by these two indices, are investigated. The observed SAC indices are compared with their values modeled by the SUPIM and also by the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)-2012. The SUPIM simulations that use the standard E×. B plasma drift and neutral air wind models are found to provide acceptable representations of the observed foF2 and TEC, and hence the indices SAC(foF2) and SAC(TEC) during daytime, whereas the IRI-2012 model is not, except during the post-midnight/sunrise hours. It is found that the differences in the local time variations between the SAC(foF2) and SAC(TEC) can be reduced by limiting the TEC integrations in height up to an altitude of 630. km in the SUPIM calculations. It is also found that when the EIA intensity is calculated for an intermediate dip latitude (12°S) the difference between the local time variation patterns of the two corresponding indices in the experimental data and in the SUPIM results is reduced. For the IRI-2012 values, the subequatorial station modification does not appear to have any effect.

ResumoWe have developed algorithms for conducting a seasonal statistical study of the occurrence of plasma irregularities in the Peruvian sector as a function of height and local time, covering two years of data (2007 and 2008) close to the solar minimum. This study was performed based on radar measurements carried out at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO), which is located in Lima-Peru (11.57 degrees S, 76.52 degrees W, dip: 2 degrees N), under the magnetic equator. The statistical analysis runs over daily Range Time Intensity (RTI) maps obtained with the radar operating in the Jicamarca Unattended Long-term Investigations of the Ionosphere and Atmosphere (JULIA) mode. Our results revealed relevant features of the diurnal variation of the plasma irregularities embedded in the equatorial electrojet, such as: a more often occurring presence of the 3-m irregularities during equinox, and a descent of the scattering profile in the morning hours, followed by its ascent in the afternoon.

ResumoThis article presents a description of a new Tunable Filter Instrument for the SOAR telescope. The Brazilian Tunable Filter Imager (BTFI) is a highly versatile new technology to be used both in seeing-limited mode and at higher spatial fidelity using the SAM Ground-Layer Adaptive Optics facility (SOAR Adaptive Module) which is being deployed at the SOAR telescope. Such an instrument presents important new science capabilities for the SOAR astronomical community, from studies of the centers of nearby galaxies and the insterstellar medium to statistical cosmological investigations. The BTFI concept takes advantage of three new technologies. The imaging Bragg Tunable Filter (iBTF) concept utilizes Volume Phase Holographic Gratings in a double-pass configuration as a tunable filter, while a new Fabry-Perot (FP) concept involves the use of commercially available technologies which allow a single FP etalon to act over a very large range of interference orders and hence spectral resolutions. Both of these filter technologies will be used in the same instrument. The combination allows for highly versatile capabilities. Spectral resolutions spanning the range between 25 and 30,000 can be achieved in the same instrument through the use of iBTF at low resolution and scanning FPs beyond R similar to 2; 000 with some overlap in the mid-range. The third component of the new technologies deployed in BTFI is the use of EMCCDs, which allow for rapid and cyclical wavelength scanning thus mitigating the damaging effect of atmospheric variability through the acquisition of the data cube. An additional important feature of the instrument is that it has two optical channels which allow for the simultaneous recording of the narrow-band, filtered image with the remaining (complementary) broadband light. This avoids the otherwise inevitable uncertainties inherent in tunable filter imaging using a single detector, which is subject to temporal variability of the atmospheric conditions. The system was designed to supply tunable filter imaging with a field-of-view of 3' on a side, sampled at 0.12 `' for direct Nasmyth seeing-limited area spectroscopy and for SAM's visitor instrument port for GLAO-fed area spectroscopy. The instrument has seen first light, mounted on the SOAR telescope, as a visitor instrument. It is now in commissioning phase.

ResumoThis special issue of the Journal of Atmospheric and SolarTerrestrial Physics on Recent Advances in Equatorial, Low- and Mid-latitude Aeronomy contains selected papers presented at the 13th International Symposium on Equatorial Aeronomy (ISEA13). This symposium is the latest in a long series of ISEAs, which was started in 1962 soon after the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO) began its operation near Lima, Peru. The first ISEA was held in Huaychulo, Peru; and since then the symposium has been held every 35 years at different locations around the globe, bringing together scientists from all over the world, who are interested in the low- and mid-latitude atmosphere and ionosphere, and their coupling to other latitudes and altitudes. The ISEAs have become important events for researchers working in this field, as it offers them an opportunity to share their most recent results and discuss new techniques and possibilities for future coordinated campaigns and experiments.

ResumoThis brief report presents unique day-time F region coherent scatter echoes observed by the 30MHz radar over São Luís in eastern Brazil. The radar observation was part of the July 2011 radar campaign designed to detect echoes from day-time F region irregularities. These rare day-time F region radar echoes, scattered from short wavelength plasma irregularities, have quasi patchy features. They are characterized by large upward Doppler velocities (~100-200m/s). They are very weak (by more than 10dB) when compared to radar echoes observed over São Luís scattered from the night-time F plasma irregularities known as equatorial spread F. Simultaneous GPS vertical total electron content (TEC), and F2 peak frequency (fºF2) and F2 peak height (hmF2) estimated from ionosonde measurements over São Luís have provided additional evidence that the received day-time F region radar echoes were from genuine ionospheric scatterers. This report suggests physical explanations for the day-time radar echoes in terms of the generalized Rayleigh-Taylor instability mechanism operating on large magnetic declination (~20° westward) of the geomagnetic field geometry in São Luís, conductivity distribution in the winter southern hemisphere and summer northern hemisphere, and the resulting magnetic flux tube electric field configurations.

ResumoFeatures of the terdiurnal tide in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) are investigated using four years (2005-2008) of meteor radar wind data from a southern hemisphere equatorial station, São João do Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W). Prominent existence of the terdiurnal tide is found to be a permanent feature of the MLT over the present site. It exhibits considerable inter-annual variability with smaller amplitude during 2007. Maximum monthly mean amplitudes of the terdiurnal tide are found to be ~11 and 14. m/s in the zonal and meridional winds, respectively. The meridional wind shows sharp amplitude enhancement during fall equinox and a broader peak during late winter and spring equinox. Phase profiles indicate large vertical wavelength and possible wave evanescence. The generation mechanism of the terdiurnal tide has been investigated and it is inferred that nonlinear interaction between the diurnal tide and semidiurnal tide/gravity waves can partially excite the terdiurnal tide during fall equinox and solar heating is believed to be the primary source at the present latitude throughout the year.

ResumoUsing long-term data (1998-2008) collected from mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere (MST) radar and Rayleigh Lidar located at a tropical station, Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E), India, vertical flux of the momentum from troposphere to mesosphere associated with the gravity waves of periods in the range 20min to 2h is investigated for the first time. The emphasis is on seasonal variability of mean zonal and meridional momentum fluxes in mesosphere and troposphere and vertical flux of horizontal momentum in the stratosphere. At tropospheric altitudes of 11-16km large enhancement in flux is noticed during equinoxes. In the lower mesosphere in the altitude region 58-62km the maximum values of flux (~2.8m2/s2) observed are pragmatic in winter and spring. Interestingly, the vertical flux of horizontal momentum estimated from lidar is in the range of those estimated from radar data in the overlap altitude region, though the estimates are from two different techniques. In the mesosphere, large variations with altitude in zonal momentum flux are noticed with a magnitude ~0-4m2/s2 in summer. In winter and summer the zonal wind direction is opposite to the momentum flux direction between 73 and 80km and in equinoxes zonal wind follows the momentum flux. The meridional fluxes in the mesosphere are higher in equinoxes (~10-12m2/s2).

Wave-wave interaction
ResumoCharacteristics of the quasi-two-day wave (QTDW) have been investigated during late summer of 2005, 2006 and 2007 using meteor wind observations over Santa Maria (29.7 degrees S, 53.7 degrees W), Brazil. Significant inter-annual variability is evident in the derived wave parameters. Maximum wave amplitude is found to be 18 and 42 m/s for zonal and meridional wind, respectively. Mean vertical wavelength shows the values of similar to 62 and 74 km for zonal and meridional components, respectively. In general high QTDW amplitude is observed when diurnal tide amplitude is lower suggesting strong wave-tide interaction and enhancement of the QTDW at the expense of the diurnal tide energy. Furthermore, the amplitude of the QTDW reveals a clear modulation of 7-8 days periodicity suggesting nonlinear interaction among planetary waves and a probable reason for the observed QTDW variability. Comparison of the present site with the other two Brazilian low latitude sites reveals overall latitudinal invariance except during a few local and/or transient events. There is an indication of wave ducting in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere through which the QTDW can extend latitudinally. Although the response of the QTDW to the mean background wind sometimes exhibits meridional (northward) acceleration, there is no evident signature in the zonal background wind. Both mechanisms suggested so far for exciting the QTDW, i.e. (i) baroclinic/barotropic instability and (ii) Rossby-gravity normal modes are found to be consistent with the present findings.

Rocket measurements
ResumoSimultaneous in-situ measurements of electron density and temperature in the nighttime equatorial region were performed by a rocket experiment launched under solar minimum and geomagnetic quiet conditions from the station of Alcântara (2.24°S; 44.24°W), Brazil, on Dec. 18, 1995, 21:17 LT. These measurements detected during the upleg flight a large overheated area around the base of density profile. The presence of plasma bubbles was revealed during the downleg phase, as well as temperature enhancements detected preferentially at altitudes where plasma depletions are found. It was assumed that the region traversed by the rocket during the downleg was preceded before the bubble's onset by a large overheating as observed during the upleg flight. Analyzing this framework under the light of the Global Self-Consistent Model of the Thermosphere, Ionosphere and Protonosphere (GSM TIP), as well as a 2D numerical code that simulate the growth of an instability and the evolution of thermal energy inside a bubble, we found that despite an overheated area in the F-region bottomside can disturb the electron density profile around the altitude interval where such heat is deposited, it seems not have a direct influence over parameters responsible for the bubble onset. Additionally, the phenomenon of the intra-bubble thermal enhancement could be formed due to the convection of hot-electron fluid transported from the overheated region surrounding the base of the F-region to upper altitudes by the underlying mechanism of bubble generation.
