ABSTRACT: Studying and monitoring vegetation is the key to understand the current climate pattern in both regional and global scales. Dynamical Vegetation Models(DVM) are useful tools in biome studies, since they are based on physical principles as well as on initial and boundary conditions. They are able to obtain evidences of factors that influence the modeled environment, predicting future vegetation behavior and, in association with other models, making future predictions of vegetation influence on climate or the effect of climate change on vegetation it self. In particular, reflectance models are part of DVMs. Some studies have attempted to identify canopy elements influence on the vegetation cover albedo, obtaining the best configuration of parameters to be used. Important parameters are estimated from the reflectance inspecific spectral bands. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the IBIS model - Integrated Biosphere Simulator performance running it at three bands red, near infrared, and blue, corresponding to the bands 1, 2 and 3 of the MODIS sensor, onboard of the TERRA and AQUA satellites. The sensitivity to optical parameters (leaf reflectance) and architecture (slope of the leaves) of the canopy was also evaluated. These optical and architectural parameters were calibrated according to the surface reflectance and vegetation index from MODIS for the Cuieiras Reserve (K34). The sensitivity analysis indicated a strong influence of the upper canopy parameters. The parameters combination that minimizes the RMSE of EVI Enhanced Vegetation Index (RMSE = 0.0245) were the slope of the upper canopy leaves χup = 0.92,reflectance from the upper canopy leaves in the blue band ρblue−up = 0.0162, red band ρred−up = 0.0466 and near infrared band ρnir−up = 0.4427.

ResumoModeling interactions between social and natural systems is a hard task. It involves collecting data, building up a conceptual approach, implementing, calibrating, simulating, validating, and possibly repeating these steps again and again. There are different conceptual approaches proposed in the literature to tackle this problem. However, for complex problems it is better to combine different approaches, giving rise to a need for flexible and extensible frameworks for modeling nature-society interactions. In this paper we present TerraME, an open source toolbox that supports multi-paradigm and multi-scale modeling of coupled human-environmental systems. It enables models that combine agent-based, cellular automata, system dynamics, and discrete event simulation paradigms. TerraME has a GIS interface for managing real-world geospatial data and uses Lua, an expressive scripting language.

South Atlantic coral reefs
ResumoCurrent metrics for predicting bleaching episodes, e.g. NOAA's Coral Reef Watch Program, do not seem to apply well to Brazil's marginal reefs located in Bahia state and alternative predictive approaches must be sought for effective long term management. Bleaching occurrences at Abrolhos have been observed since the 1990s but with a much lower frequency/extent than for other reef systems worldwide. We constructed a Bayesian Belief Network (BN) to back-predict the intensity of bleaching events and learn how local and regional scale forcing factors interact to enhance or alleviate coral bleaching specific to Abrolhos. Bleaching intensity data were collected for several reef sites across Bahia state coast (similar to 12 degrees-20 degrees S; 37 degrees-40 degrees W) during the austral summer 1994-2005 and compared to environmental data: sea surface temperature (SST), diffuse light attenuation coefficient at 490 nm (K-490), rain precipitation, wind velocities, and El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) proxies. Conditional independence tests were calculated to produce four specialized BNs, each with specific factors that likely regulate bleaching intensity. All specialized BNs identified that a five-day accumulated SST proxy (SSTAc5d) was the exclusive parent node for coral bleaching producing a total predictive rate of 88\\% based on SSTAc5d state. When SSTAc5d was simulated as unknown, the Thermal-Eolic Resultant BN kept the total predictive rate of 88\\%. Our approach has produced initial means to predict beaching intensity at Abrolhos. However, the robustness of the model required for management purposes must be further (and regularly) operationally tested with new in situ and remote sensing data.

ResumoThe seaboard of Brazil is a highly favorable setting for studying episodes of worldwide sea-level rise because of its passive nature. Previous studies of the equatorial coast of Brazil have led to the recognition of extensive Oligo-Miocene and Miocene marine-influenced deposits, but these deposits have been overlooked in other coastal areas of Brazil. The aim of the present study is to show the origin and evolution of late Oligocene and Miocene marine-influenced strata exposed in more than 5000. km of coastal areas along the WNW-trending equatorial and NNE-trending eastern Brazilian continental margins. We review the most relevant data concerning the strata of these ages exposed along the equatorial and eastern margins of Brazil, and combine them with new data. Based on these occurrences, we analyze the history of sea-level fluctuations and show that marine-influenced strata are more widespread in these margins than originally thought. Our main results indicate that a marine influence is not only imprinted in the deposits exposed along the equatorial margin, but it is also widespread in several areas of the eastern margin. For a long geological time interval ranging from the end of the Cretaceous or Paleogene up to the late Oligocene, most of the Brazilian coast remained a non-depositional site exposed to subaerial erosion and lateritic soil development. The combination of sea-level rise and tectonic subsidence promoted sediment accumulation in the onshore portion of several basins. Two transgressive episodes occurred: one in the Oligo-Miocene and another in the early/middle Miocene. The latter gave rise to deposition of the Barreiras Formation. However, during the supposedly middle Miocene eustatic sea-level highstand in coastal Brazil, there was a renewed and extensive phase of non-deposition and subaerial erosion with lateritic soil formation, a process that lasted up to the Late Quaternary. This mismatching of the sedimentary record with other South American and continental areas is discussed herein. As in many other areas of South America and of the world, the regressive-transgressive events recorded along the Brazilian coast most likely responded to a combination of eustatic sea-level fluctuations and local factors such as tectonic activity, intraplate stresses and changes in dynamic topography during the post-rift history of the eastern South American Plate.

ResumoRecent Amazonian droughts have drawn attention to the vulnerability of tropical forests to climate perturbations. Satellite and in situ observations have shown an increase in fire occurrence during drought years and tree mortality following severe droughts, but to date there has been no assessment of long-term impacts of these droughts across landscapes in Amazonia. Here, we use satellite microwave observations of rainfall and canopy backscatter to show that more than 70 million hectares of forest in western Amazonia experienced a strong water deficit during the dry season of 2005 and a closely corresponding decline in canopy structure and moisture. Remarkably, and despite the gradual recovery in total rainfall in subsequent years, the decrease in canopy backscatter persisted until the next major drought, in 2010. The decline in backscatter is attributed to changes in structure and water content associated with the forest upper canopy. The persistence of low backscatter supports the slow recovery (>4 y) of forest canopy structure after the severe drought in 2005. The result suggests that the occurrence of droughts in Amazonia at 5-10 y frequency may lead to persistent alteration of the forest canopy.

ResumoAedes aegypti has developed evolution-driven adaptations for surviving in the domestic human habitat. Several trap models have been designed considering these strategies and tested for monitoring this efficient vector of Dengue. Here, we report a real-scale evaluation of a system for monitoring and controlling mosquito populations based on egg sampling coupled with geographic information systems technology. The SMCP-Aedes, a system based on open technology and open data standards, was set up from March/2008 to October/2011 as a pilot trial in two sites of Pernambuco Brazil: Ipojuca (10,000 residents) and Santa Cruz (83,000), in a joint effort of health authorities and staff, and a network of scientists providing scientific support. A widespread infestation by Aedes was found in both sites in 2008-2009, with 96.8\\%-100\\% trap positivity. Egg densities were markedly higher in SCC than in Ipojuca. A 90\\% decrease in egg density was recorded in SCC after two years of sustained control pressure imposed by suppression of >7,500,000 eggs and >3,200 adults, plus larval control by adding fishes to cisterns. In Ipojuca, 1.1 million mosquito eggs were suppressed and a 77\\% reduction in egg density was achieved. This study aimed at assessing the applicability of a system using GIS and spatial statistic analysis tools for quantitative assessment of mosquito populations. It also provided useful information on the requirements for reducing well-established mosquito populations. Results from two cities led us to conclude that the success in markedly reducing an Aedes population required the appropriate choice of control measures for sustained mass elimination guided by a user-friendly mosquito surveillance system. The system was able to support interventional decisions and to assess the program's success. Additionally, it created a stimulating environment for health staff and residents, which had a positive impact on their commitment to the dengue control program.

ResumoThe Amazon River floodplain is subject to large seasonal variations in water level and flood extent, due to the large size and low relief of the basin, and the large amount of precipitation in the region. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data can be used to map flooded area in these wetlands, given its ability to provide continuous information without being heavily affected by cloud cover. As part of JAXA's Kyoto & Carbon Initiative, extensive wide-swath, multi-temporal SAR coverage of the Amazon basin has been obtained using the ScanSAR mode of ALOS PALSAR This study presents a method for monitoring flood extent variation using ALOS ScanSAR images, tested at the Curuai Lake floodplain, in the lower Amazon River, Brazil. Twelve ScanSAR scenes were acquired between 2006 and 2010, including seven during the 2007 hydrological year. Water level records, field photographs, optical images (Landsat-5/TM and MODIS/Ferra and Aqua) and topographic data were used as auxiliary information. A data mining algorithm allowed the implementation of a hierarchical, object-based classification algorithm, able to map land cover types and flooding status in the study area for all available dates. land cover based on the entire time series (classification levels 1 and 2) had overall accuracies of 90\\% and 83\\%, respectively. Level 3 classifications (one map per image date) were validated only for the lowest and highest water stages, with overall accuracies of 76\\% and 78\\%, respectively. Total flood extent (Level 4) was mapped with 84\\% and 94\\% accuracies, for the low and high water stages, respectively. Regression models were fitted between mapped flooded area and water levels at the Curuai gauge to predict flood extent. A polynomial model had R-2=0.95 (p<0.05) and an overall root mean square error (RMSE) of 241 km(2), while a logistic model had R-2=0.98 (p<0.05) and RMSE = 127 km(2). (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. ResumoUnderstanding the light absorption and light use efficiency of each species at the tree scale is essential to disentangle the effects of intra- and inter-species interactions on productivity in mixed-species forest plantations. A complete randomized block design was set up using Eucalyptus grandis (E) and Acacia mangium (A), which is a N-2-fixing species, planted in monospecific stands (100A, 100E) and in additive (25A:100E, 50A:100E, 100A:100E) and replacement (50A:50E) mixtures. Tree size and biomass were monitored over the complete rotation (6 years). The absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) for each tree in the experiment was simulated over the full rotation with the MAESTRA model. Measurements of tree leaf area, leaf angle distributions, leaf area density, and leaf and soil optical properties were performed to parameterize this model. The APAR and the ratio of stem biomass increment divided by the APAR (which is a measure of the Light Use Efficiency [LUE] for stem production) were calculated at tree and plot scales for each year of the rotation. The LUE of the 100E stand increased with age until stabilizing at 4 years of age, while the LUE of the 100A stand decreased between 2 and 4 years of age and increased between the two last years of the rotation. Eucalyptus trees dominated Acacia trees in mixed plantations. The stratification of the canopy led to an increase of stand Leaf Area Index (LAI) and APAR compared to monospecific plantations. However, both Eucalyptus and Acacia LUE decreased at the end of the rotation in the mixed-species stands, with the decrease occurring more markedly in Acacia, and the final stem biomass of the stand was not enhanced in mixed-species plantations compared with the average of the pure stands. Our results indicate that a stratified canopy may offer the potential benefit of capturing more light in mixed-species forests, but this may be negated if another resource deficiency prevents trees from converting intercepted radiation into dry matter. Mixed-species plantations should be established at sufficiently rainfed sites to maximize LUE, and appropriate fertilizer regimes should be applied.

ResumoThe light field and its relationship with biogeochemical variables were investigated in the Solimes, Negro, Amazon, Madeira, Uatum, Trombetas, and Tapajs Rivers. In high suspended sediment rivers, total suspended matter is the primary control on light attenuation (r = 0.8), with colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) being secondary (r = -0.6) due to scattering and absorption, respectively. Photosynthetically active radiation was the lowest (< 100.0 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) at the depth of half Z (1\\%)) and was limited to depths of less than 1.0 m and confined to red light. In low suspended sediment rivers, CDOM is the primary control on light attenuation (r = 0.9). The concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chla) and CDOM cause variations among these rivers. High CDOM rivers, Negro and Uatum, are depleted (< 0.5\\% of incoming irradiance) of blue and green light at the depth of half Z (1\\%). The light spectra of low CDOM and higher Chla waters, such as the Tapajs, Uatum, and Trombetas Rivers at rising water stage, are restricted to green and red wavelengths, and marked by high absorption at 620 and 670 nm, due to the presence of Cyanophyceae.

ResumoThere is great potential for the development of remote sensing methods that integrate and exploit both multispectral and multitemporal information. This paper presents a new image processing method: Spectral-Temporal Analysis by Response Surface (STARS), which synthesizes the full information content of a multitemporal-multispectral remote sensing image data set to represent the spectral variation over time of features on the Earth's surface. Depending on the application, STARS can be effectively implemented using a range of different models [e.g., polynomial trend surface (PTS) and collocation surface (CS)], exploiting data from different sensors, with varying spectral wavebands and acquiring data at irregular time intervals. A case study was used to test STARS, evaluating its potential to characterize sugarcane harvest practices in Brazil, specifically with and without preharvest straw burning. Although the CS model presented sharper and more defined spectral-temporal surfaces, abrupt changes related to the sugarcane harvest event were also well characterized with the PTS model when a suitable degree was set. Orthonormal coefficients were tested for both the PTS and CS models and performed more accurately than regular coefficients when used as input for three evaluated classifiers: instance based, decision tree, and neural network. Results show that STARS holds considerable potential for representing the spectral changes over time of features on the Earth's surface, thus becoming an effective image processing method, which is useful not only for classification purposes but also for other applications such as understanding land-cover change. The STARS algorithm can be found at www.dsr.inpe.br/~mello. © 2012 IEEE.
