ResumoA problem that is frequently arising in the spectral mixture analysis is how to correctly identify the endmembers present in the scene. In the analysis of image data covering natural scenes, vegetation, bare soil, and shade/water are commonly assumed as endmembers, but other endmembers may also be present. This paper investigates an approach based on the analysis of residuals produced by the linear spectral mixing model for identifying potential missing endmembers. The basic proposition consists in assuming that larger residuals are caused by missing endmembers. The image is segmented in terms of the residuals, and the KolmogorovSmirnov test is applied to group segments that show similar residuals and are thus likely to include the same missing endmember. An approach to estimate the spectral response of the missing endmembers is also investigated. The proposed methodology is tested by using Thematic Mapper Landsat and Coupled Charge Device ChinaBrazil Earth Resources Satellite image data. In addition to vegetation, bare soil, and shade/water, two additional endmembers were included as missing endmembers (clouds and water bodies with a large load of suspended sediments). The tests have shown that the proposed methodology is capable of detecting image regions that include missing endmembers and of correctly estimating the corresponding spectral responses.

ResumoSimuladores operacionais de satélites são utilizados, entre outros fins, para o treinamento de operadores e para a validação de sistemas de solo. Neste trabalho, é proposto o uso de algoritmos evolutivos para tais simuladores. Eles seriam capazes de adequar, de forma autônoma, seus modelos comportamentais às diversas fases e etapas de funcionamento dos satélites que simulam, ao longo de suas vidas úteis e após suas extensões, refletindo os estados de funcionamento não previstos em seus documentos de especificações.

ResumoEste trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver um simulador em tempo real para o comportamento térmico de um satélite, utilizando Redes Neurais Artificiais. Os resultados obtidos até o momento demonstram a capacidade das Redes Neurais, não só de reproduzir resultados conhecidos, como também de generalizar para situações não fornecidas no treinamento.

ResumoO processo de simulação possibilita ao usuário a realização de estudos a respeito do sistema modelado, e também, a exploração de situações pouco conhecidas, com a finalidade de adquirir embasamento teórico e preparação. Assim, este trabalho propõe uma interface entre um simulador de satélites e um sistema real em teste, utilizando simulação com hardware na malha, para verificar a viabilidade desta aplicação.

ResumoIn this work, we examine the atmospheric and ionospheric responses to the January 2013 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event. To examine the atmospheric and ionospheric behavior during this event, three main parameters are used (1) Total Electron Content (TEC) collected from the International Global Positioning System and from the Brazilian Network of Continuous Monitoring stations, (2) daytime E × B vertical drift derived from the magnetometers located at the equatorial station Alta Floresta (9.9°S, 55.9°W, dip latitude 1.96°) and an off-equatorial station Cuiaba (15.3°S, 56.0°W, dip latitude 7.10°), both in the Brazilian sector, (3) the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) meridional and zonal wind components measured by the Meteor Radar located at the southern midlatitude Santa Maria (29.4°S, 53.3°W, dip latitude 17.8°). We identify the anomalous variation in E × B drift based on later local-time migration of peak value with SSW days. A novel feature of the present study is the identification of the similar migration pattern in the TEC anomaly, in spite that the simultaneous solar flux increases during the SSW event. Other novel features are the amplification of the 1316 day period in the TEC anomaly during the SSW days and simultaneous amplification of this period in the meridional and zonal wind components in the MLT region, as far as 30°S. These aspects reveal the presence of coupled atmosphere-ionosphere dynamics during the SSW event and the amplification of the lunar and/or solar tidal component, a characteristic which is recently reported from the electrojet current measurements.

ResumoDoped diamond films on titanium substrate were systematically studied by controlling their sp2/sp3 hybridization as well as their boron doping levels. Samples were grown by hot filament chemical vapor deposition technique at CH4 additions of 1, 2, 6 and 10 sccmdiluted in H2 for a total flowrate of 200 sccm. For each CH4 concentration four doping levelswere studied. The boron sourcewas obtained froma constant flowof 40 sccmfor an additional H2 line passing through a bubbler containing the B2O3 dissolved in methanol with B/C ratios of 2000, 7000, 15,000, and 30,000 B/C ppm. Scanning electron microscopy images depicted well faceted films without cracks or delaminations. The sp2/sp3 ratio as purity index (PI) and the growth tendency index (GTI), associated to the TiC formation, were evaluated by Raman and X-ray spectra, respectively. GTI index was used in this work to analyze the competition between the diamond growth and TiC formation. It is also possible to associate the GTI index in terms of C/H ratio, sincewhen this ratio is increased, the GTI index also increased. A constant GTI increase was observed as a function of CH4 addition for the whole range of the boron doping studied. For PI, an optimized value was observed at 6 sccm of CH4 for the doping levels higher than 2000 ppm of B/C ratio.

ResumoThe Wetlands of the Bolivian lowlands, in the southwestern portion of the Amazon Basin, are of great importance for hydrological and biogeochemical cycles for the whole basin: The proximity and influence of the Andes mountain range determines a high spatial and temporal variability of floods; the great proportion of herbaceous floodplains, the highest among the Amazon, defines a wide floodable area that retains different types of water an sediments from upstream. In addition, these extensive wetlands may play a role in climate regulation since they are relevant to energy fluxes and carbon cycle. Environmental change, mainly land use change, infrastructure projects and climate change-variability, are threatening the complex hydrological cycle in this area, where periodic flooding is crucial for human populations and ecosystems. Extreme climatic events have derived in great economic impacts while further damages in ecosystems and local populations are still undetermined. There is a lack of knowledge about wetlands and their functions. This, together with the disparity between perception and scientific evidence of environmental change impacts, are leading to null or inadequate responses. Thus, there is a growing demand to understand the functioning and dynamics of these wetlands. In this study, we integrate remote sensing with hydrologic modeling to represent flood processes in the Mamore and Itenez-Guapore basins. This approach make possible to study interactions between wetlands and the hydrometeorological regime of the watershed in an integral way and to provide elements for inferring the impacts of environmental change. This research contemplates different phases: flood mapping using remote sensing techniques, with passive and active systems (MODIS and ALOS-PALSAR), that will assist the parameterization of numerical routines for floodplains simulation in a hydrological model (MHD-INPE model); the simulation and analysis of the model outputs in terms of hydrometeorological processes and its influences on flood dynamics. This study will provide relevant information to ongoing scientific initiatives that seek to understand the landscape fragmentation processes during the Holocene and to delineate water resources management strategies in the Bolivian Lowlands.

Resumohe extensive search for deviations from Gaussianity in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) data is very important due to the information about the very early moments of the universe encoded there. Recent analyses from Planck CMB data do not exclude the presence of non-Gaussianity of small amplitude, although they are consistent with the Gaussian hypothesis. The use of different techniques is essential to provide information about types and amplitudes of non-Gaussianities in the CMB data. In particular, we find interesting to construct an estimator based upon the combination of two powerful statistical tools that appears to be sensitive enough to detect tiny deviations from Gaussianity in CMB maps. This estimator combines the Minkowski functionals with a Neural Network, maximizing a tool widely used to study non-Gaussian signals with a reinforcement of another tool designed to identify patterns in a data set. We test our estimator by analyzing simulated CMB maps contaminated with different amounts of local primordial non-Gaussianity quantified by the dimensionless parameter f NL. We apply it to these sets of CMB maps and find < 98% of chance of positive detection, even for small intensity local non-Gaussianity like f NL = 38±18, the current limit from Planck data for large angular scales. Additionally, we test the suitability to distinguish between primary and secondary non-Gaussianities: first we train the Neural Network with two sets, one of nearly Gaussian CMB maps (|f NL| 10) but contaminated with realistic inhomogeneous Planck noise (i.e., secondary non-Gaussianity) and the other of non-Gaussian CMB maps, that is, maps endowed with weak primordial non-Gaussianity (28 f NL 48); after that we test an ensemble composed of CMB maps either with one of these non-Gaussian contaminations, and find out that our method successfully classifies < 95% of the tested maps as being CMB maps containing primordial or secondary non-Gaussianity. Furthermore, we analyze the foreground-cleaned Planck maps obtaining constraints for non-Gaussianity at large-angles that are in good agreement with recent constraints. Finally, we also test the robustness of our estimator including cut-sky masks and realistic noise maps measured by Planck, obtaining successful results as well.
