ResumoDue to its large territory, Brazil relies on space systems to perform a myriad of supporting activities. Space systems design requires strong modeling and simulations techniques for achieving high performance. This article describes the development of a goal-driven user interface (UI) for spacecraft distributed simulations using a service oriented paradigm and supporting different space missions. From usability problems with traditional simulators UIs, described by satellite subsystem design engineers, this work proposes three dimensional visualization, natural interaction techniques, virtual and augmented reality as well as interaction with touch-screen and gesture recognitions. This research uses an open source C/C++ toolkit, designed to provide interactivity, networking and scripting capabilities for simulator developers, this facilitates in providing specific input or output driver engines. Finally, some actual release pictures and information which includes singletouch interaction in the Smart Board Screen and some further developments are described for future work.

ResumoThe study estimated, for the first time, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with cattle raising in Brazil, focusing on the period from 2003 to 2008 and the three principal sources: 1) portion of deforestation resulting in pasture establishment and subsequent burning of felled vegetation; 2) pasture burning; and 3) bovine enteric fermentation. Deforestation for pasture establishment was only considered for the Amazon and Cerrado. Emissions from pasture burning and enteric fermentation were accounted for the entire country. The consolidated emissions estimate lies between approximately 813 Mt CO2eq in 2008 (smallest value) and approximately 1,090 Mt CO2eq in 2003 (greatest value). The total emissions associated with Amazon cattle ranching ranged from 499 to 775 Mt CO2eq, that of the Cerrado from 229 to 231 Mt CO2eq, and that of the rest of the country between 84 and 87 Mt CO2eq. The full set of emissions originating from cattle raising is responsible for approximately half of all Brazilian emissions (estimated to be approximately 1,055 Mt CO2eq in 2005), even without considering cattle related sources not explicitly estimated in this study, such as energy use for transport and refrigeration along the beef and derivatives supply chain. The potential for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions offered by the Brazilian cattle industry is very high and might constitute Brazils most important opportunity for emissions mitigation. The study offers a series of policy recommendations for mitigation that can be implemented by public and private administrators at a low cost relative to other greenhouse gas reduction options.

ResumoThere has been some discussion concerning the nature of luminosity pulses observed during the continuing currents of positive cloud-to-ground flashes. It still undefined whether or not these pulses can be considered M components when compared to similar events observed in negative flashes. In the present paper we expand this discussion by analyzing electric field waveforms associated with channel luminosity enhancements of both negative and positive ground flashes. Typically, negative M components are preceded by high-frequency pulses similar to those that can are associated to recoil leaders that are visible below cloud base. On the other hand, luminous processes in positive flashes (similar to M components) did not present a particularly common electric field signature, and no pulses could be positively correlated to their inception inside the cloud. We believe that this polarity asymmetry favors previous theories on the production of negative M components according to the bidirectional leader model. The distinctive features of the positive M components suggest that they are related to different processes.

ResumoThe first observations of UV (290-400 nm) ever made at an agro-meteorological/radiometric station located in the metropolitan region of Maceió (9280S, 35490W, 127 m), Northeast Brazil, during 2008 are reported in this work. Solar UV radiation variability in different time scales and its fractional composition in the global solar radiation (G), that is, FUV = UV/G is investigated under different sky conditions. The maximum daily UV solar irradiation (HdUV) was 0.85 MJ m2 and the annual average 0.55 MJ m2. It was noticed that the largest contribution to the annual variation of the daily totals of UV are attributed to cloudiness than seasonality. Under partially cloudy sky, multi reflection was responsible for an increase of 11.1 and 18.8% in the UV levels, relatively to clear days. FUV is inversely proportional to the global atmospheric transmittance (KT); the daily percentage variation of FUV was in the range of 2.33 to 2.95% in clear days and from 2.60 to 3.59% in cloudy days, with the annual daily average value of 2.8%. Linear empirical relations between the UV and G components for hourly and daily intervals under different KT intervals were established and recommended, with the coefficient of determination (R2) generally above 0.91.

ResumoSchonland et al. (Progressive lightning, 6, Proc. Roy. Soc. (London), A168, 455-469, 1938), in their seminal streak camera studies of lightning, have identified four events of a peculiar type of negative stepped leader that they termed β2, a rather rare variant of the type β leader and in it the second and slower stage of the leader is associated with the appearance of one or more fast dart streamers, which travel rapidly down from the cloud along the previously formed track and cease when they have caught up with the slower leader-tip. During two different campaigns between 2007 and 2011 in Tucson, Arizona, USA, and in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil, we recorded seven downward leaders that fit in the type β2 description given by Schonland et al. (1938). All cases occurred between about 5 and 32 km from a high-speed camera that was operating at 4000 frames per second and three of them could also have their electric field changes measured. All the dart streamers that we observed had speeds between 106 and 107 m s-1, in agreement with previous observations of recoil leaders (RLs). Also, during the development of the three cases whose electric field change data was available it was possible to identify a sequence of microsecond-scale pulses preceding the development of the Considering the similarities in the optical and electric field signatures of both phenomena, we propose that the type β2 negative leaders are the visible manifestation of the development of RLs that were initiated inside the cloud and propagate below the cloud-base during the development of a bipolar, bidirectional leader that precedes a lightning flash to ground. The RLs are initiated in and propagate through channels that were previously ionized by the in-cloud positive portion of a bidirectional leader, eventually connecting to one of its active branches. When they do an intense return pulse of luminosity that optically appears as the dart streamer reported by Schonland et al. (1938) is produced and propagates until it reaches the lower tip of the negative downward portion. After the RL process is completed the downward negative stepped leader portion of the bidirectional leader continues its development normally, with the possibility of occurrence of other RLs, until it reaches the ground and produces a return stroke.

ResumoO presente trabalho tem como objetivo utilizar a versão pontual do modelo Integrated Land Model (INLAND) para simular os fluxos de calor latente e sensível, bem como os fluxos de umidade na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (Santarém/Pará) entre os anos de 2002 e 2004. De uma forma geral, o modelo foi capaz de representar a sazonalidade dessas variáveis apesar dos valores simulados terem sido subestimados quando comparados com trabalhos que utilizaram dados observados para a mesma localidade de estudo, como por exemplo, o fluxo de calor latente foi 37% menor na estação chuvosa e 67% menor na estação seca. ABSTRACT: The present work uses the unidimensional model Integrated Land Model (INLAND) to simulate the flow of latent and sensible heat and moisture fluxes in the Tapajós National Forest (Santarém/Pará) between the years 2002 and 2004. In general, the model was capable of representing the seasonality of these variables despite the values were underestimated when compared with studies using observed data to the same location of study, for example, the latent heat flux was 37% lower in the rainy season and 67% lower in the dry season.

ResumoTropical regions, especially the Amazon region, account for large emissions of methane (CH 4). Here, we present CH 4 observations from two airborne campaigns conducted within the BARCA (Balano Atmosférico Regional de Carbono na Amaznia) project in the Amazon basin in November 2008 (end of the dry season) and May 2009 (end of the wet season). We performed continuous measurements of CH 4 onboard an aircraft for the first time in the Amazon region, covering the whole Amazon basin with over 150 vertical profiles between altitudes of 500 m and 4000 m. The observations support the finding of previous ground-based, airborne, and satellite measurements that the Amazon basin is a large source of atmospheric CH 4. Isotope analysis verified that the majority of emissions can be attributed to CH 4 emissions from wetlands, while urban CH 4 emissions could be also traced back to biogenic origin. A comparison of five TM5 based global CH 4 inversions with the observations clearly indicates that the inversions using SCIAMACHY observations represent the BARCA observations best. The calculated CH 4 flux estimate obtained from the mismatch between observations and TM5-modeled CH 4 fields ranges from 36 to 43 mg m -2 d -1 for the Amazon lowland region.
