| Resumo | The impact of air quality in the state of Mato Grosso on children under five years of age in the June to November periods of 2008 and 2009 was investigated. Information on the concentration of particulate material with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers (MP2.5), derived from the numerical model Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CATTBRAMS), meteorological conditions (precipitation, relative humidity, temperature and wind speed and direction) and asthma occurrence were employed in order to analyze the relationship between the variables and the abovementioned illness. The years 2008 and 2009 were marked by the events of La Niña and El Niño, respectively. These phenomena have an impact on rainfall patterns, due to changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, and consequently the number of fire spots, which in turn impact the atmospheric particulate matter concentration. The results showed that asthma did not have a direct relationship with MP2.5. Thus, we suggest an investigation with another type of illness that is more sensitive to MP2.5, or the use of a more sophisticated methodology to better represent a possible relationship between them, such as multivariate statistics. In this study, only a qualitative analysis was conducted. |
