ResumoThe problem of day-to-day variability in onset of equatorial spread F (ESF) is addressed using data from the 2002 COPEX observational campaign in Brazil and numerical modeling. The observational results show that for values of virtual height of the F layer base less than 355 km at around 18:35 LT, and for the prereversal peak enhancement of the vertical plasma drift (Vp) less than 30 m/s, the spread-F (ESF) was absent on four nights over Cachimbo (9.5°S, 54.8°W, dip latitude = -2.1°). In this work we analyze the geophysical conditions for the generation of the irregularities by comparing the nights with and without the ESF. In the comparison a numerical code is used to simulate plasma irregularity development in an extended altitude range from the bottom of the equatorial F layer. The code uses the flux corrected transport method with Boris-Book's flux limiter for the spatial integration and a predictor-corrector method for the direct time integration of the continuity equation for O+ and the SOR (Successive-Over-Relaxation) method for electric potential equation. The code is tested with different evening eastward electric fields (or vertical drifts Vp < 30 m/s and Vp > 30 m/s) in order to study the influence of the prereversal enhancement in the zonal electric field on plasma bubble formation and development. The code also takes into account the zonal wind, the vertical electric field and the collision frequency of ions with neutrals and the amplitude of initial perturbation. The simulation shows a good agreement with the observational results of the ESF. The results of the code suggest that the instability can grow at the F layer bottomside by the Rayleigh-Taylor mechanism only when the Vp > 30 m/s. In the analyzed cases we have considered the competition of other geophysical parameters in the generation of plasma structures.

ResumoSporadic E layers are formed dominantly by wind shear mechanism, but their formation and dynamics are driven also by ionospheric electric fields. Investigation of low latitude sporadic E layers under quiet conditions shows that Es layer formation during post sunset hours can be disrupted or enhanced depending upon the vertical structure of the vertical electric field arising from sunset electrodynamic processes. During magnetic storms the formation and disruption of these layers are also strongly controlled by vertical Hall electric field induced by the zonal magnetospheric electric fields that penetrates to equatorial/low latitude ionosphere. Observational results on storm time Es layer responses in the Brazilian and Indian-Asian longitudes are compared. An under-shielding prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) of westward polarity that dominate the night side ionosphere, or an over-shielding electric field also of westward polarity in the evening sector can cause formation of sporadic E layers near 100km, while an eastward polarity electric field, (under-shielding/over-shielding depending upon local time) can lead to disruption of an Es layer in progress. Ionization convergence/divergence leading to the Es layer formation/disruption is driven by a vertical Hall electric field, induced by the primary zonal PPEF, in the presence of storm associated enhanced ratio of field line integrated Hall to Pedersen conductivity (H)/(P). A downward polarity of the Hall electric field leads to Es layer formation, while an upward polarity causes the Es layer disruption. An enhancement in the H/P ratio can result from E layer conductivity enhancement due to energetic particle precipitation peculiar to the longitude of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA) and/or from a drastic reduction in integrated Pederson conductivity in the form of reduced foF2 that is observed in all longitudes.

ResumoWe describe the GRB and all-sky monitor experiment (GAME) mission submitted by a large international collaboration (Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Brazil) in response to the 2012 ESA call for a small mission opportunity for a launch in 2017 and presently under further investigation for subsequent opportunities. The general scientific objective is to perform measurements of key importance for GRB science and to provide the wide astrophysical community of an advanced X-ray all-sky monitoring system. The proposed payload was based on silicon drift detectors (<1-50 keV), CdZnTe (CZT) detectors (<15-200 keV) and crystal scintillators in phoswich (NaI/CsI) configuration (<20 keV-20 MeV), three well established technologies, for a total weight of <250 kg and a required power of <240 W. Such instrumentation allows a unique, unprecedented and very powerful combination of large field of view (3-4 sr), a broad energy band extending from <1 keV up to <20 MeV, an energy resolution as good as <250 eV in the 1-30 keV energy range, a source location accuracy of <1 arcmin. The mission profile included a launch (e.g. by Vega) into a low Earth orbit, a baseline sky scanning mode plus pointed observations of regions of particular interest, data transmission to ground via X-band (4.8 Gb/orbit, Alcantara and Malindi ground stations), and prompt transmission of GRB/transient triggers.

Solar cycle 23
EUV proxies
ResumoThe effect of including solar cycle 23 in foF2 trend estimation is assessed using experimental values for Slough (51.5 degrees N, 359.4 degrees E) and Kokobunji (35.7 degrees N, 139.5 degrees E), and values obtained from two models: (1) the Sheffield University Plasmasphere-Ionosphere model, SUPIM, and (2) the International Reference Ionosphere, IRI. The dominant influence on the F2 layer is solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, evinced by the almost 90\% variance of its parameters explained by solar EUV proxies such as the solar activity indices Rz and F10.7. This makes necessary to filter out solar activity effects prior to long-term trend estimation. Solar cycle 23 seems to have had an EUV emission different from that deduced from traditional solar EUV proxies. During maximum and descending phase of the cycle, Rz and F10.7 seem to underestimate EUV solar radiation, while during minimum, they overestimate EUV levels. Including this solar cycle in trend estimations then, and using traditional filtering techniques, may induce some spurious results. In the present work, filtering is done in the usual way considering the residuals of the linear regression between foF2 and F10.7, for both experimental and modeled values. foF2 trends become less negative as we include years after 2000, since foF2 systematically exceeds the values predicted by a linear fit between foF2 and F10.7. Trends become more negative again when solar cycle 23 minimum is included, since for this period, foF2 is systematically lower than values predicted by the linear fit. foF2 trends assessed with modeled foF2 values are less strong than those obtained with experimental foF2 values and more stable as solar cycle 23 is included in the trend estimation. Modeled trends may be thought of as a `zero level' trend due to the assumptions made in the process of trend estimation considering also that we are not dealing with ideal conditions or infinite time series.

ResumoInvestigations on the variations of the virtual height (h'F) of the base of the F-layer over Thumba (8.5°N, 77°E, dip lat 0.5°N) in 2002 (high solar activity) and 2008 (very low solar activity) under quiet geomagnetic conditions show characteristic pre-midnight rise of h. '. F in the June solstice of 2008. Comparison of the h. '. F variations in 2008 over Thumba and Fortaleza (3.9°S, 38.4°W, dip lat 1.8°S), Brazil, reveals that the pre-midnight rise of h'F is significantly more over Thumba during the June solstice. Drift measurements on-board the Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System (C/NOFS) satellite elicit that the midnight upward drift over the Indian sector during the northern summer months of 2009 is the largest, a feature that significantly weakens in 2010. C/NOFS measurements also confirm the electro-dynamical nature of the pre-midnight h. '. F rise over the Indian sector in the June solstice during the low solar activity. As the equatorial F-region vertical drifts during nighttime are controlled by E-region dynamo driven by tidal wind system, systematic wind measurements at upper mesospheric heights by an MF radar (1.98. MHz) from Tirunelveli (8.7°N, 77.8°E, dip lat 0.5°S), India, during 2000-2011 are used to derive the tidal components. This reveals that the phases of both the meridional and zonal components of the diurnal tide regress while the phase of the meridional component of the semidiurnal tide significantly advances with decreasing solar activity with concomitant increases in amplitudes during the summer months. These observations suggest the possible semidiurnal tidal influence on the pre-midnight h'F rise over the Indian sector in the June solstice during low solar activity.

ResumoMean winds and tidal signatures in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region are derived from meteor radar observations at three sites around 22 degrees S acquired in 2005. The observed differences of mean winds and tides are discussed in relation to the meteorological situation in the lower atmosphere and the possible generation of non-migrating tides. The longitudinally well separated radar sites allowed the evaluation of the migrating tidal component. The seasonal variation of signatures of the diurnal tide derived from ground-based radar observations, TIDI measurements aboard TIMED satellite, and model results obtained with HAMMONIA (Hamburg Model of the Neutral and Ionized Atmosphere) are compared. The ground-based, satellite, and model results of the total diurnal tide are in good agreement. The same is true for the migrating diurnal tide obtained from the radar observations, TIDI observations and from the model studies of HAMMONIA and GSVVM00 (Global Scale Wave Model).

ResumoA comparative study of intraseasonal oscillations (ISO) in the period range 20-110 days is carried out in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) zonal wind at two low latitude stations, Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W) and Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S, 45°W) located far from the convective anomaly region. Considerable seasonal and interannual variability is observed. The ISO in the MLT and lower atmosphere are found to be well correlated during winter and spring indicating a coupling of the atmospheric regions through the ISO. On the other hand, relatively less correlation during summer and fall may suggest a dominance of the in situ excitation of the ISO in the MLT relative to the lower atmospheric contribution. The correlation between the MLT and lower atmosphere is found to be a little higher at Cachoeira Paulista than Cariri. The ISO in the MLT shows good correlation between the two stations, but correlation is insignificant in the case of lower atmosphere. The ISO is most prominent in the upper troposphere, upper stratosphere and MLT. The waves responsible for communicating the ISO signature from the troposphere to the middle atmosphere in the tropics are believed to refract through mid-latitudes in course of their propagation. An evident height variation of the high amplitude ISO in the upper troposphere is observed with a clear annual oscillation at Cariri. The observed behaviors of the ISO at the present sites are discussed in the light of plausible physical mechanisms.

ResumoIn this paper we present the capability of a new network of field mill sensors to monitor the atmospheric electric field at various locations in South America; we also show some early results. The main objective of the new network is to obtain the characteristic Universal Time diurnal curve of the atmospheric electric field in fair weather, known as the Carnegie curve. The Carnegie curve is closely related to the current sources flowing in the Global Atmospheric Electric Circuit so that another goal is the study of this relationship on various time scales (transient/monthly/seasonal/annual). Also, by operating this new network, we may also study departures of the Carnegie curve from its long term average value related to various solar, geophysical and atmospheric phenomena such as the solar cycle, solar flares and energetic charged particles, galactic cosmic rays, seismic activity and specific meteorological events. We then expect to have a better understanding of the influence of these phenomena on the Global Atmospheric Electric Circuit and its time-varying behavior.

ResumoWe study the solar cycle and seasonal dependences of high-intensity, long-duration, continuous AE activity (HILDCAA) events and associated solar wind/interplanetary external drivers for ~312 solar cycle period, from 1975 to 2011. 99 HILDCAAs which had simultaneous solar wind/interplanetary data are considered in the present analyses. The peak occurrence frequency of HILDCAAs was found to be in the descending phase of the solar cycle. These events had the strongest time-integrated AE intensities and were coincident with peak occurrences of high-speed solar wind streams. The event initiations were statistically coincident with high-to-slow speed stream interactions, compressions in the solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The latter were corotating interaction regions (CIRs). The signatures of related CIRs were most prominent for the events occurring during the descending and solar minimum phases of the solar cycles. For these events, the solar wind speed increased by ~41% and ~57% across the CIRs, respectively. There was weak or no stream-stream interaction or CIR structure during the ascending and solar maximum phases. HILDCAAs occurring during spring and fall seasons were found to occur preferentially in negative and positive IMF sector regions (toward and away from the Sun), respectively.

ResumoInterplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) can reach the Earth[U+05F3]s magnetosphere causing magnetic disturbances. For monitoring purposes, some satellites measure the interplanetary parameters which are related to energy transfer from solar wind into magnetosphere, while ground-based magnetometers measure the geomagnetic disturbance effects. Data from the ACE satellite and from some representative magnetometers were examined here via discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The increase in the amplitude of wavelet coefficients of solar wind parameters and geomagnetic field data is well-correlated with the arrival of the shock and sheath regions, and the sudden storm commencement and main phase, respectively. As an auxiliary tool to verify the disturbed magnetic fields identified by the DWT, we developed a new approach called effectiveness wavelet coefficient (EWC) methodology. The first interpretation of the results suggests that DWT and EWC can be effectively used to characterize the fluctuations on the solar wind parameters and their contributions to the geomagnetic field. Further, this kind of technique could be implemented in quasi real-time to facilitate the identification of the shock and the passage of the sheath region which sometimes can be followed by geoeffective magnetic clouds. Also, the technique shows to be very useful for the identification of time intervals in the dataset during geomagnetic storms which are associated to interplanetary parameters under very well defined conditions. It allows selecting ideal events for investigation of magnetic reconnection in order to highlight in a more precise manner the mechanisms existing in the electrodynamical coupling between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
