             abstract = "The present work aims to analyze the classification resulting from 
                         object-based method, in the construction of a land use map of the 
                         Rio de Janeiro state, in the scale 1:100.000. The study required 7 
                         images of Landsat TM sensor, all obtained in August 2007. Two 
                         products were compared: an automatically generated map and an 
                         edited one. The automatic product was generated using a fuzzy 
                         model based on the spectral analysis of the earth features 
                         behavior, and the edited one was obtained in a continuous process, 
                         where some manual editions were made based on survey information. 
                         A top-down approach was used in the classification process. The 
                         classes at the same hierarchical level were analyzed and 
                         characterized by different object features (descriptors), part of 
                         which were personalized through a construction mode available by 
                         Definiens Developer software. The results of the whole 
                         classification, using the automatic process, became very good, 
                         mainly for forestry and pasture classes, which together are 
                         responsible for almost 80% of the study area. This work is the 
                         result of a big project which main objective is to define special 
                         ecological and economical zones for the Rio de Janeiro state. The 
                         project is sponsored by the Secretary of the Environment - 
                         SMA-RJ.",
