ResumoThis paper investigates the main characteristics, results, and factors that facilitate or complicate the implementation and maintenance of quality improvement programmes in the aerospace supply chain organisations in Brazil. This topic is extremely relevant to the scenario of actual aerospace supply chains, considering that organisations in this sector continuously invest in quality improvement programs, but face difficulties in evaluating the strategic effects on the product quality. We use a quantitative research methodology based on a survey for our investigation. We extensively review the literature to develop our measurement instrument and confirm its reliability and validity through an assessment by experts and a pilot test. The research results indicate that most organisations employ programmes based on the ISO 9001 and AS 9100 standards. We further describe the factors that facilitate or complicate the implementation or maintenance of the quality improvement programmes. We find that most organisations intend to either expand the actual programmes or implement new ones. Our findings suggest that, in general, the implementation of quality improvement programmes yield results beyond expectations in terms of product quality and the satisfaction of external customers.

ResumoA heat pipe (HP) experiment named TUCA (acronyms for "Tubo de Calor", in Portu-guese), to be probably flown on ITASAT University satellite is proposed. The experiment consists of an axially-grooved aluminum acetone-charged heat pipe positioned at the center of a spin-stabilized satellite along its spin axis. Two L-shaped saddles provide thermal cou-pling with the top and bottom satellite panels; the temperature difference between these two panels yields necessary driving gradient temperature for the HP operating. Special metallic plates at the HP interfaces (doublers) provide the HP input-output heat rates. High precision thermistors installed along the HP length allow the detection of any Non-Condensable Gases (NCG) blockage expansion. A developed SINDA/FLUINT Thermal Desktop® TUCA ther-mal model is used to predict the HP behavior under flight conditions and for elaboration of thermal vacuum tests specification.

ResumoThis work purpose is to present a specific stage of development of HP (Heat Pipe) for space applications. The heat pipes are devices designed to transport or distribute heat very efficiently without generating significant temperature gradients. The HPs are widely used in satellites for thermal stabilization of structural panels and homogenization temperature in areas of higher heat dissipation due to the operation of electronics equipments. An important aspect to operation HPs is compatibility of the working fluid and the material used in the tube. Even when fluid is considered compatible very slow chemical reactions between the tube material and the fluid itself or impurities or usual rests may generate a small amount of non-condensable gas (NCG), which accumulates in the vapor channel and blocks part of the tube length affecting operating characteristics of the tube. The required qualification test is the Life Test (LT), which is usually conducted during at least two years in thermosyphon manufactured from the same material that the HPs and charged with the same working fluid In the proposed comparative LT the purpose was to evaluate if the internal anodizing contributes to improving the compatibility between the fluid and the material of the tube. Anodizing is an electrochemical process which consists in producing an oxide layer on the aluminium surface this layer of aluminum oxide (alumina) with hexagonal structure is compressed during sealing which is the last stage of the anodizing process. The sealing hydrates alumina pores, hampering the entrance of aggressive agent structure, making the tube more resistant to undesirable chemical reactions. In Life Test stands with 6 one-meter-long thermosyphon from Aluminum 6063, three of which are non- anodized and three - anodized. The thermosyphons were fixed in a vertical position, with the evaporator down (so-named reflux HP mode). The assembly was subjected to heating up to 100W with a maximum temperature of 80 °C using natural convection to cooling the condensation zone. The LT was run for 6 months and Temperature profile along each tube was measured and recorded in data acquisition system. Based on these preliminary results it was possible to determine the effect of non-condensable gases (NCG) by changing the temperature profile over last 4 months of operation. The experimental results are then used in a mathematical model that will be able to predict the location of the barrier and lencth of NCG in the HP. The conclusions about the reasons for generation of NCG in the devices were derived and analyzed.

ResumoOs parafusos são amplamente utilizados em ortopedia para a fixação de placas e barras na reconstrução de ossos fraturados e deformidades. Estes parafusos possuem um projeto controlado por meio de normas especialmente desenvolvidas para aplicações ortopédicas. Este trabalho apresenta uma correlação entre o torque de ruptura e o de escoamento para parafusos ortopédicos e também uma correlação entre a tensão e o torque de escoamento para a matéria prima e um produto, respectivamente. Obteve-se para parafusos construídos em liga de titânio TAV uma relação de cerca de 70% entre o torque de escoamento e o de ruptura. Neste caso, foi possível também obter-se uma relação entre a tensão de escoamento e o torque de escoamento, de forma a predizer o torque de ruptura final do produto a partir de uma propriedade da matéria prima. ABSTRACT: The screws were largely used in the orthopedic area to fixation of plates and bars in reconstruction of bone fractures and deformities. These screws have a design controlled by standards specifically written for orthopedic applications. This work presents a correlation between the rupture and yield torques for screws products and also a correlation between yield strength and torque for the raw material and screw product, respectively. We have found for screws constructed in titanium alloy TAV a correlation of 70% from yield torque to rupture torque. In this case, it is also possible to get a correlation between yield strength and yield torque in order to predict the rupture torque for a final screw from a raw material property.

ResumoMedical device manufacturers are supposed to establish and maintain procedures to control the design of the devices in order to ensure that specific requirements are met. The essential aspects and the regulatory requirements, such as safety, performance, and biocompatibility of a product are established during the design and development phases. Inadequate design can be a major cause of failure of medical devices. Despite a large number of reports on medical device failures, there are no authoritative guidelines for the management of orthopedic fracture fixation. A lack of consensus exists among orthopedic trauma surgeons and manufacturers in the management of these fractures. The design must ensure that devices conform to user needs and intended uses and include testing of production units under actual or simulated conditions of use. For the development of any medical device, the manufacturer needs information about the level of physiological loading. In the case of orthopedic fracture fixation, the values of loading fracture fixation devices not clearly defined in the literature and technical standards. The purpose of this paper is to provide the necessary data of physiological bone loading in the human head (mandible, maxilla, teeth, skull and middle third of the face) for the development of products used in fracture fixation.

ResumoThis paper presents an alternative approach for improving the stationary fine self-alignment of strapdown inertial navigation systems (SINS). This approach is based on an expansion on the measurement vector of the linearised augmented state Kalman filter, which allows us to estimate the observable uncompensated inertial sensor biases more quickly and more accurately, contributing, thus, to increase the system performance during the navigation stage. RESUMO: Neste trabalho é apresentada uma abordagem alternativa para o auto-alinhamento fino estacionário de sistemas de navegação inercial solidários. Tal abordagem baseia-se em uma expansão do vetor de medições do Filtro de Kalman linearizado usualmente utilizado no problema do auto-alinhamento fino, o qual permite que os bias observáveis não-compensados dos sensores inerciais sejam estimados com maior precisão e rapidez, melhorando assim o desempenho global do sistema durante a fase de navegação.

ResumoGravitational waves are perturbations in the space-time that propagate at the speed of light. The study of such phenomenon is interesting because many cosmological processes and astrophysical objects, such as binary systems, are potential sources of gravitational radiation and can have their emissions detected in the near future by the next generation of interferometric detectors. Concerning the astrophysical objects, an interesting case is when there are several sources emitting in such a way that there is a superposition of signals, resulting in a smooth spectrum which spans a wide range of frequencies, the so-called stochastic background. In this paper, we are concerned with the stochastic backgrounds generated by compact binaries (i.e., binary systems formed by neutron stars and black holes) in the coalescing phase. In particular, we obtain such backgrounds by employing a new method developed in our previous studies.

ResumoThis paper aims to present the Comprehensiveness Balance for Efficiency (CBfE) method for Platform-Based Satellite Family. The lack of a penalty measurement to assess the performance loss of using a platform could reduce significantly the family performance. The method, taking into account the comprehensiveness of space missions and the platform characteristics defined at the conception phase, assesses the platform inefficiency, in terms of the additional mass required by the platform equipment to cope with the worst environment factors. The method covers the aerodynamic drag and torque, the Earths magnetic field, the eclipse and Sun energy absorption, the cumulated radiation dose absorbed by the electronic components and the effect on the structure to be prepared for several launchers. Based on this assessment and on an interactive process, the platform designer tunes the comprehensiveness with the suitable level of efficiency. A real case, the Brazilian MultiMission Platform project (PMM), is presented as an example of application. The method covers an existing gap on the platform development process for space applications.
