abstract = "This study aimed to evaluate the main contribution of data
extracted from high resolution images in the analysis of the
processes of urban sprawl and socioenvironmental vulnerability
situations. We used high spatial resolution images of IKONOS 2
satellite, a hyper-peripheral region of the city of Sao Paulo in
the period 2000 to 2006 and were taken as the basic unit IBGE
census tracts. That region includes the district of Tiradentes
City and surrounding areas. In that sense it was analyzed the ways
these two phenomena are linked, particularly as the process of
urban expansion and growth in outlying areas and peri-urban areas
generate new situations of vulnerability by promoting the presence
of the low-income population in areas without infrastructure and
urban services, and with exposure to risks and environmental
degradation. The significant increase this form of expansion
causes high levels of socioenvironmental vulnerability of this
population, which presents itself with the emergence and expansion
blends of irregular and shantytowns in areas at risk and in areas
protected by environmental legislation. With that aims to supply
subsidies for diagnosing study area that involved the study of
public policies formulated and implemented, makes it possible to
regulate and contain the processes of expansion and urban sprawl,
with the aim of preventing and mitigating circumstances of the
socioenvironmental vulnerability. How continuity to this study,
the procedures carried out has been achieved through automated
methods (object-oriented analysis) and with the use of images
HRC-CBERS-2B, due to benefits related to reducing costs, time and
subjectivity of the process of intra-urban classification.",
