ResumoThis article described the development and implementation of a software architecture to perform on-board planning for INPE satellites. This enables, with respect to the space segment, the adoption of the goal-based operations paradigm and consequently allows for an increase of the autonomy level. The performance presented by the architecture in a realistic case study is comparable to those reported by the only three NASA missions that have run on-board planning in the space segment up-to-date. A new planning modeling language was created, which allows a description of the operations domain closer to the real system and with few abstractions. The implemented architecture is integrated to the flight software and fit to run in space-qualified hardware with limited processing power.

ResumoDue to the space missions limited budget, small satellite cluster or constellation would be an economical choice. From risk-sharing viewpoint, a number of smaller satellites have a significant reliability advantage over a bigger one. Generally, one satellite is subject to two types of uncertainties: structured uncertainty that represents some satellite parameter variation and the unstructured uncertainty that represents some kind of the satellite model error. On the other hand, the Satellite Attitude Control (SAC) design becomes more vulnerable to uncertainty disturbances like model error and moment-of-inertia variation as the satellite has great decrease in size and weight. This is the case for a microsatellite with mass less than 100 kg where the ACS performance and robustness become very sensitive to both kinds of uncertainties. As a result, the design of the SAC has to deal with both types of uncertainties which is associated with the drawback between controller performance and robustness. The purpose of this work is to model a microsatellite taking into account the uncertainties and to perform the Control System Design based on the mixed H-2/H-infinity methodology via LMI optimization.

ResumoAttitude control of artificial satellites is dependent on information provided by its attitude determination process. This paper presents the implementation and tests of a fully self-contained algorithm for the attitude determination using magnetometers and accelerometers, for application on a satellite simulator based on frictionless air bearing tables. However, it is known that magnetometers and accelerometers need to be calibrated so as to allow that measurements are used to their ultimate accuracy. A calibration method is implemented which proves to be essential for improving attitude determination accuracy. For the stepwise real-time attitude determination, it was used the well-known QUEST algorithm which yields quick response with reduced computer resources. The algorithms are tested and qualified with actual data collected on the streets under controlled situations. For such street runaways, the experiment employs a solid-state magnetoresistive magnetometer and an IMU navigation block consisting of triads of accelerometers and gyros, with MEMS technology. A GPS receiver is used to record positional information. The collected measurements are processed through the developed algorithms, and comparisons are made for attitude determination using calibrated and noncalibrated data. The results show that the attitude accuracy reaches the requirements for real-time operation for satellite simulator platforms.

ResumoThis work describes the design of a liquid propellant rocket engine using non-toxic, low-cost propellants, for a second generation space transportation system. The primary goals of this effort were to identify the most attractive fuel and system design approach for sizing a workhorse engine and to determine technology advancements that are needed to provide subsequent system development. The emphasis of the analysis was directed toward propellant perfomance and engine characterization. On the basis of operational and cost criteria, ethanol was determined to be the best fuel candidate. Because of the high heat flux conditions at high chamber pressures, regenerative cooling was chosen as the preferred method of wall protection, leaving film cooling as a supplementary chamber cooling method. A finite element analysis was carried out to evaluate thrust chamber reliability on steady working operation and hydraulic test mode. The study contributed to establish a better understanding of propellant potentialities and to investigate the best means of utilizing these capabilities in typical engine designs. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

ResumoThis paper is devoted to the attitude and vibration control of spacecraft containing flexible appendages. It entails an investigation of a passive control strategy which consists in connecting piezoelectric transducers bonded to the flexible elements to electric circuits in such a way that the vibration energy, once converted into electrical energy, is transferred and partially dissipated into the electric circuit. This strategy enables to circumvent some difficulties involved in active control such as instability and the necessity of a large amount of hardware, which can be critical in space applications. One considers an artificial satellite model composed of a hub, a reaction wheel used for angular position control and two identical flexible panels, which contain piezoelectric patches symmetrically bonded to their surfaces. The equations of motion are derived based on the Assumed Modes approach, accounting for the electromechanical coupling and the presence of two types of circuits (resistive, and resistive-inductive). The effectiveness of the control strategy suggested is assessed by means of numerical simulations of a satellite undergoing an angular position correction commanded by proportional-derivative torque applied by the reaction wheel. The results demonstrate that the panel vibrations levels and coupling between flexible and rigid-body motions are significantly reduced for both types of circuits considered, such effectiveness being greater for resistive-inductive shunt circuits.

ResumoThe present paper has the goal of studying close approaches between a planet and a group of particles. The mathematical model includes the presence of the atmosphere of the planet. This cloud is assumed to be created by the passage of the spacecraft in the atmosphere of the planet, which can cause the explosion of the spacecraft. The system is assumed to be formed by the Sun, the planet, and the spacecraft that explodes and becomes a cloud of particles. The Sun and the planet are assumed to be in circular orbits and the motion is planar. The equations of motion are the ones given by the circular planar restricted three-body problem combined with the forces given by the atmospheric drag. In the numerical simulations, the planet Jupiter is the celestial body used for the close approaches. The initial positions and velocities of the spacecraft and the particles are specified at the periapsis, because it is assumed that this is the point where the explosion occurs.

ResumoThe equations for the variations of the Keplerian elements of the orbit of a spacecraft perturbed by a third body are developed using a single average over the motion of the spacecraft, considering an elliptic orbit for the disturbing body. A comparison is made between this approach and the more used double averaged technique, as well as with the full elliptic restricted three-body problem. The disturbing function is expanded in Legendre polynomials up to the second order in both cases. The equations of motion are obtained from the planetary equations, and several numerical simulations are made to show the evolution of the orbit of the spacecraft. Some characteristics known from the circular perturbing body are studied: circular, elliptic equatorial, and frozen orbits. Different initial eccentricities for the perturbed body are considered, since the effect of this variable is one of the goals of the present study. The results show the impact of this parameter as well as the differences between both models compared to the full elliptic restricted three-body problem. Regions below, near, and above the critical angle of the third-body perturbation are considered, as well as different altitudes for the orbit of the spacecraft. © 2013 R. C. Domingos et al.

ResumoThe goal of the present paper is to study the problem of station keeping maneuvers of satellites that belong to a constellation. The objective is to perform those maneuvers with low fuel consumption and but also including a time constraint. This type of problem has several aspects to be considered, like fuel consumption, duration of the maneuvers. These aspects are applied to all the satellites of the constellation, so a strategy has to be found to consider the global optimization of those variables that can control the geometry of the constellation. So, this is a multiobjective problem. To find a solution, strategies are formulated that minimize the fuel consumption considering all the satellites and also considering the duration of the maneuver. Numerical examples are shown.

ResumoAn algorithm for real-time and onboard orbit determination applying the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method is developed. Aiming at a very simple and still fairly accurate orbit determination, an analysis is performed to ascertain an adequacy of modeling complexity versus accuracy. The minimum set of to-be-estimated states to reach the level of accuracy of tens of meters is found to have at least the position, velocity, and user clock offset components. The dynamical model is assessed through several tests, covering force model, numerical integration scheme and step size, and simplified variational equations. The measurement model includes only relevant effects to the order of meters. The EKF method is chosen to be the simplest real-time estimation algorithm with adequate tuning of its parameters. In the developed procedure, the obtained position and velocity errors along a day vary from 15 to 20 m and from 0.014 to 0.018 m/s, respectively, with standard deviation from 6 to 10 m and from 0.006 to 0.008 m/s, respectively, with the SA either on or off. The results, as well as analysis of the final adopted models used, are presented in this work.

ResumoA planetary satellite of interest at the present moment for the scientific community is Europa, one of the four largest moons of Jupiter. There are some missions planned to visit Europa in the next years, for example, Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO, NASA) and Jupiter IcyMoon Explorer (JUICE, ESA). In this paper, we search for orbits around Europa with long lifetimes. Here, we develop the disturbing potential in closed form up to the second order to analyze the effects caused on the orbital elements of an artificial satellite around Europa. The equations of motion are developed in closed form to avoid expansions in power series of the eccentricity and inclination. We found polar orbits with long lifetimes. This type of orbits reduces considerably the maintenance cost of the orbit. We show a formula to calculate the critical inclination of orbits around Europa taking into account the disturbing potential due to the nonspherical shape of the central body and the perturbation of the third body.
