AbstractThis study examines some models which analyze differences in earnings, and provides empirical evidence that shows strenght and limitations of the human capital theory. After presenting the human capital approach, an empirical model is formulated. This model is used to explain earning differentials without the neoclassical assumptions. The model is a result of the criticism of human capital theory, and the explanatory variables in the model reflect characteristics which individuals, in most cases, cannot alter. In both models, data consist of about 67000 observations of the National Household Sampling (PNAD) collected by FIBGE (Brazilian Federal Statistical Agency). Even though the level of schooling is highly correlated with earnings of individuals; this fact by itself is not sufficient for accepting the human capital theory. Evidences presented suggest that the importance which is often given to formal education within the human capital theory is overestimated.
