ResumoThis paper presents a method for mapping and assessing burned areas at a regional scale, using a systematic sample of medium spatial resolution satellite images (Landsat). The State of Mato Grosso, located in the Brazilian Amazon region, comprising an area of approximately 903,366 km, was selected for this study. 77 sample sites (20km x 20km in size) located at each full degree confluence of latitude and longitude were analyzed. The results showed that 52,663 km or approximately 5.8% of the State land cover was burned in 2010. Our method produced results comparable with PanAmazonia Project data and useful for evaluating burned area products based on coarse spatial resolution imagery like MODIS or SPOT-VEGETATION.

ResumoThe study examined the potential of two unmixing approaches for deriving crop-specific normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) profiles so that upon availability of Project for On-Board Autonomy - Vegetation (PROBA-V) imagery in winter 2013, this new data set can be combined with existing Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre - VEGETATION (SPOT-VGT) data despite the differences in spatial resolution (300 m of PROBA-V versus 1 km of SPOT-VGT). To study the problem, two data sets were analysed: (1) a set of 10 temporal NDVI images, with 300 and 1000 m spatial resolution, from the state of São Paulo (Brazil) synthesized from 30 m Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images, and (2) a corresponding set of 10 observed Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images (250 m spatial resolution). To mimic the influence of noise on the retrieval accuracy, different sensor/atmospheric noise levels were applied to the first data set. For the unmixing analysis, a high-resolution land-cover (LC) map was used. The LC map was derived beforehand using a different set of Landsat TM images. The map distinguishes nine classes, with four different sugarcane stages, two agricultural sub-classes, plus forest, pasture, and urban/water. Unmixing aiming at the retrieval of crop-specific NDVI profiles was done at administrative level. For the synthesized data set it was demonstrated that the 'true' NDVI temporal profiles of different land-cover classes (from 30 m TM data) can generally be retrieved with high accuracy. The two simulated sensors (PROBA-V and SPOT-VGT) and the two unmixing algorithms gave similar results. Analysing the MODIS data set, we also found a good correspondence between the modelled NDVI profiles (both approaches) and the (true) Landsat temporal endmembers.

ResumoForest inventory studies in the Amazon indicate a large terrestrial carbon sink. However, field plots may fail to represent forest mortality processes at landscape-scales of tropical forests. Here we characterize the frequency distribution of disturbance events in natural forests from 0.01 ha to 2,651 ha size throughout Amazonia using a novel combination of forest inventory, airborne lidar and satellite remote sensing data. We find that small-scale mortality events are responsible for aboveground biomass losses of ~1.7 Pg C y -1 over the entire Amazon region. We also find that intermediate-scale disturbances account for losses of ~0.2 Pg C y-1, and that the largest-scale disturbances as a result of blow-downs only account for losses of ~0.004 Pg C y-1. Simulation of growth and mortality indicates that even when all carbon losses from intermediate and large-scale disturbances are considered, these are outweighed by the net biomass accumulation by tree growth, supporting the inference of an Amazon carbon sink.

ResumoCurrent methods for modelling burnt area in dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) involve complex fire spread calculations, which rely on many inputs, including fuel characteristics, wind speed and countless parameters. They are therefore susceptible to large uncertainties through error propagation, but undeniably useful for modelling specific, small-scale burns. Using observed fractal distributions of fire scars in Brazilian Amazonia in 2005, we propose an alternative burnt area model for tropical forests, with fire counts as sole input and few parameters. This model is intended for predicting large-scale burnt area rather than looking at individual fire events. A simple parameterization of a tapered fractal distribution is calibrated at multiple spatial resolutions using a satellite-derived burnt area map. The model is capable of accurately reproducing the total area burnt (16 387 km2) and its spatial distribution. When tested pan-tropically using the MODIS MCD14ML active fire product, the model accurately predicts temporal and spatial fire trends, but the magnitude of the differences between these estimates and the GFED3.1 burnt area products varies per continent. © Author(s) 2014.

ResumoDifferentiation between benthic habitats, particularly seagrass and macroalgae, using satellite data is complicated because of water column effects plus the presence of chlorophyll-a in both seagrass and algae that result in similar spectral patterns. Hyperspectral imager for the coastal ocean data over the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA, was used to develop two benthic classification models, SlopeRED and SlopeNIR. Their performance was compared with iterative self-organizing data analysis technique and spectral angle mapping classification methods. The slope models provided greater overall accuracies (63-64%) and were able to distinguish between seagrass and macroalgae substrates more accurately compared to the results obtained using the other classifications methods.

mangrove areas
ResumoIn Brazil, despite the existence of various environmental laws to protect mangroves, this ecosystem has been affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities. The Sao Francisco River Estuary (SFRE, Brazil Northeast) comprises significant mangrove forests, important for human populations, and is included in an Environmental Protected Area of sustainable use which does not have a management plan. This work assessed and mapped anthropogenic activities on the mangroves of this estuary and provided a number of guidelines for a local management plan. Satellite images (SPOT 5 and CBERS 2B) of 2008 were processed and a land use/cover map (study area size: 192.4 km(2)) produced and verified by fieldwork. About 93\% (178.8 km(2)) of the study area is occupied by natural cover such as: sandy coastal vegetation (147.3 km(2), 77\%), mangroves (30.1 km(2), 15.7\%) and intertidal flats (1.4 km(2), 0.7\%), while 7\% (13.6 km(2)) is occupied by human activities as aquaculture (4.5 km(2), 2.4\%) and agriculture (9 km2, 4.7\%). These uses are spatially distributed within mangroves, accounting for approximately one quarter (7.8 km(2)) of its area, which may indicate the conversion of these forests. Shrimp farming is the main anthropogenic activity, occupying the highest area and occurring within the tallest Rhizophora mangle forests (tree height >15 m). We recommend that a management plan for the SFRE considers: the implementation of sustainable aquaculture practices (e.g. small-scale without deforestation of mangroves, use of native species, effluent treatment, socio-economic equity), strategies for the compliance of the laws regarding shrimp farming license and operation and support the creation of community-based cooperatives for the execution of sustainable aquaculture.

ResumoCovering almost a quarter of Brazil, the Cerrado is the world's most biologically rich tropical savanna. Fire is an integral part of the Cerrado but current land use and agricultural practices have been changing fire regimes, with undesirable consequences for the preservation of biodiversity. In this study, fire frequency and fire return intervals were modelled over a 12-year time series (1997-2008) for the Jalapão State Park, a protected area in the north of the Cerrado, based on burned area maps derived from Landsat imagery. Burned areas were classified using object based image analysis. Fire data were modelled with the discrete lognormal model and the estimated parameters were used to calculate fire interval, fire survival and hazard of burning distributions, for seven major land cover types. Over the study period, an area equivalent to four times the size of Jalapão State Park burned and the mean annual area burned was 34%. Median fire intervals were generally short, ranging from three to six years. Shrub savannas had the shortest fire intervals, and dense woodlands the longest. Because fires in the Cerrado are strongly responsive to fuel age in the first three to four years following a fire, early dry season patch mosaic burning may be used to reduce the extent of area burned and the severity of fire effects. © 2014 Pereira Júnior et al.

These changes are directly related to the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, primarily CO2. Assessing seasonal forest growth responses to climate is of utmost importance because woody tissues, produced by photosynthesis from atmospheric CO2, water and light, constitute the main component of carbon sequestration in the forest ecosystem. In this paper, we combine intra-annual tree growth measurements from published tree growth data and the corresponding monthly climate data for 25 pan-tropical forest sites. This meta-analysis is designed to find the shared climate drivers of tree growth and their relative importance across pan-tropical forests in order to improve carbon uptake models in a global change context. Tree growth reveals significant intra-annual seasonality at seasonally dry sites or in wet tropical forests. Of the overall variation in tree growth, 28.7% was explained by the site effect, i.e. the tree growth average per site. The best predictive model included four climate variables: precipitation, solar radiation (estimated with extrasolar radiation reaching the atmosphere), temperature amplitude and relative soil water content. This model explained more than 50% of the tree growth variations across tropical forests. Precipitation and solar radiation are the main seasonal drivers of tree growth, causing 19.8% and 16.3% of the tree growth variations. Both have a significant positive association with tree growth. These findings suggest that forest productivity due to tropical tree growth will be reduced in the future if climate extremes, such as droughts, become more frequent.

ResumoAlthough hyperspectral images acquired by on-board satellites provide information from a wide range of wavelengths in the spectrum, the obtained information is usually highly correlated. This paper proposes a novel framework to reduce the computation cost for large amounts of data based on the efficiency of the optimum-path forest (OPF) classifier and the power of metaheuristic algorithms to solve combinatorial optimizations. Simulations on two public data sets have shown that the proposed framework can indeed improve the effectiveness of the OPF and considerably reduce data storage costs.

ResumoMonitoring chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations is important for the management of water quality, because it is a good indicator of the eutrophication level in an aquatic system. Thus, our main purpose was to develop an alternative technique to monitor chl-a in time and space through remote sensing techniques. However, one of the limitations of remote sensing is the resolution. To achieve a high temporal resolution and medium space resolution, we used the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 500-m reflectance product, MOD09GA, and limnological parameters from the Itumbiara Reservoir. With these data, an empirical (O14a) and semi-empirical (O14b) algorithm were developed. Algorithms were cross-calibrated and validated using three datasets: one for each campaign and a third consisting of a combination of the two individual campaigns. Algorithm O14a produced the best validation with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 30.4%, whereas O14b produced an RMSE of 32.41% using the mixed dataset calibration. O14a was applied to MOD09GA to build a time series for the reservoir for the year of 2009. The time-series analysis revealed that there were occurrences of algal blooms in the summer that were likely related to the additional input of nutrients caused by rainfall runoff. During the winter, however, the few observed algal blooms events were related to periods of atmospheric meteorological variations that represented an enhanced external influence on the processes of mixing and stratification of the water column. Finally, the use of remote sensing techniques can be an important tool for policy makers, environmental managers and the scientific community with which to monitor water quality.
