AbstractThe objective of this work is to describe the development of a fluxgate magnetometer for measuring geomagnetic field variations. The study of Earths magnetic field has a great importance in the field of space research. This kind of sensor is based on the principle of varying permeability under an excitation signal. The fluxgate sensor is composed of two coils wound on the ring core, one coil for excitation and the second coil a sensor coil for the detection of signal proportional to the ambient geomagnetic field. Each sensor has a toroidal core with high permeability and orthogonal to each other, forming a coordinate axis that is aligned with the H, D and Z components of geomagnetic field. This toroidal core is exposed of in a excitation field Ho generated by a coil around the ring, that make to change the material magnetic flux according the BxHo hysteresis curve. When the magnetic flux is ranged in saturation point, the core permeability vanishes. When the core is not saturated, the external magnetic field, which one want to measure, is concentrated in a toroidal core due your high permeability. After receiving the excitation field, the magnetic flux in the core changes due the saturation and consequent decrease of external permeability. This magnetic flux variation is detected by a secondary coil wound over the ring core. The detected second harmonic of the excitation signal is proportional to the external field that is to be measured. Thus we can implement a circuit that excites the core and provides the second harmonic signal proportional to the ambient geomagnetic.
