ResumoThe temperature dependence of the A1 (TO) broad phonon linewidth is discussed. It is shown that it can adequately be accounted for by assuming a simple model where the Ti ions are sitting off the center of the unit cell and tunneling through a double well in the direction of the ferroelectric axis.

ResumoA model is developed which assumes the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of BaTiO3, along the ferroelectric axis in the tetragonal phase to be essentially determined by a relaxation mechanism involving dipole reorientation controled by tunneling across a double well potential barrier. Model parameters are determined from fits to existing data and it is shown that the fitted curves adjust well to the data within experimental error. The results support the hypothesis that the ferro-to-paraelectric transition in BaTiO3 is not governed by phonon assisted processes but must be ascribed to an intrinsic type of disorder

ResumoIron carbonyl sorption in PTFE, followed by in situ oxidation, gives the composite material, iron oxide-PTFE. Oxide particle size determination was performed by electron microscopy. The particles were found to be nearly spherical and very small, having diameters in the 30-40 a range overage. Optical absorption spectra were obtained by photoacoustic spectroscopy, and their intensities show a complex dependence on iron oxide concentration in the samples.

ResumoA novel method for the preparation of ultrafine Fe203 particles in a polymeric (PTFE) matrix is described. Mossbauer spectra allow the particles to be identified as a-Fe2O3 showing superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. Electron paramagnetic resonance is investigated between liquid nitrogen and room temperatures. The resonance linewidth is found to be independent of temperature, and approximately inversely proportional to the particles volume (as determined by electron microscopy).

ResumoDepth profiles of ferromagnetic layered samples were studied with photoacoustically detected ferromagnetic resonance. Results obtained from recorder tapes and from a prepared nickel-iron sandwich are reported. Two different procedures based on frequency and phase resolved measurements were used to deconvolute the layered structure of the ferromagnetic samples. The depth resolution which is a function of the thermal diffusivity of the material and of the modulation frequency was as low as lum in the case of the ferromagnetic tapes.

ResumoA recent article proposed a photoacoustic method for determining the thermal diffusivity of optically transparent solids, and gave experimental confirmation. However, the theoretical basis for the method was partially in error, was unnecessarily limited to a one- dimensional treatment of heat flow, and failed to incorporate the effect of finite beam size. As the method does appear to have the advantage of simplicity of experimental arrangement, a proper theoretical discussion is warranted.

ResumoThe possibility of using the phase shift of the photoacoustic signal of different constituents as an alternative tool for depth profile analysis of layered samples is discussed. The method proposed is experimentally demonstrated by measuring the phase variations of the photoacoustic-detected magnetic resonance of a sample consisting of a computer tape bonded to an aluminium foil. The experimental data are found to be in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions based upon the simple one-dimensional thermal piston model.

ResumoThe photoacoustic thermal characterization of some quartz and glass sample is discussed. The physical quantity used as a thermal monitoring parameter is the thermal diffusivity, which is measured using the photoacoustic phase data. At low modulation frequencies the thermal diffusivity is obtained from the phase lag between the front and rear illumination. At high modulation frequencies the thermal diffusivity is obtained from the frequency dependence of the front phase illumination data.

ResumoThe photoacoustic measurement of polymer foils, typically 170–200 µm thick, is discussed. It is shown that the measurement based upon the phase lag between the front and rear illuminations is applicable only in a limited range of frequencies from 6 to 12 Hz. The dominant mechanism responsible for the photoacoustic signal, in almost the entire frequency range 10–100 Hz, is proven to be the thermoelastic bending of the foil samples. The thermal diffusivity is then obtained from the frequency dependence of the front-phase illumination data.

For large samples with very small internal resistances (~0.1 ), the additional contribution of the current iss ipation near short-circuit conditions yielded results similar to those obtained with photothermal radiometry or the pyroelectric detection. For small samples, the results for the conversion efficiency, both at low and high modulation frequencies, are similar to ones obtained from the conventional electrical measurements.

ResumoA discussion on the use of the phase shifts of the photoacoustic signal of different constituents of a composite sample for resolving their individual spectra is presented. It is experimentally shown that as long as we are interested in a qualitative analysis the method is simple and fast. For a quantitative analysis in which the nonradiative relaxation time and the characteristic diffusion time within the optical-absorption depth are sought, the method presents some limitations. This is demonstrated using MnO2- and CoO-doped soda-lime–silica glass samples.

ResumoIn the last 10 years we have witnessed the rapid development of photoacoustic and related photothermal techniques for nondestructive materials inspection in several areas of research. For a comprehensive review of photothermal wave phenomena and their applications, we refer to the books by Rosenewaig and Mandelis and to some of the many review articles published on the subject. The photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy looks directly at the heat generated in a sample, owing to the nonradiative deexcitation processes following the absorption of modulated light. In a conventional PA experimental arrangement a sample is enclosed in an air-tight cell and exposed to a chopped light beam. As a result of the periodic heating of the sample, owing to the light-into-heat conversion, the pressure in the chamber oscillates at the chopping frequency and can be detected by a sensitive microphone coupled to the cell. The resulting PA signal depends not only on the amount of -heat generated in the sample, i.e., on the optical absorption coefficient for the incident radiation as well as the light-into-heat conversion efficiency, but also on how this heat diffuses through the sample. The dependence upon these factors is the main reason underlying the versatility of the PA technique. Since the PA signal depends on the absorption coefficient of the incident radiation, spectroscopic studies can be performed, whereas the fact that the signal is also proportional to the light-into-heat conversion efficiency means that it is complementary to other photoinduced energy conversion processes and can, therefore, be used to study nonthermal deexcitation processes. Finally, the fact that the PA signal depends on how the heat diffuses through the sample allows us to perform not only thermal characterization of the sample (i.e., measurement of its theremal properties) but also to conduct thermal imaging. This last point comes from the fact that the thermal wave generated by the absorption of the incident light pulse may be reflected and scattered as it encounters cracks, defects, and so on, thereby affecting the detected signal.

This amorphous-crystalline solid transformation is monitored by electron-spin resonance and photoacoustic spectroscopies. No significant changes were detected for samples heated below 190 °C. Above this temperature both techniques presented results following a definite pattern, namely, the enhancement of ion mobility leading to particle growth and crystallization for a temperature up to 240 °C and the onset of magnetic ordering of magnetite near this temperature.

The changes in the photoacoustically measured physical properties, such as nonradiative relaxation time and thermal diffusivity, are present as a function of the doping time. The results show strong evidence that an order-disorder transition is taking place as a function of the doping time. The suggested order-disorder transition is also evident in the dielectric constant measurements of the doped films.

ResumoThe influence of poling fields on the electrical and thermal properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) pyroelectric detectors is discussed. It is shown that both the dielectric constant and the thermal diffusivity exhibit a monotonically increasing behavior with the poling field. The detectors were fabricated by solution casting of the PVDF films followed by thermal poling. It is concluded that the predominant crystal phase present in our films is the y-form. Except for the dielectric breakdown field, all the electrical and thermal properties of these films were found to be in good agreement with the commercially available ones. The thermal diffusivity was measured using the so-called open photoacoustic cell method.

ResumoUsing two different photoacoustic techniques for a two-layer system of variable thickness, we show that the thermal diffusivity and the thermal conductivity are completely determined, based upon the effective-sample model widely used in heat-transfer problems. A procedure to establish a standard photothermal technique for measuring both the thermal diffusivity and the thermal conductivity is also discussed.

ResumoThe possibility of using a minimal-volume photoacoustic cell to perform spectroscopy of samples is discussed. It is shown that this alternative signal-to-noise-enhanced photoacoustic configuration allows one to obtain both absorption and transmission spectra with minimal experimental arrangement and cell machining requirements. The theoretical model is presented, the use of which is exemplified by a complete optical and thermal characterization of leaves.

ResumoPhotosynthetic efficiency is considered one of the traits potentially suitable to differentiate hybrids from their inbred lines. Previous evaluations concerning photosynthetic efficiencies of maize (Zea mays L.) plants in the field have shown inconsistent and contradictory data. In this work, we attempted to study photosynthetic O2 evolution through photo-acoustic spectroscopy in intact undetached leaves of dark-adapted seedlings of inbreds and their hybrids. The results indicate that photosynthetic efficiencies of inbreds and hybrids can be differentiated by photoacoustic measurements of oxygen evolution, providing a parameter that might prove useful in evaluating plant genotypes.

ResumoThe general utility of the photoacoustic effect is demonstrated by examining in vivo and in situ, for the first time, the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal infection on the photosynthetic activity of intact maize leaves. Experiments correlating the photosynthetic O2 evolution, after a dark induction period, through the photoacoustic effect in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal maize plants with their field performance show very consistent data. The influence of the arbuscular mycorrhizal infection on the photosynthetic efficiency is discussed. This methodology opens the possibility for early evaluation of the effect of fungi symbiotic adaptation with maize plants. For the arbuscular mycorrhizal-maize plant system, photoacoustics represents an extremely helpful technique for discarding low performance materials.

ResumoBasic data on thermal, dielectric, and infrared spectra properties of cooked tortillas were investigated with the aim of understanding the role of lime, Ca(OH)(2), that is incorporated during the alkaline cooking process. The data are further supplemented by X-ray diffraction and texture measurements. The changes in the thermal diffusivities, as measured by the photoacoustic technique, as well as changes in texture, X-ray patterns, dielectric, and infrared spectra properties are presented as a function of the lime concentration. The results show strong evidence that there is a marked concentration of lime at approximate to 0.2% above and below where there are different behavior patterns of the measured properties of tortilla. In particular, the results of the study of dielectric constants and thermal diffusivity provide strong evidence for an enhancement of the starch crosslinking taking place at a lime content of approximate to 0.2%.

ResumoThe use of the photoacoustic technique to monitor the thermal properties of materials that can be obtained only as parts of multicomponent samples is illustrated by performing the thermal characterization of two porous materials: porous silicon obtained from n-type crystalline silicon through the spark process and that obtained through the electrochemical etching method. This nonseparative, and hence nondestructive, approach makes use of an effective thermal diffusivity treatment based on the analogy between thermal and electrical resistances, in combination with simplified compositional models for the corresponding multicomponent systems. The thermal parameters obtained are in agreement with existent studies concerning the composition of these materials. This approach offers the possibility of performing the thermal characterization of other porous semiconductors and analogous materials.

ResumoThe photoacoustic detection of water vapour permeability in solids is discussed. We propose a new experimental configuration in which the photoacoustic heat source is located at the cell’s optical entrance window, rather than at the sample–transducer gas interface. It is claimed that only the sample permeability property is experimentally accessed in the new configuration. The experimental arrangement is tested by measuring the water vapour permeability of a ZrO2–TiO2 ceramic sample. In these measurements we were able to detect changes in the air molar concentration of water as small as 1.1%, with a resolution better than 0.5%, corresponding to the lowest relative humidity used in our measurements.

ResumoIn the semiarid highlands of central Mexico the mesquite tree (Prosopis laevigata) is often removed for agricultural and forestry purposes. Clearing of land for agricultural purposes has a significant impact on soil processes and nutrient dynamics and, ultimately, on crop production. We have studied the effect of the mesquite tree on soil respiration, amounts of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, and soil characteristics. Soil was sampled from three distinct locations: under the canopy of the mesquite tree, in the area surrounding the mesquite tree but not covered by its canopy, and in adjacent cultivated land. It was found that the mesquite tree plays an important role in nutrient cycling in arid and semiarid regions. Soil microorganisms and nutrients (N, P, and Fe) were more abundant under the canopy of the mesquite tree than in the surrounding area and in the adjacent arable soil.

ResumoIn this paper we discuss the use of an alternative photothermal technique for measurements of thermal properties of liquids. The proposed technique is based upon the concept of thermal wave interferometry. The liquid sample is confined between two thin pyroelectric detectors. One of these detectors acts as a modulated absorber of light while the other is used for sensing the temperature fluctuations transmitted through the liquid layer. The good agreement between the values of the thermal properties we got with the present technique and those reported in the literature demonstrates the capability of the technique for full characterization of the thermal properties of liquids.

ResumoA gas sensing device based on a thermal wave resonator cavity is outlined. It is experimentally tested by monitoring the presence of several hydrocarbon vapors in air via the measurement of the thermal diffusivity. It is also shown that its time-dependent response may be used to follow the vapor diffusion. It is shown that its characteristic response time is linearly correlated to the thermal diffusivity value of the mixture. The steps toward the development of a practical sensing device are further discussed.

TítuloThermal diffusivity as an automotive fuel characterization parameter: correlation with motor octane number

ResumoThe standard method for evaluating the quality of automotive fuels is based on the determination of its motor octane number (MON) using the ASTM motor testing. The resulting figures of merit of this standard testing are known to be strongly linearly correlated to the fuels' vapor thermodynamic properties such as, for instance, their vapor pressure. In this paper we explore this strong correlation between the MON parameter and the fuels' vapor thermal properties to seek the development of an alternative low-cost method. The proposed method is based upon the photothermal measurement of the thermal diffusivity of the fuels' vapor in a closed air cell. It is found that the thermal diffusivity is well correlated with the corresponding MON values of the fuels investigated. The eventual improvements of the proposed method aimed at gaining accuracy and developing a portable device for field applications are also discussed.

ResumoA method suitable for the thermal characterization of gases is described. It is based on thermal wave interference (TWI) in a cavity. A TWI device was constructed and the thermal diffusivity of different binary gas mixtures as a function of their relative concentration was measured. From these values, using a logarithm mixing model for the thermal conductivity of a two-phase gas system, the thermal properties of the corresponding pure gases were calculated. The data obtained for several test gases show good agreement with values reported in the literature.

ResumoIn this paper we discuss the use of an alternative photothermal technique for measurements of thermal properties of liquid mixtures. The proposed technique is based upon the concept of a thermal wave interferometer. The liquid sample is confined between two thin pyroelectric detectors. One of these detectors acts as a modulated light absorber while the other is used for sensing the temperature fluctuations transmitted through the liquid layer. It is demonstrated that the proposed experimental configuration allows us to fully characterize the thermal properties of the constituent liquids.

ResumoA gas analyzer device based on thermal wave interference in a cavity is presented. The thermal diffusivity of CO2:air mixtures as a function of the relative concentration is measured. It is demonstrated that different concentrations of CO2 in air can be detected with accuracy using the described experimental device. The results presented here open the possibility to perform routine measurements of thermal diffusivity of binary gas mixtures and using this parameter to monitor the relative gas concentration.

ResumoA discussion on the use of thermal wave interference (TWI) for the monitoring of the transients of hydrocarbon in air is presented. The thermal wave signal was modeled using the logarithm-mixing model for the thermal diffusivity of a two-phase gas system in which the hydrocarbon vapor concentration in the air-filled TWI cell is a varying function of time. The time varying hydrocarbon vapor concentration was described assuming the simple Fick's model for mass diffusion of the hydrocarbon vapor in the stagnant air column of the TWI cell. The transient TWI signal amplitude data fitting yielded two parameters, namely, the saturation concentration and the characteristic diffusion time. From the corresponding values of the diffusion time the hydrocarbon mass diffusivities were straightforwardly obtained. The obtained values for the hydrocarbon mass diffusivities were found to be in good agreement with the ones reported in the literature.

ResumoThe thermal wave interference technique (TWI) has been explored in recent years for the investigation of the thermal and transport properties of gases and liquids. In this article we address ourselves to the quantitative understanding of the transient thermal wave interference signal of air:hydrocarbon vapor mixtures. This is the situation one faces when placing a given portion of liquid hydrocarbon inside an initially air-filled thermal wave interference. What is observed in this case is the thermal wave interference signal decay as a function of the time as a result of the change of the gas thermal diffusivity with time due to the increase of the hydrocarbon vapor concentration in air. In this article we show that value of the thermal diffusivity of the saturated mixture is readily obtained from the saturation value of the normalized signal amplitude, without the need of performing the conventional L scan.

ResumoIn this paper, we describe a new, simple, and fast photothermal method for detecting the presence of adulterants in commercial gasolines. The method consists essentially of measuring the time evolution of the gasoline vapor in an originarily air-filled closed cell using a pyroelectric sensor. The transient photothermal signal amplitude data fitting yields two parameters, namely, a saturation signal amplitude and the characteristic time for approaching saturation. From the values, two figures of merit are defined. The method was tested with a universe of 210 commercial samples collected in different gas stations. It is shown that the proposed method has an uncertainty of 5.7%. This good accuracy, together with its simplicity and fast response, may render it useful for developing a portable device for fast checking in field analysis.
