ResumoThis presentation summarizes some of the recent results obtained by the group involved in Electrodynamical Phenomena Modelling at INPE, using wavelet singularities detection to analyze geomagnetic data. The main objectives focused by the group are: a) to characterize different processes that occur in the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling during intense magnetic storms using wavelet technique. b) to propose an alternative way to identify geomagnetic storms using isolated magnetograms instead of the pre-processed Dst index. c) to chracterize magnetic storms taking into account the amount of energy transferred as transients (singularities), during the main phase of the storm. d) to infer some properties of the magnetospheric dynamics involved in the energy transfer from higher to lower latitudes. As a common methodology, the wavelet transform has been used to treat non-stationary signals to obtain information on the frequency or scale variations of those time series and to detect its structures localization in time and/or in space. A hard thresholding process has been applied to the wavelet coefficients for the first three decomposition levels dj (j=1,2,3) to identify the shock-like transient phenomena that appear in the main phase of the magnetic storms. In order to propose an alternative way to identify geomagnetic storms using isolated magnetograms instead of the processed Dst index, 53 moderate, intense and super-intense magnetic storms that occurred from January 1997 to December 2004 were used to characterize the storm, taking into account the amountof energy transferred as transients, during the main phase of the storm. Based on the wavelet signatures obtained for each event, the number and amplitude of the wavelet coefficients were used to infer some common properties of the storm magnitudes. Magnetic signals recorded at six magnetic stations aligned, as much as possible, along a magnetic longitude (~210o): KAK, GUA, TIK CNB, KDU and DRV, have been analyzed for three intense magnetic storms, to infer some properties of the magnetospheric dynamics involved in the energy transfer from higher to lower latitudes. The time delay observed in the wavelet signatures of higher latitude stations in relation to the lower ones can give precious information on the main processes responsible for the energy transfer from auroral to equatorial latitudes. Because of its peculiarities, the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA), magnetograms recorded at the Brazilian stations Vassouras-VAS (22.40°S; 46.35°W) and São Martinho da Serra-SMS (29.44°S; 53.82° W), which are under the influence of the SAMA, were analyzed for the magnetically disturbed period 5-26 August, 2003. The characteristics of the magnetic signatures obtained in the SAMA were compared to those measured at Kakioka-KAK (Japan) where the total strength of the Earth´s magnetic field is quite different from the SAMA. Using ionospheric data from cosmic noise absorption measured in the SAMA, interplanetary medium parameters (Bz and protonsfluxes at different energy ranges) and the SYM index, we have examined how the effetcs of solar energetic particles can affect the space and time configuration of the ring current, during the geomagnetically disturbed period 25 August September 2, 1998. The time delays and periodicities of the data heve been discussed in terms of the amplitude and number of coefficients of the wavelet signatures. An attempt is made to interpret the likely processes that can be responsible for the variations measured in the ring current and the role of the energetic particles fluences in the in ionizing the lower ionosphere, mostly in the SAMA.
