Abstract | Introduction Product development process (PDP) has been recognized as a source of competitive profits and nowadays has received special attention from companies. Through PDP systematization companies can reduce their costs and development time and increase their product quality. Recent literature suggests that to get an effective systematization it is necessary to analyze and improve this business process. Then PDP models describing phases, best practices and methods for product development had been a common place in the research agenda, such as: Pugh(1991); Wheelwright & Clark(1992); Cooper(1993); Ulrich & Eppinger(1995); Ullman(1997); Baxter(1998). Nevertheless, minor effort had been devoted to the problem of how to put this business process models in practice. How to proceed the product development process improvement and the impact in the performance are aspects that should not be explored sufficiently. Objectives This article describes the case of product development systematization in a specific automotive enterprise. During the case research it was collected recent data of company performance and history information regarding changes on its PDP model and practices. Through a holistic case study, as defined by Yin (1994), this research into the company allowed us to identify actions, best and bad practices and to analyze the impact on performance in order to identify aspects to be studied at theory. Method To analyze the PDP systematization and performance it was selected six concluded product development projects which were developed on two different periods of time: before and after a set of PDP systematization actions. The results of those two project groups were compared through some key performance indicators defined previously. Results The paper presents a discussion regarding results obtained by that company with the PDP systematization. It was possible to understand how those activities had positively intervened on projects results and which benefits they brought to the company. The paper discuss too the gap between the activities implemented and the PDP models related in the bibliographical review. |
