ResumoV-type asteroids are associated with basaltic composition, and are supposed to be fragments of crust of differentiated objects. Most V-type asteroids in the main belt are found in the inner main belt, and are either current members of the Vesta dynamical family (Vestoids), or past members that drifted away. However, several V-type photometric candidates have been recently identified in the central and outer main belt. The origin of this large population of V-type objects is not well understood. Since it seems unlikely that Vestoids crossing the 3J:-1A mean-motion resonance with Jupiter could account for the whole population of V-type asteroids in the central and outer main belt, origin from local sources, such as the parent bodies of the Eunomia, and of the Merxia and Agnia asteroid families, has been proposed as an alternative mechanism. In this work, we investigated the dynamical evolution of the V-type photometric candidates in the central main belt, under the effect of gravitational and non-gravitational forces. Our results showthat dynamical evolution from the parent bodies of the Eunomia and Merxia/Agnia families on time-scales of 2 Byr or more could be responsible for the current orbital location of most of the low-inclined V-type asteroids.

ResumoOne issue the design team has to face in the process of building a new spacecraft, is to define its mechanical and electrical architecture. The choice of where to place the spacecraft´s electronic equipment is a complex task, since it involves simultaneously many factors, such as the spacecraft´s required position of center of mass, moments of inertia, equipment heat dissipation, integration and servicing issues, among others. Since this is a multidisciplinary task, the early positioning of the spacecraft's equipment is usually done "manually" by a group of system engineers, heavily based on their experience. It is an interactive process that takes time and hence, as soon as a feasible design is found, it becomes the baseline. This precludes a broader exploration of the design space, which may lead to a suboptimal solution, or worse to a design that will have to be modified later. Recently, it has been shown the potential benefits of automating the process of spacecraft´s equipment layout using optimization techniques. In this paper, a prototype of an Excel® based tool for multidisciplinary spacecraft equipment layout conception is described. Provided the geometric dimensions, mass and heat dissipation of the equipment, and the available positioning area, the tool can automatically generate many possible trade-off solutions for the layout. It allows the user to set specific equipment to specific areas of positioning, and different combinations of objective functions can be used to drive the design. The features of the tool are shown in a simplified three dimensional problem.

ResumoThe software in satellite applications has become increasingly larger, more complex and more integrated, so its verification and validation require exploration of new approaches. In this paper we present a Model-Based Testing (MBT) approach applied to the Communication Module of the ITASAT-1 university satellite. The models are Finite State Machines (FSM) representing the software behavior. In order to manage the difficulties to model the software behavior the approach employs the Conformance and Fault Injection (CoFI) testing methodology associated with the JPlavisFSM tool in the real context of a satellite's critical software. The former advises the modularization of the modelling into different types of behavior into different FSMs, while the latter integrates several FSM-based methods to derive test cases, provides facilities to design and to check properties of the models and computes metrics. The main result of this case study was the evaluation of the drawbacks on the design of the testing models supported by CoFI and JPlavisFSM. The models, test sets, metrics with the application of our approach applied to the Communication Module are presented. The paper discusses the benefits as well as the points requiring new researches.

ResumoTransverse thermal conductivity of an aluminum honeycomb panel is evaluated by experimental, analytical and computational approaches. The main objective of this work is to investigate the best thermal modeling of a honeycomb panel for a satellite. The test was conducted in a thermal vacuum chamber and the numerical results were obtained by Thermal Desktop®, RadCAD® and SINDA/FLUINT thermal analyzer. Numerical results and analytical models were compared to experimental data, in order to validate the numerical model and evaluate the more appropriated analytical model. The panel was modeled as an element with effective thermal conductivities in each direction, and two nodal division approaches were investigated: centered nodes and edge nodes configurations. Analytical models have shown a good agreement with experimental data. The analytical model (of the transverse thermal conductivity of the aluminum honeycomb panel) based on the density and thermal conductivity of core's material presents just a slight deviation compared to experimental results. Regarding to numerical analyses, the results have shown that the analysis method as well as nodal breakdown are extremely important to reach acceptable results, and the edge nodes configuration has presented low computational cost, since a smaller amount of nodes is required to achieve temperature convergence, compared to centered nodes configuration. © 2014 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.

ResumoAmazonia-1 is a Brazilian remote sensing satellite providing mainly images, in order to observe and monitor deforestation, especially in the Amazon region. This paper describes the thermal control design, which uses passive and active concepts. The active thermal control is based on heaters regulated by software via thermistors. The passive thermal control consists of multi-layer insulation blankets and radiators, paints, surface finishes to maintain temperature level of the overall carrier components within an acceptable value. The thermal control design is supported by thermal analysis using thermal mathematical model. The temperatures and heater power are predicted for critical cases.

ResumoA particle filter, specifically a Bayesian bootstrap filter algorithm, is applied for estimating the state vector that characterizes the orbit of a satellite, using a set of GPS measurements. The development will be evaluated through performance and computational cost, comparing the bootstrap algorithm results against the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) solution for the same problem. The orbit determination is a nonlinear problem, with respect to the dynamics and the measurements equations, in which the disturbing forces and the measurements are not easily modeled. It consists essentially of estimating values that completely specify the body trajectory in the space, processing a set of measurements related to this body. Such observations can be collected through a tracking network grounded on Earth or through sensors, like GPS receivers onboard the satellite. The GPS is a wide spread system that allows computation of orbits for artificial Earth satellites by providing many redundant measurements (pseudo-ranges). The bootstrap filter is proposed for implementing recursive Bayesian filters. It is a statistical, brute-force approach to estimation that often works well for systems that are highly nonlinear. Here, the bootstrap particle filter will be implemented with resampling and roughening, a scheme for combating the reduction in the number of truly distinct sample values.

ResumoHeat pipes are two-phase heat transfer devices with high thermal capacity, able to transport large quantities of heat with little difference between the temperature of the evaporation and condensation sections, presenting a highly efficient heat transfer process. This technology has found increasing applications in improving the thermal performance and heat dissipation of electronics and other components in aerospace missions (satellites and spacecrafts) and it is widely used today. Also, heat pipes have found applications to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers in many industrial environments. The use of heat pipes in heat exchangers allows the development of more compact and efficient equipments when compared to traditional heat exchangers. For some applications, such as heat recovery in industrial process, the use of the heat pipes on heat exchangers presents to be rather interesting due to an increased efficiency along with more compact equipments. Mid-level temperature heat pipes have found applications both in aerospace and industry, and their development has found interest in those areas. Focusing this scenario, this paper presents and investigation on the operation of heat pipes at designed for medium level temperatures (up to 200 °C) using water as working fluids. Testing results of three different configurations of heat pipes using those working fluids have shown reliable operation when cyclic heat loads are applied, with fast responses. The obtained results show that the heat pipes' configurations investigated are able to reach thermal conductances up to 18 W/oC and could be used in several industrial (for heat recovering systems) and aerospace applications when those levels of temperature are required.

ResumoSurveillance systems have presented to be important applications for high performance thermal control devices, especially passive ones using heat pipe technology. This is usually applied when the heat source is located far from the heat sink and the use of liquid cooling or any other active thermal control system is not possible. Design and application of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) and heat pipes become an indicated solution especially for restricted areas for integration. This investigation is focused on presenting the thermal control management of electronic components of a surveillance system using an open loop PHP with conventional heat pipes. Despite the relatively high temperature differences observed between the heat source and sink (up to 25 °C), the open loop PHP was able to transport the rejected heat (up to 40 W) from the electronic components to a remote heat dissipation area, while keeping their temperatures within the required range (below 80 °C) with relatively high thermal conductances (up to 1.6 W/°C). The heat pipe has demonstrated the capability of spreading the heat, positively affecting the PHP operation, as this combined solution has proven to be stable and reliable with promising results.

ResumoThe concept of frozen orbit has been applied in space missions mainly for orbital tracking and control purposes. This type of orbit is important for orbit design because it is characterized by keeping the argument of perigee and eccentricity constant on average, so that, for a given latitude, the satellite always passes at the same altitude, benefiting the users through this regularity. Here, the system of nonlinear differential equations describing the motion is studied, and the effects of geopotential and atmospheric drag perturbations on frozen orbits are taken into account. Explicit analytical expressions for secular and long period perturbations terms are obtained for the eccentricity and the argument of perigee. The classical equations of Brouwer and Brouwer and Hori theories are used. Nonsingular variables approach is used, which allows obtaining more precise previsions for CBERS (China Brazil Earth Resources Satellite) satellites family and similar satellites (SPOT, Landsat, ERS, and IRS) orbital evolution. © 2014 Paula Cristiane Pinto Mesquita Pardal et al.

ResumoSpace missions to visit the natural satellite of Jupiter, Europa, constitute an important topic in space activities today, because missions to this moon are under study now. Several considerations have to be made for these missions. The present paper searches for less perturbed circular orbits around Europa. This search is made based on the total effects of the perturbing forces over the time, evaluated by the integral of those forces over the time. This value depends on the dynamical model and on the orbit of the spacecraft. The perturbing forces considered are the third-body perturbation that comes from Jupiter and the J 2, J 3, and C 22 terms of the gravitational potential of Europa. Several numerical studies are performed and the results show the locations of the less perturbed orbits. Using those results, it is possible to find near-circular frozen orbits with smaller amplitudes of variations of the orbital elements.
