ResumoThe main objective of this work is to analyze the impacts in soil temperature and short-wave radiation balance derived from biomass burning in Rondonia State for 2000-2011 years, using RegCM4 for meteorological modeling. This model requires some input data such as land use and land cover maps (with and without burned areas) and physical parameters such as the surface albedo (separated in photosynthetic active radiation and in shortwave infrared reflectance), leaf area index and the fraction of vegetation cover. Thus, the land use and land cover maps were updated from MCD12A1 product of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. The MOD09 and MYD09 products of MODIS were utilized for the burned areas mapping, obtained from the Linear Spectral Mixture Model (SLMM), segmentation of shadow fraction images and manual editing. The surface albedo and the fraction of vegetation cover data were collected in the fieldwork with FieldSpec Pro equipment and leaf area index was obtained from MYD15A2 and MOD15A2 of MODIS products. The results indicated that the burned areas exhibit significant variability in Rondonia State, especially in 2005, 2010 and 2004 years, and these burnings occur in majority in areas that already have some type of use (areas of vegetation extraction, large animals livestock areas and diverse permanent crops). The albedo values showed a decrease of 16\% with the occurrence of a fire, a factor that causes changes in short-wave radiation balance. These changes occasioned the elevation of soil temperature, which can reach maximums values of 10 degrees C per day, resulting in significant changes in different climatic variables that may alter the local and regional climate.

ResumoThe objective of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of burned areas in Rondônia State, Brazil during the years 2000 to 2011 and evaluate the burned area maps. A Linear Spectral Mixture Model (LSMM) was applied to MODIS surface reflectance images to originate the burned areas maps, which were validated with TM/Landsat 5 and ETM+/Landsat 7 images and field data acquired in August 2013. The validation presented a correlation ranging from 67% to 96% with an average value of 86%. The lower correlation values are related to the distinct spatial resolutions of the MODIS and TM/ETM+ sensors because small burn scars are not detected in MODIS images and higher spatial correlations are related to the presence of large fires, which are better identified in MODIS, increasing the accuracy of the mapping methodology. In addition, the 12-year burned area maps of Rondônia indicate that fires, as a general pattern, occur in areas that have already been converted to some land use, such as vegetal extraction, large animal livestock areas or diversified permanent crops. Furthermore, during the analyzed period, land use conversion associated with climatic events significantly influenced the occurrence of fire in Rondônia and amplified its impacts.

ResumoThe aim of this investigation is to analyze the phenomenology of positive and negative (stepped and dart) leaders observed in natural lightning from digital high-speed video recordings. For that intent we have used four different high-speed cameras operating at frame rates ranging from 1000 or 11,800 frames per second in addition to data from lightning locating systems (BrasilDat and NLDN). All the recordings were GPS time-stamped in order to avoid ambiguities in the analysis, allowing us to estimate the peak current of and the distance to each flash that was detected by one of the lightning locating systems. The data collection was done at different sites in south and southeastern of Brazil, southern Arizona and South Dakota, USA. A total of 62 negative stepped leaders, 76 negative dart leaders and 29 positive leaders were recorded and analyzed. From these data it was possible to calculate the two-dimensional speed of each observed leader, allowing us to obtain its statistical distribution and evaluate whether or not it is related to other characteristics of the associated flash. In the analyzed dataset, the speeds of positive leaders and negative dart leaders follow a lognormal distribution at the 0.05 level (according to the Shapiro-Wilk test). We have also analyzed how the two-dimensional leader speeds change as they approach ground through two different methodologies. The speed of positive leaders showed a clear tendency to increase while negative dart leaders tend to become slower as they approach ground. Negative stepped leaders, on the other hand, can either accelerate as they get closer to ground or present an irregular development (with no clear tendency) throughout their entire development. For all the three leader types no correlation has been found between the return stroke peak current and the average speed of the leader responsible for its initiation. We did find, however, that dart leaders preceded by longer interstroke intervals cannot present speeds of the order of 107 m s- 1. Finally, we have analyzed the impact of recoil activity during positive leaders over their average speed and the return stroke peak current. Even though the analysis considering the leader speed was not conclusive it was possible to show that there is no apparent minimum or maximum peak current value for return strokes preceded by leaders with or without recoil activity (considering the most common range of values in literature, 20-80 kA). © 2013 Elsevier B.V. ResumoThe last few decades have been marked by important changes in the Brazilian agriculture, especially with respect to crop-management practices. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of cropping systems in a typical agricultural river basin in the state of Mato Grosso. Landsat satellite images and time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer vegetation index profiles were analyzed from 2000 to 2010. First, we assessed the horizontal expansion that occurred in the agricultural areas. Subsequently, using the product MOD13Q1, some metrics were established to identify the vertical intensification of soil use (single-or double-cropping systems). Results showed stagnation in the expansion of new deforested areas for agriculture in the 2003/2004 growing season, with simultaneous vertical intensification of agriculture. The adoption of the double-cropping system (e. g., soybean/corn and soybean/cotton) expanded by 266\% during the studied period and reached 56\% of the croplands in the 2009/2010 growing season.

ResumoWe show that the vegetation canopy of the Amazon rainforest is highly sensitive to changes in precipitation patterns and that reduction in rainfall since 2000 has diminished vegetation greenness across large parts of Amazonia. Large-scale directional declines in vegetation greenness may indicate decreases in carbon uptake and substantial changes in the energy balance of the Amazon. We use improved estimates of surface reflectance from satellite data to show a close link between reductions in annual precipitation, El Nino southern oscillation events, and photosynthetic activity across tropical and subtropical Amazonia. We report that, since the year 2000, precipitation has declined across 69\% of the tropical evergreen forest (5.4 million km(2)) and across 80\% of the subtropical grasslands (3.3 million km(2)). These reductions, which coincided with a decline in terrestrial water storage, account for about 55\% of a satellite-observed widespread decline in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). During El Nino events, NDVI was reduced about 16.6\% across an area of up to 1.6 million km(2) compared with average conditions. Several global circulation models suggest that a rise in equatorial sea surface temperature and related displacement of the intertropical convergence zone could lead to considerable drying of tropical forests in the 21st century. Our results provide evidence that persistent drying could degrade Amazonian forest canopies, which would have cascading effects on global carbon and climate dynamics.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted in the National Forest of Ipanema, sustainable conservation in the municipality of Iperó-SP, in order to quantify and compare the net precipitation and interception of rain in three different forest stands, which are: Eucalyptus cloeziana, Pinus caribea var. hondurensis and Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Therefore, we carried out the monitoring of throughfall, stemflow, interception and gross precipitation in each forest type, over the period November 2009 to May 2010. The study revealed the throughfall of 86.2%, 85.0% and 77.2%; intercept of 13.8%, 15.0% and 22.8% in relation to gross precipitation in Eucalyptus cloeziana, Pinus caribea var. hondurensis and Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, respectively. The influence of the forests in the distribution of precipitation showed significant difference only for the process of interception between Floresta Estacional Semidecidual and others.

ResumoIn this work it was studied th e polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) production, especially DHA, from Thraustochytrium sp. ATCC 26185, under different total nitrogen (TN) availability. Three different TN conditions were evaluated: two with initial concentrations of 2.4 g/L and 0.8 g/L, and the third in a fed-batch process with a rate of 0.009 g/L.h. For each experiment the biomass, glucose, TN and PUFAs were determined. The major composition of the PUFAs in Thraustochytrium sp. ATCC 26185 cell biomass were DPA É6 (21-25 %) and DHA (69-73 %), regardless of the type and time of culture. The maximum cell concentration (30.2 g/L) was obtained using 2.4 g/L TN in 168 h of culture. With this same concentration of TN it was possible to produce the highest concentration of DHA (1.16 g/L) in 120 h of culture, demonstrating that the growth of Thraustochytrium sp. ATCC 26185 and yield of PUFAs are dependent on the source concentration of TN available for consumption of this oleaginous microorganism, as well as culture time.

ResumoObservational data obtained at two wind towers located at the Alagoas State (Northeast of Brazil - NEB) were used to evaluate the influence of horizontal grid setup on the reliability of wind estimates provided by the numerical weather prediction model BRAMS. Statistical analysis were performed to evaluate the model skill in reproducing the temporal evolution, frequency distribution and the mean daily cycle of the wind observations in both locations. The study was performed for the two typical climate seasons: the rainy (May/2008) and the dry one (November/2008). The results demonstrated that the deviations of wind estimates gets lower if the horizontal grid resolution is increased from 8 km to 2 km. No results improvement occurred when using horizontal grid resolution higher than 2 km. The confiability on wind speed estimates were higher at Girau do Ponciano (GRP), located in the continental area where the sea breeze is less important to the atmospheric dynamic. The results demonstrate that wind data observations play an important role in defining the best configuration and parameterization model to better estimates the availability of wind energy on a specific region, particularly for NEB.

ResumoLand cover change in the Neotropics represents one of the major drivers of global environmental change. Several models have been proposed to explore future trajectories of land use and cover change, particularly in the Amazon. Despite the remarkable development of these tools, model results are still surrounded by uncertainties. None of the model projections available in the literature plausibly captured the overall trajectory of land use and cover change that has been observed in the Amazon over the last decade. In this context, this study aims to review and analyze the general structure of the land use models that have most recently been used to explore land use change in the Amazon, seeking to investigate methodological factors that could explain the divergence between the observed and projected rates, paying special attention to the land demand calculations. Based on this review, the primary limitations inherent to this type of model and the extent to which these limitations can affect the consistency of the projections will also be analyzed. Finally, we discuss potential drivers that could have influenced the recent dynamic of the land use system in the Amazon and produced the unforeseen land cover change trajectory observed in this period. In a complementary way, the primary challenges of the new generation of land use models for the Amazon are synthesized. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

ResumoThe present paper is concerned with the search for orbits that have potential to require low fuel consumption for station-keeping maneuvers for constellations of satellites. The method used to study this problem is based on the integral over the time of the undesired perturbing forces. This integral measures the change of velocity caused by the perturbation forces acting on the satellite, so mapping orbits that are less perturbed, which generates good candidates for orbits that requires low fuel consumption for station-keeping maneuvers. The integral over the time depends only on the orbit of the spacecraft and the dynamical system considered. The type of engine and the control technique applied to the spacecraft are not considered to search for those orbits. It can be a good strategy to be applied for a first mapping of orbits. For this search, it is analyzed the integral of orbits with different values of the Keplerian elements in order to find the best ones with respect to this criterion. The perturbations considered are the ones caused by the third body, which includes the Sun and the Moon, and the J2 term of the geopotential. The results presented here show numerical simulations to obtain the integral of those perturbing forces for different orbits. The GPS and the Molniya constellations are used as examples for those calculations.
