abstract = "The Andes Cordillera, with its heights that often exceed 4000m,
causes a strong barrier effect to the westerlies. In the some
situations, the subtropical air moving over the mountains, can
descend strongly on the lee side, causing a local warming and
drying of the air, and resulting in the zonda winds. This is a
foehn type of wind. The characteristics of the environment during
zonda wind events are described using the 40km regional Eta model
outputs. Isentropic surfaces show that the parcels of air
transposing the Andes can dive from about 600hPa to 850hPa to the
lee side, in a hydraulic jump resemblance. Strong decelerations to
the upper level jet is verified. A winter case is chosen to
illustrate the phenomenon in South America.",
