             abstract = "The present work has shown an analyse of the urbanization process 
                         of Ribeir{\~a}o Vermelho hydrographic sub-basin in the city of 
                         S{\~a}o Jos{\'e} dos Campos - SP, through the geotechnologies 
                         and the mechanism of planning and management of this process, in 
                         the period between 1962 and 2004. The inquiry procedure consisted 
                         of: 1) to elaborate the digital cartographic base; 2) to interpret 
                         aerial photographs to generate the land use and cover maps; 3) to 
                         carry through the survey of the incident legislation on the study 
                         area, being aimed at to compare the use and occupation of lands 
                         with the urbanization process, in the present period; 4) to 
                         generate the area map framing it to the hydric resources 
                         protection legislation; and 5) to carry through field research to 
                         update the information and to deepen the understanding of the 
                         problems verified in timeframe of the research. The 
                         multi-temporality of this study disclosed how important 
                         geotechnolgies are in the process of understand the production of 
                         the urban space in this case was subjects the diverse endogenous 
                         and exogenous factors, responsible for the alteration of the study 
                         area urbanization initial plans; it also demonstrated to the 
                         non-observance of some aspects of the legislation front to the 
                         using and occupation of its lands. Through this study it was 
                         verified that to reach the ideal of the {"}Sustainable Cities{"} 
                         the urban managers and the society will have to reflect on the 
                         current model changing desire to another one where predominates 
                         the ambient balance and social justice.",
