| Resumo | Este trabalho descreve uma das mais severas devastações ambientais de que se tem notícia neste século, numa região do Brasil que normalmente não faz parte dos locais de grandes queimadas. O que ocorreu no Estado de Roraima em março de 1998, foi causado em primeiro lugar, pelo grande período de intensa seca na região, resultado de um fenômeno climático que causou perturbações em todo o globo. Em segundo lugar, pela falta de cuidado dos nossos lavradores/fazendeiros que insistiram na prática da queimada tradicional após a derrubada e capina de mata, apesar das proibições, sem perceber o perigo que estavam causando ao meio ambiente, nestas condições climáticas especiais. Um pequeno foco aqui, outro ali, e o que deveria ser uma queimada a mais na época de seca, tornou-se um incêndio de proporções dramáticas. É esta a situação que se descreve neste livro. O trabalho começa com a descrição de como ocorrem as queimadas no Brasil, em geral, e o impacto ao meio ambiente da atmosfera, no Capítulo 1. É importante notar que Roraima não faz parte das regiões do Brasil onde normalmente ocorre o maior número de queimadas, que é a do Brasil Central, região de cerrado, no norte de Mato Grosso, em Rondônia, Goiás, Tocantins, e sul do Pará. 0 incêndio de Roraima foi uma grande surpresa e uma grande exceção. No Capítulo 2 mostra-se como é a região geográfica de Roraima, que singularmente se situa em grande parte no Hemisfério Norte, e o Capítulo 3 descreve a Meteorologia da região, com informações também sobre o fenômeno climático El Ni¤o. 0 Capítulo 4 relata como transcorreu o evento em seu momento mais crítico. Como iniciou e como se desenvolveu no mês de março. Os prejuízos materiais causados pelo incêndio são descritos no Capítulo 5, bem como a avaliação técnica sobre o tamanho da área queimada, e em seguida, no Capítulo 6, fala-se nos heróis e vilões do episódio. Aqueles que trabalharam duro para apagar o incêndio e também aqueles que no desempenho de suas funções talvez não o fizeram tão bem como deveriam. O fim do grande incêndio é narrado no Capítulo 7. 0 fogo é apagado não,, pelos bombeiros, que apesar de terem trabalhado muito bem, foram impotentes diante da dimensão da tragédia, mas pelas chuvas naturais e providenciais que caíram no final de março e início de abril. Summary: This book describes one of the most severe environmental destructions cited in the news in this century, in a region of Brazil which normally is not part of the large seasonal wildfires. What happened in the State of Roraima in March 1998, was caused primarily by the intense dryness of the region, consequence of a climatic phenomenon that caused unwanted perturbations all over the Globe. In addition, farmers and land owners were not careful enough, and insisted in making the traditional burnings after the clearing of forests, in spite of the Federal Government prohibitions, not realizing the danger that was imposed to the environment under the special climatic situation. A small fire here, another one over there, and what should have been just another "small" wildfire during the dry season, became a dramatic nightmare of enormous proportions. It is this situation that is described in this book. The work starts with a description of how most of the wildfires get started in Brazil, in general, and its impact on the environment of the atmosphere, in Chapter 1. It is important to realize that Roraima is located outside of the normal Brazilian biomass burning area, which is the region in the center of the Country, a region of savannas locally called cerrados, including the north of the state of Mato Grosso, Rondonia, Goias, Tocantins and south of Para. The wildfire of Roraima was a big surprise and a great exception. The geographic region of Roraima is described in Chapter 2, calling attention to the fact that it is almost entirely situated in the Northern Hemisphere. Chapter 3 describes the meteorology of the region, including information on the climatic phenomenon El Ni¤o. Chapter 4 describes the evolution of the fire event during its most critical phase. How it started and developed during the month of March. The physical damage caused by the wildfire is described in Chapter 5, as well as the technical assessment of the size of the burnt area, and in Chapter 6 the heroes and villains of the episode are mentioned. The end of the huge fire is described in Chapter 7. The fire is extinguished not by the firemen, who despite their excellent performance were impotent in view of the colossal dimensions of the tragedy, but by the natural rains that started to fall by the end of March and beginning of April. | |||||||||
